The First Thanksgiving at Plymouth, by Jennie Augusta Brownscombe (1914), Pilgrim Hall Museum, Plymouth, MA. Blessings As we gather with family and friends for Thanksgiving, we look back at the many blessings we have all received this past year, and we pray that many more of them will come our way in the coming year. I am sure you all have your lists of Thank Yous to share, and here is one you can probably all relate to: I am thankful:... for the teenager who is not doing dishes but is watching TV because that means he is at home and not on the streets.... for the taxes that I pay because it means that I am employed.... for the mess to clean after a party because it means that I have been surrounded by friends.... for the clothes that fit a little too snug because it means that I have enough to eat.... for my shadow that watches me work because it means that I am out in the sunshine.... for a lawn that needs mowing, windows that need cleaning, and gutters that need fixing because it means that I have a home.... for all the complaining I hear about the Government because it means that we have freedom of speech.... for the parking spot I find at the far end of the parking lot because it means I am capable of walking and that I have been blessed with transportation.... for my huge heating bill because it means that I am warm.... for the lady behind me in church who sings off key because it means that I can hear.... for the pile of laundry and ironing because it means that I have clothes to wear.... for the snow I have to shovel and the ice I have to chip off because it means that at least we have moisture, and the grass will grow in the spring.... for weariness and aching muscles at the end of the day because it means that I have been capable of working hard.... for the alarm that goes off in the early morning hours because it means that I am alive. A Blessed Thanksgiving to all parishioners, Father Julian

4 Fr. Joseph s Corner... ST. FRANCIS PARISH LIFE [Fr. Joseph will either write a brief article on various topics, or he will answer any questions our parishioners may have. Just send an e-mail to: frjoseph@stfrancisbend.org.] The Origin of the Eucharistic Celebration: The Jews thanked God for two blessings; namely, the gift of time and the gift of riches. They thanked God for His gift of time by observing the last day of the week as Sabbath a day of rest, worship, and good works. They thanked God for the gift of riches by offering tithes to the Temple. The early Christians did the same, observing Sunday for their day of rest and thanksgiving, by participating in the Lord s Supper, and returning thanks for all God had given them by sharing what they had with the less fortunate in their Faith community. The Eucharistic Celebration has its roots in the ancient Jewish Passover Meal. Passover was celebrated both as a memorial feast and a thanksgiving meal commemorating the liberation of the Chosen People from their slavery in Egypt. It was at such a Passover (the Last Supper, as we call it), that Jesus instituted the Eucharist. The three synoptic Gospels and St. Paul have handed on to us the account of the institution of the Eucharist at this Last Supper. By celebrating this meal with His apostles, Jesus gave the Jewish Passover its definitive meaning: His passage to the Father by death and Resurrection. Jesus followed the ancient tradition of blessing the bread and wine. Then He gave a whole new meaning to the Passover feast when He took bread, blessed it, and gave it to the disciples and said, Take, eat; this is My Body (Matthew 26:26). After this, He took a cup of wine, gave thanks, and gave it to his disciples, saying, This cup which is poured out for you is the New Covenant of My Blood (Luke The Eucharist: Part 1 22:20). Thus, the Last Supper was both a farewell meal and a sacrifice. Jesus, Himself, was the Sacrifice as well as the Priest because He offered His Body and Blood to God in sacrifice for all people. Jesus s Command and Its Practice in the Church: The command of Jesus ( Do this in memory of Me ), obliges us to repeat his actions and words until he comes. It also directs His apostles and their successors to carry out a liturgical celebration of His life, death, Resurrection, and intercession [CCC #165]. From the beginning, the Church has been faithful to the Lord s command. It was on the first day of the week, or Sunday, the day of Jesus s Resurrection, that the Christians met to break bread. Of the early Church in Jerusalem, it is written in the Acts: They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and prayers... Day by day, attending the Temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they partook of food with glad and generous hearts. As early as the 2nd Century, we have the witness of St. Justin, martyr, regarding the basic order of the Eucharistic Celebration. Around 155 AD, St. Justin wrote to the pagan emperor, Antonius Pius, explaining to him the meaning of the Christian Eucharistic Celebration. Down through the centuries, the Church has been careful to preserve the basic structure of the Mass in all liturgical families both in the East and in the West. (To be con nued next week.) Prayerful Wishes, Fr. Joseph Eucharistic Adoration Adorers are needed for the following Holy Hours: Tuesdays: 3 4 p.m. & 4 5 p.m. Wednesdays: 8 9 p.m. Thursdays: 8 9 a.m. Fridays: 9 10 a.m., 10 11 a.m., & 11 a.m. 12 p.m. Please contact Lisa Burley at (541) 633-7142 or email to: lisaburley99@gmail.com. Turn off your computers and set down your cell phones. Ignore your work, your family, and your friends for just one hour a week. Come to the Historic Church and spend an hour with our best friend to us all. Let God know you love Him for all the blessings He has bestowed upon you and your family. Talk to Him, pray to Him, or just sit there and unwind with Him. He always has our best interests at heart. We just need to stop and listen sometimes, and where better to do that than in a quiet church? I truly think you will come to appreciate and enjoy this hour. All who already attend the Eucharistic Adoration, please continue on and pray that others will come to thank and glorify our Lord! Bob Gregory, St. Francis Parish, Bend Our new parish Website is being launched on Thanksgiving Day, November 26th!

ST. FRANCIS PARISH LIFE 5 Christmas Faire Thank you to all who made this year s Christmas Faire and After Fair Sale held last Saturday and Sunday, November 14/15, a success... workers, those who donated items, and all those who participated in any way. Results will come later! Sherry Rice Fontanini Statues on Display The Fontanini statues for our Nativity will be on display for everyone to see THIS SUNDAY, November 22nd, in the Community Center. There are still two characters to arrive, but the majority of them are here. They will start being displayed in the stable in front of the altar on the First Sunday of Advent, November 29th. Then a few characters at a time will be added all during Advent. Father Julian Thanksgiving Day Offerings The bilingual Mass, with music, will be on Thanksgiving Day, November 26th, at 10 a.m. The collections will go to the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Bend. Due to your generosity, St. Vincent's is able to assist 18,000 men, women, and children in need each year with food, affordable housing, utility bills, help with prescription payments, warm clothes, coats, tents, and sleeping bags for Bend s homeless. Thank you to all of the parishioners at St. Francis who make this mission possible! Please be sure to write St. Vincent s on your check, and use the SVdP designated envelope. Or you can put cash or a check made out to St. Vincent s in the collection basket if you don t have an envelope. And if you won t be attending Mass on Thanksgiving Thursday, you can still drop your envelope into any Sunday collection basket. Jeff Rickman, Executive Director, SVdP A Special KOC Rosary Starting on Sunday, November 29th, at 7 a.m., the Rosary will be said before the 7:30 a.m. Mass. This is a project through the Knights of Columbus that will occur only on the fifth Sunday of the month. The intention will be for all the members of our parish from the Knights of Columbus. God bless, Alan Walsh Reconciliation Service The Advent Reconciliation Service will be on Wednesday, December 2nd, from 6:30 p.m., onward. Numerous priests will be available to hear confessions in both English and Spanish. Community Center Kitchen Many groups in our parish use the Community Center s kitchen, and we need to keep it in good condition and up to standards with the Health Department. Therefore, Patty Marx will hold two sessions to explain the proper way to clean the kitchen after each use. These two sessions are for all those who have used the kitchen in the past, those who may use it in the future, and those who use it on a regular basis. Patty will be available on Monday, December 7th, from 5 to 7 p.m., and again on Thursday, December 10th, from 1 to 3 p.m. Every group should have one or more representatives attend one of these sessions to learn the proper cleaning process. If anyone does not attend a session for his or her respective ministry, a fee of $20 will be charged every time the kitchen is used. No exceptions! This is fair for everyone because if you want to use our facilities, you have to respect them and keep everything the way you found it clean and tidy. Father Julian Christmas Pot Luck The Young@Heart Seniors are preparing to have a fun Christmas Pot Luck at the home of Margaret and Ernie Barnes on December 11th starting at 11:30 a.m. Please bring a side dish or dessert and a $10 gift for a lively exchange. Parish Calendars I want to personally thank Mr. Jerome Daniel, who once again sponsored our annual parish calendars. They will be available by the middle of December. The Daniel Family runs three Funeral Homes in town, specifically Niswonger- Reynolds, Deschutes Memorial, and Autumn Funerals. This year s calendars feature pictures and quotes from Pope Francis. Father Julian Annual Blood Drive Mark your calendars for December 31st! The Annual St. Francis New Year s Eve Blood Drive is calling you to save a life more information to come soon on how to sign up!

6 ST. FRANCIS PARISH LIFE Let Us Remember... Elementary Faith Formation Below are the names of the deceased during the past year: Agnes Wick Alberto Gonzalez Corinne Norburg Frank Spernak Ronald William Smith John Armour Charles Bigelow William Hollinger Barbara Bergseng Jerry Crowley Kathleen Combs Brian Schaub His Excellency Thomas Joseph Connolly Rev. Thomas Scanlan Grace Alwinger Marta Rae Harris Suzanne Stevens Theodore Krahmer Noreen Hertweck Fred Boyle Monique Nebolon Alfred Pereira Ingrid Perez Vilchis Parishioners of St. Francis! The Lord has blessed this parish through all of you and your generosity. As a result of your ongoing contributions, St. Francis has become much more financially stable and in turn has allowed our great priests to focus on the spiritual health of this Church. I want to share some practical things on alms-giving for those who are trying to live faithful stewardship of their finances. Five things strike me as important: The tithe is defined as a gift of 10 percent of what we have or earn to give to honor God. Counted in this are all of our gifts to the poor and to charity, as well as our donations to the Church, which doesn't include Catholic School tuition. It should be planned. We don t tip God with whatever we have in our pocket. We put some thought into it that reflects our faith. Make it a priority. We make our giving a priority as we budget our other expenses. Give a percentage. We should be aware of what percentage of our income is being given to the poor and the Church. Whether it is 1 percent or 10 percent, we should know accurately how much we are giving. Make progress with your tithe. As we grow in faith, it should be reflected in our growth in simplicity and dependence upon God. Remember God doesn't just want us to tithe for the sake of tithing or because we hope to receive his generous response. He wants us to recognize Him as the Lord of everything and our faithful provider. Thank you again for your generosity. Justin Lappe, Parish Finance Council Member New to Our Parish?
