A NOTE FROM FATHER Dear Parishioners, Starting this weekend, we are hoping to implement a change. We are implementing having families be greeters in the Narthex especially on Sundays. Their duties will be to welcome individuals and families coming in a warm and Christ-like manner, helping the little children find the children s bulletins and crayons, and answering any questions. These will be in addition to the ushers, who will continue to aid people in the sanctuary, find seats as needed, help with the collection(s), and help the sacristans straighten up after the Masses. My hope is that we can get to be a more welcoming community. In reading about the parishes that have implemented something similar, I was captured by a thought. Some recommended that the greeters be aware that they are welcoming the stranger' and friend, and in doing so, they welcomed Christ. Another pastor reminded the greeters that they might be the first sign of Christ (and His hospitality) that the person coming into the church will experience. My hope is that all coming in will be personally greeted by at least 2 people, whether it is a simple smile, a handshake or fist-bump, or a hug for those comfortable. If you would like to volunteer your family to help greet people, let Sarah or me know. One thing that I will be doing is allowing the greeting family to reserve a pew (whichever pew they would like) so that after they are done greeting people (and during the announcements), they may go to the pew they desire. I am rather excited about this, and look forward to seeing its fruits. Just a reminder that anyone can do this. Believe it or not (by now, though, it should not shock anyone), I am introverted, and yet I love to greet you as you come in. I know it is my duty to know you. Well, as Catholics and fellow parishioners, it is all of our duties to welcome each other to the celebration of our faith. ~ In Christ, Fr. Todd JOHN IRELAND NEWS www.churchofstpeter.org/ji We are a Catholic community welcoming students of all faiths, devoted to Gospel Values, Academic Excellence, and Christian Service. 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time 3
