September 2017 Newsletter For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance. Ecclesiastes 3:1-4 It is hard to believe that as we look at the calendar, summer is slipping away and autumn is quickly coming. It seemed as though just yesterday we were seeing the first warm days of June and now the evenings have a cool edge to them that speaks of football and changing leaves. Soon summer cottages will be mothballed for another winter, the summer grill outs will end, school will get into full swing and we will be back to the usual day in and day out routine. With the change in seasons it may be that we will see an upswing in the busy-ness of our schedules. Clubs that took a break during the summer will begin their meetings again; kids and grandkids sports will roar back to life; and those summer vacations will become only memories. Here at church, we will also see some changes with the coming of September. The Women s Circles will have more going on; the committees that took a little down time during summer will get back into regular meetings; I will pull out my robe and stole instead of the more relaxed shirt and slacks. And the rhythm of the week will change. With the start of the new academic semester, my schedule will move to being around the church office on Mondays and Fridays. Lisa will be in on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Bible study will move to Monday mornings at 9:30. With all of this activity going on around us, it is important to remember why we are doing it and to keep a little of the lightness that seems to be part of summer with us. The famous verses of Ecclesiastes 3 does indeed remind us that there is a season for every purpose under heaven. But further on in the chapter, the writer says, What gain have the workers from their toil? I have seen the business that God has given to everyone to be busy with... I know that there is nothing better for them than to be happy and enjoy themselves as long as they live; moreover, it is God's gift that all should eat and drink and take pleasure in all their work. We are created to delight in life and remember even in the busy-ness to know that God is there, giving us tasks to do which help to build the kingdom of heaven that is being revealed even now. So as we move into this new season, make sure that you take time to smell the roses, or rather the drying leaves, that God has given us to delight in even as the pace and schedule change.
Women s Association A gathering of about 30 people appreciated Judy Schenlinger s presentation on Judaism on August 8. Circles will resume their monthly meetings in September with Naomi Circle meeting at Ginny Maurer s on Monday, September 11, at 10:00 a.m. for Bible Study, refreshment and fellowship. The Bible Study is based on the book of Hebrews. Cost: $10.00, payable to LHPC; on memo line - Women s Association. Martha Circle will meet at Jan Davis home on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 12:30 for refreshments, fellowship & bible study. They will discuss the intro and first lesson of Who is Jesus? MORE ADULT EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES?? The Christian Education Committee is discussing several options for Adult Education, short term studies or regular groups. If you are interested, or have ideas, please see Marcia Sinner or any other CE committee member (Karen Stephan, Bruce Parker, Joe Fresch, and John Riedmaier) MONDAY BIBLE STUDY GROUP Bible Study is switching to Mondays starting September 11 for the fall. We will meet Monday mornings at 9:30 AM in the Brookfield Room of Living Hope Presbyterian Church. (we are skipping the first week of September for Labor Day). You are invited to join us!! The passages we study are the scripture passages for each upcoming Sunday. Even if you cannot attend our study group, you are invited to read through the passages prior to worship in your preparing for worship. Larry Under the Bridge Thank you to all those that helped bake, make and take the lunches in August. Please continue to give canned and boxed goods for the two food pantries we support. Donations are taken year round. Sample shopping lists are by the collections box in the gathering area. Monetary contributions are always welcome to pay for meal making supplies. Zachary West to produce heavy rains, with serious flooding into the middle of the week. 3 Hurricane Harvey Disaster Harvey made landfall late Friday, August 25 and early Saturday, August 26 as a category 4 hurricane, and though downgraded now to tropical storm status, remains dangerous as it continues to churn inland into Texas. Damage in and near Rockport and Port Lavaca, where the storm made landfall, was catastrophic. There are several reported deaths and massive damage reported, and the flood event is continuing as the storm is dumping heavy rains in South Texas. The storm is forecast to continue The needs for the response are great. God s people are once again called on to stand in the GAP - Give. Act. Pray. GIVE: Living Hope will be collecting donations for Hurricane Harvey for several Sundays please mark your donation Hurricane Harvey. ACT: look on the PCUSA website for ways to help: www.pda.pcusa.org/page/kits PRAY: God, our Shelter, be a strong presence in the lives of neighbors who, having survived the winds and rains of Harvey, now face grief, uncertainty and weary days. May our generosity in prayer and in tangible signs of support overflow more than floodwaters, to sustain your work of healing and rebuilding and to bring comfort and strength to those who suffer, Amen.

Growing in Grace and Gratitude will be our base curriculum for this year with supplemental and mission based activities. Session notes from the regular session meeting held August 20, 2017. The new stained-glass windows in the sanctuary are up and look beautiful. A long discussion was held as to the duties of the Welcome Host an elder or deacon assigned each Sunday to stand in the Gathering Space and welcome all but additionally is tasked with opening up and locking up the church. Clearer instructions will be finalized and sent each week to the assigned person. A thank you note from Dee and Kelly Talley was received and shared. The note will be placed on the church bulletin board. Nominating will begin their work soon. Please prayerfully consider serving your church if called, or speak with Joe Fresch or Tom Tennyson, Nominating co-chairs. The office copy machine has been having many problems. We have been working on keeping it running but problems persist. As an emergency back-up Curtis has procured a printer to be used. Sunday School will start up again on September 10, Coming Together Sunday. The official record of each session meeting is posted once it s approved at the next meeting.
