THE HOLY FATHER S PRAYER INTENTIONS From the Holy See Each month His Holiness asks for general and missionary prayer intentions. For August 2015, the Holy Father s prayer intentions are: Universal: Volunteering That volunteers may give themselves generously to the service of the needy. Missionary: Neighbors That setting aside our very selves we may learn to be neighbours to those who find themselves on the margins of human life and society. POPE FRANCIS TO CANONIZE BL. JUNIPERO SERRA AT THE NATIONAL SHRINE (from the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception) It is with great joy that we await the Holy Father s visit to the United States of America and to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. On September 23, 2015, during his Apostolic Visit to the United States, Pope Francis will be visiting this magnificent Marian Shrine. Here, on the National Shrine s East Portico, the Holy Father will celebrate the Mass of Canonization of Blessed Junípero Serra, the Franciscan priest who founded missions throughout California. Blessed Junípero Serra will be the first person to be canonized on American soil. In a recent address at the Pontifical North American College in Rome, Pope Francis reflected upon the life of Father Junípero Serra, urging the faithful of the United States to imitate Blessed Junípero in his zeal, his Marian devotion, and his witness of holiness. The Holy Father challenges us to emulate Father Serra by responding with the same generosity and courage to the call of God, who invites us to worship him, to follow him, to rediscover him in the face of the poor, to proclaim him to those who have not known Christ and, therefore, have not experienced the embrace of his mercy. Friar Junípero s witness calls upon us to get involved, personally, in the mission to the whole continent, which finds its roots in the joy of the Gospel.
