2 A ONE-DAY RETREAT WITH JAMES FINLEY, PHD Becoming a Presence of Peace in the World The Arts of Acceptance, Listening and Compassion SATURDAY, MARCH 17, 9AM 4PM If you long to be someone in whose presence others are better able to find peace amid difficulties, then cultivating the little arts of acceptance, listening and compassion takes on great importance. And perhaps there s no better teacher of these arts than Dr. James Finley, who embodies peaceful presence and generosity of spirit and intellect. A former monk, whose spiritual director was Thomas Merton, Finley is an author, clinical psychologist and core faculty member of the Center for Action and Contemplation s Living School. He visited Saint Barnabas in 2015, and we are delighted to welcome him back. This one-day retreat will include periods of conference, prayer and contemplation, with time for questions and answers, breaks, and lunch (provided). CDs and DVDs will be available for purchase. Register online at saintbarnabas.org/finley2018. The retreat fee is $60 before January 2 ($70 after), and some partial scholarships are available. For more information, contact Patrick Waugh at patwaugh@cox.net. QUIET DAY Practice, Practice, Practice Part V SATURDAY, JANUARY 13, 9:30AM - 1PM SANCTUARY Today s quiet day continues our focus on an indepth look at the practices of the contemplative life. What are they and when, where, how, and why do we practice them, and why do these practices matter and matter so much? This new quiet day series intends to be helpful to the beginner and the experienced. Reflections by Jim Clark. Please bring your Bible. 9:30 in the sanctuary. All are welcome. NEW WORSHIP BANNERS Thank you to our Memorial Acceptance and Fine Arts committee who undertook the replacement of our processional banners (which had been falling apart after 50 years of use!) about two years ago. From finding an artist to approving designs to designating memorial funding, MAFA has blessed our community with a new Eucharistic banner and a new Children s Banner. A special thanks to Nancy & Tom Harvey for their special gifts given to the Glory of God in thanksgiving for Lily Lillian Grace Sands and all children.
3 MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID SATURDAYS, JANUARY 27 and FEBRUARY 3, 9AM - 1 PM One in five individuals will experience mental illness in their life. Just as we learn to help others with physical illness using first aid, we should learn first aid for those suffering with mental illness too. The Mental Health Task Force will be offering this training, which will help persons identify, understand and respond to someone who may be experiencing a mental health or substance challenge. Topics covered will include anxiety, depression, Alzheimers, dementia, psychosis and addiction. Fee is $20 for the textbook and snacks will be provided. To register, please contact Barb at or contact the church office. WANT A NEW WAY TO CONNECT? The 10:21. Experience the power of meditation in our contemplative worship service Sunday mornings at 10:21am in the Music Center. Boundless Presence CONVERSATIONS IN EPIPHANY SUNDAYS, JANUARY 7, 14 AND 21, 9AM HUTTON HALL Start the New Year with Joy. The Rev.
