3 Ministry and Group News FAITH FORMATION CLASSES BEGIN Our Faith Formation Classes will begin on Tuesday, 30 September This semester, the classes will be on Apologetics and Evangelization. We will explore the common difficulties people have with the Catholic faith, how to answer in those situations, and how to guide others to the faith. We will cover various theological difficulties plus most common challenges of the new atheism and sexual immorality. In all these matters, we will begin with the necessity of ourselves living lives in conformity with the Gospels and approaching others, many of them hurting, with the knowledge that they are seeking the same things we are (eternal happiness, peaceful living, security, loving relationships with others, as well as answers to the questions: who am I, where did I come from, where am I going when I die, etc.). Christ and His Catholic church presents the fullest answers to these questions and the most satisfying path. Please join us in this class of study, and action. The classes are approximately 90 minutes long. They are presented at 09:30 AM and then repeated at 07:00 PM. We will have a Mass at 07:30 PM, followed by a talk on the message of Fatima, rosary candlelight procession around the church grounds, and healing Benediction. Please join us and bring your family. We will meet Mondays, 07:30-09:00 PM in the O Hare Center, beginning 15 September This faith formation series is for adults who have never been baptized, or were baptized in another faith, and are now considering becoming Catholic. We also welcome Catholics who may not have received all the sacraments of initiation, those who ve been away from the faith and who wish to return, and those who just want to brush up on their faith. The classes are led by Deacon Tom Kelly and parishioner Charlotte Pace, with frequent assistance from St. Patrick seminarians and parish priests, in preparation for the reception of the Sacraments of Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation at the Easter Vigil, Saturday evening, 04 April We will accept new participants throughout September and October. INFANT JESUS OF PRAGUE PRAYER SOCIETY NOVENA, LITANY, PRAYER INTENTIONS/THANKSGIVINGS, AND ADORATION The Infant Jesus of Prague Prayer Society invites parishioners and guests to join in prayer before our Infant Jesus shrine on 17 SEP 2014 at 01:00 PM. With donations to the Priests Retirement Fund, Catholics in the Archdiocese of San Francisco acknowledge with gratitude our priests years of faithful ministry and embrace the responsibility for helping them during their retirement. Announcements COLLECTIVE INTENTIONS FOR MASSES For some time the Catholic Church has allowed collective intentions at two Masses celebrated in the parish each week. These intentions are bundled together because there are more intentions requested than Masses available. Since the merits of each Mass are infinite the value of the Mass for each person at a collective Mass is the same as if it were an individual Mass intention. Nativity has always been a very popular place to have Masses said for living or deceased family or friends. In 2011 we began having collective Mass intentions on Saturday mornings at the 08:00 AM Mass. This helped ease our Mass intentions schedule. The intentions for the evening weekday Mass at always fill quickly. Because of this we are adding collective intentions once a week to the Masses. This will begin with the Masses in November. In January, one weekday Mass at will have collective intentions. It will not be offered on the same day each week, but rotate between days depending on the schedule. As in the past requests for Mass intentions should be directed to the parish office. VOCATIONS This weekend Fr. David Schunk, Vocation Director for the Archdiocese of San Francisco, will be speaking at all Masses about vocations. Fr. Schunk was ordained for the Archdiocese in 2010 and has been Vocation Director since In The Community ROSARY RALLY 2014: CALL TO PRAYER Please join Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone and Fr. Andrew Apostoli, C.F.R. for the fourth Annual Rosary Rally on 04 October 2014 at the U.N. Plaza on Market and 7th Street in San Francisco. The event begins with Mass for Hispanic Ministry Day in St. Mary s Cathedral at 10:00 AM. Following the Mass, there will be a procession to U.N. Plaza, where another group, led by our seminarians, will be praying the rosary in preparation for the arrival of the procession from the cathedral. The rally will end with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction at 12:00 PM at the U.N. Plaza. Full details of the event may be found at or by calling 415/ NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING CLASS Our next Natural Family Planning (NFP) class will be on Saturday, 20 September This class will give an overview of the benefits of NFP, which is based on up-to-date science and is individualized for every couple. It works with the body s natural rhythm and increases respect for the couple s fertility as God designed it. NFP is an investment in your marriage which you don t want to be without. The divorce rate for couples who use NFP is lower than the average. All engaged and married couples are welcome. Couples who are to be married at Nativity are required to take this class. The class is conducted by Finola Glassmoyer, a registered nurse who has been teaching NFP for many years. The hour-long class is held in the O Hare Center and begins at 09:00 AM. The weekend is shared within small groups who represent a wide variety of lifestyles. The weekend provides Spiritual growth through fellowship and trust An opportunity to renew and expand one s faith An ongoing support system to promote Christian commitment A women s retreat will be held October 2014 (Thursday evening through Sunday). Among his supporters was St. Cyprian. 17 SEP (Wednesday): THE SACRED STIGMATA OF SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI SAINT ROBERT BELLARMINE, Bishop ( ) Jesuit who taught and wrote extensively; he authored the most complete work of his time defending Catholicism against the Protestant attack. He also wrote catechisms for children and teachers, and was part of the commission for the 1592 revision of the Vulgate Bible. He was a spiritual advisor to Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, helped Saint Frances de Sales in the founding of the Visitation Order, and defended Galileo Galilei, with whom he corresponded regularly. He was also the head of the Vatican Library. 6 RELIGIOUS ITEMS FROM THE HOLY LAND Next weekend representatives from Land of Peace will be outside church after the Masses selling religious items from the Holy Land. These items are created by Christian families and handicapped of the Holy Land. Land of Peace is a nonprofit organization. Their mission is to help and support Christians of the Holy Land and also the Bethlehem Arab Society of Rehabilitation through the Patriarch of Jerusalem. Their main goal is to establish a charity hospital for the poor and sick Christians in the Holy Land. 40% of the profits from these sales go directly back to the families who have created the religious items; 20% goes to the Patriarch of Jerusalem; 20% toward the building of the charity hospital; and the final 20% for expenses. Please help Land of Peace help the Christian families in Bethlehem and protect them from emigrating from the land were Jesus was born. The traditional symbol of practitioners of the medical arts, known as the Rod of Asclepius, is variously believed to have its origins in either Greek mythology or in the Scriptural passage we read today, of Moses and the saraph serpents. While the Rod of Asclepius is used most consistently (and accurately) by professional medical associations around the world, many commercial medical groups incorrectly use the Caduceus (the Staff of Apollo) instead. The Rod of Asclepius has a single snake on a stick, while the Caduceus (traditional symbol of trade and commerce) has two entwined snakes and wings at the top of the staff. Young Believers NATIVITY SCHOOL OF RELIGION NEWS Nativity s School of Religion Children s Faith Formation Program begins on Sunday, 14 September 2014 at the 09:30 AM Mass; coffee and donuts will be served after Mass. Classes will officially begin on following Sunday, 21 September 2014, at the school for grades 1 to 6 from 08:15-09:15 AM. During XLT ( exalt ), teens from different Catholic parishes come together to pray and worship. The night is divided into three parts: praise and worship, a dynamic speaker, and adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament. Young people, 6th grade and above, are invited to this special evening. Teen Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers Wanted About once a month, preferably during the 05:00 PM Saturday Masses. Any young person who has been confirmed can participate in these leadership roles. Those who feel comfortable speaking in front of people can serve as a Lector. The role of the Eucharistic Minister is particularly ideal for those who have outgrown altar serving and who understand the reverence due to Our Lord in the Eucharist.
