St. Vincent's is asking you to share your loving care by helping us provide Christmas food baskets for the less fortunate families of our community. Help can be given as follows: 1. Cash donation or checks payable to: St. Vincent de Paul Food Account. Send to St. Vincent De Paul Society, 928 7th Street SE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52401. 2. SACRED RELICS OF THE SAINTS: TREASURES OF THE CHURCH: A teaching and exposition of Sacred Relics is coming to St. Mary Church in Solon on Thursday December 14 at 7:00 pm. Father Carlos Martins of the Companions of the Cross will be here with his very special ministry to teach about these holy objects. He will bring with him over 150 relics, some as old as 2000 years. Among the treasures will be relics of St. Maria Goretti, St. Therese of Lisieux (the Little Flower"), St. Francis of Assisi, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. Faustina Kowalska. In addition, there will also be present a portion of the veil of Our Lady, as well as one of the largest remaining pieces of the True Cross in the world. Those in attendance will be able to examine and venerate each relic. In the Church s history many miracles and healings have been worked in the presence of relics, and many have been healed through this ministry. Please do not miss this opportunity. You are encouraged to bring your articles of devotion (such as rosaries, holy cards, etc.) and pictures of ill friends/family members which you will be able to touch to the reliquaries as a means of intercession. FISH FRY MEAL PUNCH CARDS are are back this year. Punch Cards will be sold prior to the start of the first Fish Fry (February 16, 2018). You buy the card for the price of 6 meals and get the 7th meal for free. This card is valid for dine in or drive thru. An adult meal punch card is $60. A senior meal punch card is $54. And a child meal punch card is $36. Cards will be sold in the Parish Office during regular business hours. WHAT A GREAT IDEA FOR CHRISTMAS! CHRISTMAS IS COMING: With the upcoming Holiday Season, beginning, November 18th the ARK CATHOLIC BOOKS AND GIFTS STORE will be using the sitting room in the Rectory for additional merchandise. For parents with children, please use the room off of the altar as a cry room (if you need one) until after the holidays. Thank you! 4
A Letter from Kim Graven Administrator of Holy Family Schools Dear Parishioners, I wanted to give you an update from last night s school board meeting. The first action item of significance is that the school board voted to officially accept the Long Range Plan recommendations made by our steering committee at the October board meeting with no changes. We offer deep gratitude to our 9 members that served on the Long Range Planning Committee as well as our facilitator for their time, efforts, and quality work. The agenda also included an action item about the possibility of moving to a one campus model and closing the St. Ludmila Center. The motion was made to close the St. Ludmila center at the conclusion of this school year and the motion passed. Our current school setup is Preschool-2nd grade (170 students) at St. Jude, 3rd-4th grade (70 student) at St. Ludmila, and 5th-8th grade (176 students) at LaSalle. Next school year we will have Preschool through 4th grade at our St. Jude Center and 5th-8th grades will remain at LaSalle. Please know this decision from the school board was not made in haste and was a very difficult decision for our school board members. Many factors have been looked at for several years and this decision came as a result of weighing all of the information, including the feedback given during the Long Range Planning process and making the best decision for the future of Holy Family Schools. Although there is great sadness in closing a center, we can look forward to the benefits that campus unification brings to our system, including a more efficient use of staff and resources, unity among stakeholders and procedures, and financial stability. Utilizing a one-campus model allows Holy Family Schools to maintain a balanced budget with reasonable tuition increases and continued parish support. In the spirit of transparency, closing the St. Ludmila Center does help us financially, however we still have a lot of work to do over the next three to five years to keep the budget balanced. We have three large classes moving out and are bringing in smaller classes, which continues to cause significant financial strain on the school system. We have looked extensively at our projected financials for the next few years. We will need to get creative in the coming years to find additional revenue models and money savings beyond the closing of the St. Ludmila Center to allow us to maintain a balanced budget. I am confident that with prayer, focus on our mission, collaboration, and hard work we will be able to fulfill the goals of our long range plan and continue to build on all of the wonderful qualities that we know and love about Holy Family School System for years to come. With the closing of the St. Ludmila Center, we will honor the many years of wonderful traditions and learning that have taken place, as well as the amazing people who have called St. Ludmila home over the years. Look for communication in the future regarding these celebrations and how you can be involved. Please don t hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you might have. My door is always open to you. Thank you for your continued support of Holy Family Schools. Blessings, Kimberly Graven OUR GIFT TO YOU: 2018 CALENDARS: The calendars are here.
