SHIPWRECKED Vacation Bible School will take place June 11-15 for children entering Kindergarten to 5th grade. Volunteers needed students entering 7th grade and above, as well as adults. Fr. Ricardo in the Classroom! Although the Fathers of Mercy kept a busy schedule the week of our recent parish Lenten mission, Fr. Ricardo Pineda was able to find time to spend a day in our junior high school. Our students were fortunate to have Fr. Ricardo join forces with Mr. Joe Fedinec to teach religion to our 6 th, 7 th, and 8 th graders. We thank Fr. Ricardo for coming to visit us and share his thoughts and prayers with us and hope he can return again! Spreading positivity at Saints Peter and Paul School! To help to emphasize a culture of kindness, the Student Council decided to plan and sponsor a Week of Kindness March 12-16. The week began by all students finding a shamrock on the locker with hand-written positive messages such as: You are special, God loves you, You are smart, and You are better than a snow day! Student Council provided other treats throughout the week like pretzels from Philly Pretzel Factory for all, Teacher Appreciation Day, kindness awards, and letter writing to residents of St. Patrick s Residence and Villa St. Benedict. Mark s Gospel Corner Palm Sunday - Triumphant Enter into Jerusalem Today s Gospel, Mark 14:1 15:47,recounts Jesus anointing at Bethany, His triumphant entry into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, and His Passion and death. While others are on a pilgrimage to celebrate the Passover, Jesus is on a pilgrimage to His death. Three times Mark emphasizes they are out to kill him. The leadership s opposition to Jesus has reached a fever s pitch. When Judas comes to betray Him, they are gleeful, as they had been looking for an opportunity to kill Him. Three times Judas involvement is emphasized. Mark shocks us: this is an inside job, one of the Twelve. Mark does not name the betrayer but simply announces that one chosen (i.e. to be an Apostle) will betray Him, reminding each of us that we have the capacity to do the same a shocking, painful realization. Compare the parallel structure of Mark 11:1-6, Jesus entry into Jerusalem, with Mark 14:13-16, the Last Supper. Mark uses a parallel structure to emphasize Jesus foreknowledge of what is to take place. Jesus comes to Jerusalem precisely to suffer and die for us. He is not caught unaware by trickery or deception He gives His life freely. Monday of Holy Week Anointing in Bethany Jesus is anointed at Bethany some want to kill Him, others lavishly shower Him with perfumed oil. Jesus is capable of arousing tremendous hatred and animosity in some, while in others, tremendous love and devotion. Simeon had prophesized to Mary, He will be a sign of contradiction, the rise and fall of many in Israel (Lk 2:34). This lavish outpouring at the home of Simon the leper is both a preparation for burial for Jesus and, like King David, the anointing of a king: When he was in Bethany reclining at table in the house of Simon the leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of perfumed oil, costly genuine spikenard. She broke the alabaster jar and poured it on his head (Mark 14.3) Jesus is the Anointed One of God, the Messiah, as announced at His baptism and at the Trans iguration. Now, this same Anointed One will suffer and die, yet still His disciples misunderstand what is taking place while others are indignant. Thursday of Holy Week The Last Supper Mark frames the Last Supper meal with betrayal (betrayal meal betrayal) to shed light on betrayal and what takes place within the meal. We have seen this sandwiching before: the cleansing of the temple is placed after the cursing of the ig tree, which bore no fruit, and just before the scene where we see that the ig tree has withered. Mark frames the narrative to emphasize that just as the ig tree failed to produce fruit and withered, the temple has failed to produce fruit and will be destroyed. The Last Supper takes place just after Judas plots with the leaders to betray Jesus and shortly before Judas will betray Jesus with a kiss. This structure highlights that in the midst of betrayal, Jesus gives us the Eucharist. How does one partake of the meal, a sign of fellowship and intimacy with Christ, and then betray Him? It s shocking, but don t we do the same? Mark purposefully does not identify Jesus betrayer, prompting each disciple to ask, Is it I? In doing so Mark reminds us that we are all capable of betraying Our Lord we have all betrayed Him. Still, in the midst of betrayal, Jesus gives Himself to His disciples in the Eucharist. Only God can love this much; only God can totally give of Himself while He is being betrayed. Soon after the meal, this community of believers will scatter they will all abandon Him. The Eucharist is a pledge that God will seek out and restore this shattered community, as we are restored, too, in sacramental Confession. They leave the meal, singing the Psalm 136 (the Great Hallel) recounting with joy God s great act of deliverance: Give thanks to the Lord for He is good. We recognize now, in an even more wonderful way that the words of this psalm refer to the greater deliverance accomplished by Jesus, but as it happened the disciples were still blind to what was taking place. Jesus tells them when He is raised up that He will go before them to Galilee, the place where healings were most abundantly performed during His public ministry, but when Jesus is raised up, miracles within souls will abound! Boastfully, Peter proclaims, Even if I have to die, I will not betray you. Consider how gently and mercifully Jesus responds. Peter falls the furthest three times he denies Jesus. The early Church, only knowing the post resurrection Peter, understood that the same Peter who betrayed Him became the most important apostle, the Vicar of Christ on earth, and this gives us hope. Peter s humanness attracts us. God forgave him and used him to lead the Church, the Kingdom of God on earth. Discipleship is not destroyed by the frailty of the disciple. Discipleship is not built on our faithfulness, but on Jesus promise, I go before you to Galilee. Mother Teresa understood how we are transformed into His image: Love Him trustfully without looking back, without fear. Give yourself fully to Jesus. Mark s Gospel Corner (con t) The Garden of Gethsemane In Gethsemane, Jesus faced His death with trepidation and was greatly distressed: My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. The Greek verb conveys that Jesus suffered the anguish and disorientation that follows a great trauma. It can be compared to a parent who has suddenly lost their child. Stay with me, He implores Peter, James, and John. And going a little further, Jesus fell the verb tense in Greek implies that Jesus was losing control, falling to pieces, collapsing to the ground and crying out, Abba, Father. Never before in history had God been referred to as Daddy, a term so remarkable that Mark quotes Jesus verbatim. Jesus prays, Let this cup pass, but not my will, but Yours. Following the Father s will exempli ies Jesus whole life and death. Three times Jesus inds the disciples sleeping; three times Mark contrasts Jesus idelity to the disciples failure. Finally, the hour has arrived when Jesus confronts evil face to face. Jesus has collected Himself, saying to His disciples, Rise, let us go forth, my betrayer is at hand. As Jesus struggles with carrying out the Father s will for Him, we appreciate more fully that He became like us in all things but sin. Judas, one of the Twelve, approaches Jesus and kissing Him identi ies Him to the guards. Kataphileo, the Greek for kiss, is used by Mark to highlight that this normal sign of intimacy was used to betray Him. Mark recounts it because it was so appalling. Judas betrayed Him with a KISS incredulous. As Jesus is led away, where were His disciples? They all left him and led. Good Friday The Trial Mark conveys that the trial is nothing but a perversion of justice. This is not an impartial procedure. With no facts to condemn Jesus, in frustration, the highest of icial asks Him, Are you the Messiah, the Christ? This is the question each of us must ask? Jesus answers them, I AM, using the same name God the Father used when He revealed Himself to Moses in the burning bush. Weak, bruised, abandoned, we can now understand what God has done for us and what Jesus response means. Jesus and the Father are one and the person standing before them on trial is both God and man. In God s love for us, the Anointed One is the Suffering Servant foretold by Isaiah 53. In contrast to the High Priest and Sanhedrin, Pilate later inds no wrong in Jesus He dies an innocent man. As Jesus is condemned to die, we have a beautiful example of vicarious suffering. Jesus sufferings set Barabbas free. The innocent one dies so a murderer can live. The Cruci ixion Mark records Jesus cruci ixion simply and with little detail since no details were necessary. The ancients were all too familiar with the horrors of cruci ixion. Cicero said it was the most cruel and frightful punishment. Seneca asks, Can anyone be found who would prefer wasting away in pain, limb by limb, letting out his life drop by drop rather than expiring once and for all? Precisely because it was so extreme, it did not need to be described. In the cruci ixion, Jesus identi ies Himself with the extremity of human wretchedness, suffering, and lowliness. Finally, in this moment, at the climax of the Gospel, the Roman centurion, the least likely person, is the irst one in Mark s Gospel to fully recognize who Jesus really is when he proclaims, Truly, this man was the Son of God. The demons recognized Him as early as Mark, Chapter 1, while the disciples failed to see and understand Jesus throughout Mark s Gospel. Now, when the centurion who stood facing him saw how he breathed his last, his eyes were opened and he recognized who Jesus was and proclaimed Him to the world. Mark wanted the early Church, he wants us, to understand that we can only recognize who Jesus is on the Cross as this is why He came into the world. We cannot divorce Easter from the Cruci ixion, for where I am, there will my disciple be. So when raising a family entails hardship; when addictions weigh you down; when you seem to confess the same sins again and again; when you are hurting because you see your children struggling or when you are suffering loneliness, failure, or depression, look to Christ on the cruci ix. He is there with you in your agony. In the wisdom of God, our cross, is necessary for salvation. He will help you carry it and raise you up, where, like the good thief, you will reign with Him in paradise.
