3 06 FEB (Monday): SAINTS PAUL MIKI and COMPANIONS, Martyrs (d. 1597) Paul, the son of a Japanese military leader, joined the Jesuits in 1580, and became known for his eloquent preaching. He was crucified with 25 other Japanese Catholics (the Martyrs of Nagasaki), mostly laymen, during the persecution of Christians under the Taiko, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, ruler of Japan in the name of the emperor. Paul delivered his final sermon from the cross. 11 FEB (Saturday): OUR LADY OF LOURDES (1858) Our Lady appeared to Bernadette 18 times at the Grotto de Massabielle. Over 5 million visitors journey to Lourdes every year. It has been estimated that in the first 50 years of pilgrimages to Lourdes, over 4000 cures were attributed and recorded. This number is considered to be significantly lower than the actual number of cures. Two basilicas, the Basilique du Rosaire and the Upper Basilica, were built in the late 1800 s on either side of the grotto. Saints and Observances SOLEMNITY, FEAST, MEMORIAL OPTIONAL MEMORIAL OTHER 10 FEB (Friday): SAINT SCHOLASTICA, Virgin ( ) Twin sister of St. Benedict. After Benedict founded the monastery of Monte Cassino, Scholastica founded a community of nuns nearby, leading an exemplary life. She has the appearance of a young girl of sixteen or seventeen. She is dressed in a white robe, girdled at the waist with a blue ribbon which flows down all around it. A yoke closes it in graceful pleats at the base of the neck. The sleeves are long and tight-fitting. She wears upon her head a veil which is also white. This veil gives just a glimpse of her hair and then falls down at the back below her waist. Her feet are bare but covered by the last folds of her robe, except at the point where a yellow rose shines upon each of them. She holds on her right arm a rosary of white beads with a chain of gold, shining like the two roses on her feet. -- Bernadette s description of Our Lady of Lourdes after the first apparition. We will have time for getting to know each other, renewing old friendships and making new ones. The Sisters have a tradition of relying on the charity of those in the community to make their work possible. Please be generous so their work with the elderly may continue. In The Community It is with sincere gratitude that the Faculty and Staff at Nativity School thank everyone who so generously donated to the Annual School Appeal in 2016! Sign up for an hour with the Lord, truly present in the Most Blessed Sacrament, and spend some time asking the Lord of the Harvest to send more laborers. Using this booklet while saying the Rosary will not only be helpful to you, but also for the world. They are building their volunteer base in the Menlo Park/Palo Alto area and invite you to join them. The volunteers pick up excess perishable and prepared food from participating donors (restaurants, caterers, corporate cafeterias, etc.) and then deliver the food directly to the recipients (shelters, day centers for the elderly, Boys and Girls Clubs, etc.). They are in urgent need of drivers in this area. Surplus food is available, but they have too few drivers to transport the food to local non-profits which feed the hungry. 6 The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes Young Believers Spending time with our Lord in a Holy Hour has benefits of which most of us are not aware: Our Lord revealed to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque DID YOU KNOW? how to make a Holy Hour. In 1674, Our Lord appeared to her and complained of the indifference with which mankind treated His Love for them and asked her to make atonement for this ingratitude. He said: I will make you a partaker of that sorrow unto death which it was My will to suffer in the Garden of Olives. To join with Me in the humble prayer which I then offered to My Divine Father in agony, you shall rise before midnight, and remain with Me upon your knees prostrate for one hour, with your face to the ground, to appease the anger of My Eternal Father and ask of Him pardon for sinners. In an Apostolic Letter on 30 MAR 1886, Pope Leo XIII allowed the faithful to make their Holy Hour on any hour and day of the week. Every Holy Hour we make so pleases the Heart of Jesus that it is recorded in Heaven and retold for all eternity! -- Saint Teresa of Calcutta Our Lord revealed to Blessed Dina Belanger that a Holy Hour of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament is so important that a multitude of souls go to heaven that had been destined for hell. You can come to Me (in Eucharistic Adoration) at any moment, at any time; I want to speak to you and I desire to grant you grace. -- Our Lord to Saint Faustina A PRAYER TREAT Did you know that pretzels became a treat more than 1400 years ago? Around 610 A.D. a monk was baking bread in a monastery in Europe. While baking, he was thinking about prayer. At that time, people held their arms over their hearts while praying. The monk decided that he would twist leftover dough into a shape of someone praying. When the new treat was finished baking, the monk showed the others in the monastery. They decided to give the twisted treats to children as rewards for learning their prayers. The monks called the treats pretiola, a Latin word meaning little reward. SAFETY REGARDING SCHOOL BUSES There is a bus from Menlo School that stops near the entrance driveway of Nativity every school day morning at about 07:30 AM. Usually they are not blocking the entrance driveway. For the safety of the students, state law requires that all other vehicles stop on both sides of the road if the red lights on the bus are flashing. If you are turning left into the Nativity driveway while the bus is near please wait until the bus has left the area. PRAYER OF ST. GERTRUDE THE GREAT Our Lord revealed to St. Gertrude that the following prayer would release 1000 souls from Purgatory each time it was said. Eternal Father, I offer You the Most Precious Blood of Your Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the Universal Church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.
