LITURGY AT HOLY TRINITY The Holy Trinity May 26, 2013 +9:30 am To Our Guests: Welcome! Whoever you are, wherever you're from, or whatever your feelings about religion or spirituality, you are welcome here. Please fill out a yellow slip in the pew rack and place it in the offering plate. The next orientation session (to find out more or for those interested in membership): Next fall. More information on Holy Trinity, Lutheranism, worship practices, marriage and baptisms at the back of the church. To families with small children: We are glad you are here! If your child needs a break from the service, feel free to walk to the narthex/back of the church. Nursery: open 8:15-10:30 a.m. Use the garden entrance on Addison; nursery is inside the door. Special children's bulletins are on a table at the back of the church.

ABOUT TODAY'S LITURGY: "O Lord our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!" Today we celebrate the name of God: holy blessed Trinity. There is no other day quite like this one in the church s year. There is no other god like ours. Praise Father, Son, and Holy Spirit! Please turn off all cell phones before the liturgy begins. * those who are able may stand Bold all This bulletin is available in large print GATHERING The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. PRELUDE Allein Gott in der Höh sei Ehr Friedrich W. Zachau (1663-1712) Allein Gott in der Höh Nikolas Decius (c. 1485-1541) Fughette on Allein Gott Andreas Vetter (1666-1710) Following the introduction to the hymn, please stand and face the font at the rear of the nave. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. Incense, used in festive processions, adds the sense of smell in worship and shows the significance of our bodies and all of God s creation. The clouds of incense represent purification and the rising of our prayers. Used in many religions, incense has roots in both Judaism and Christianity. *GATHERING HYMN #413 Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty *PRESENTATION 2 Assembly response: We do. BAPTISM *PROFESSION OF FAITH Renunciation of Evil Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *THANKSGIVING AT THE FONT The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. *BAPTISM After each baptism the following is sung twice Text: Galatians 3:27, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Music: BAPTIZED IN CHRIST, Howard Hughes, b. 1930 Text 1969 ICEL; Music 1977 ICEL. Clothing with a White Robe Laying on of Hands Signing with the Cross *WELCOME Presentation of a Candle Let us welcome the newly baptized. We welcome you into the body of Christ and the mission we share; join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God s creative and redeeming word to all the world. 3

*CANTICLE OF PRAISE All Glory Be to God on High *GREETING The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. *PRAYER OF THE DAY 4

WORD FIRST READING: Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31 Christ, to whom the Trinity attests, was likened by the church fathers to this Woman Wisdom. Here already God is described as a plurality. For Christians, God is triune from the beginning: thus traditional biblical translations saw in Genesis 1:2-3 the Creator God, the Spirit (ruah), and the Word ("and God said"). In Christianity, the created world is very good, filled with the goodness of the triune Creator. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. RESPONSE Praise the Lord George F. Händel (1685-1759) Praise the Lord. Let songs of joy break forth. Sing alleluia. Praise His name forevermore. Shout, sing and dance, come dance and celebrate. Rejoice; let all within us praise His name. SECOND READING: Romans 5:1-5 Paul's point is clear and currently rather counter-cultural: God is available not to everyone, but to us through Jesus Christ, through whom we receive God's Spirit. The Spirit is not just any spirit, but a spirit that comes through the cross. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. *GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Hallelujah Sung first by the choir then by all. 5

*GOSPEL: John 16:12-15 That we are called Christian, the ones marked by Christ, is clear in this passage: the Father and the Spirit declare the truth we have witnessed in the crucified and risen Christ. Today in worship we receive this truth in the proclamation of this word. The holy gospel according to John. As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Sung in canon once through, as a round. (1) West side (piano side) of Nave begins; (2)East side of Nave follows; (3) finally, the choir joins. SERMON Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. SILENCE *PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. *PEACE 6 The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying, Peace be with you, or similar words.

MEAL GATHERING OF GIFTS AND SETTING OF TABLE Guests are invited to fill out the welcome slip in the pew and place it in the offering plate. ANTHEM Tunamba Mungu Atawale ( We Pray God to Reign ) Tunaomba Mungu atawale. Aee, aee, atawale, Tunaomba Mungu atawale. Tunaomba Roho atawale. Tunaomba Munguat awale. Tunaomba Yesu atawale. Tunaomba Roho atawale. We pray that our God may be praised here forever. May we find strength in God s mercy and love. We thank our Creator, Redeemer, Sustainer; Sing out our song to all people everywhere. *GREAT THANKSGIVING African, arr. John Paradowski It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God. You reveal your glory as the glory of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit: equal in majesty, undivided in splendor, one Lord, one God, ever to be adored in your eternal glory. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 7

During the prayer, the assembly sings these responses: As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. *THE LORD S PRAYER 8

Be seated. COMMUNION All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded or extended over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. ANTHEM We Are Yours Mark Patterson Holy God, creator of our inmost being, you spoke our first full thoughts and breathed our innocent prayers. You ve healed us, you ve led us, you ve loved us, you ve loved us, Holy God. Now we come to worship you. We come to worship you, mighty God, we come to praise you, Holy one, giving praise to your name in all we do, we are yours Lord. May our lives bring glory to you. We will go where you lead us for you alone have called us by name. Give us strength as we learn to love you more; give us faith, Lord, to trust you each day. SILENCE Stand. *PRAYER 9

SENDING Having heard the word and shared the eucharist, we are sent to live our baptism through words and deeds, making known the love of Christ, and working for justice and peace in our families, communities, and world. *BLESSING Turn to face the cross as it recesses, you may bow as it passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. *SENDING HYMN #414 Holy God, We Praise Your Name *SENDING Go in peace, serve the Lord. Our Worship is Ancient and New We celebrate a liturgy based on ancient patterns and rituals that go back to the early centuries of Christianity. We gather each Sunday to hear the scriptures and wrestle with their meaning for our lives today. We share the sacred meal of bread and wine and depart to serve a world in need. Though ancient, worship is always fresh and new as the gospel of Christ comes alive for our contemporary context. Time unplugged from electronic devices allows reflection and centering. Open to the Mystery we connect, strengthen and serve with joy. Things We re For Radical inclusivity regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation or religious/spiritual background. Embodied gathering in real time and sacred space. Multisensory liturgy that helps us delight in God s beauty. Intentional engagement with contemporary social, theological and spiritual issues. User-friendly liturgies. Preaching that is honest about the struggles of life and the grace of God. Robust congregational singing. Reverence and joy in worship that spills over into everyday life. Cultivating empowering relationships, not only at church but everywhere. Openness to questions and faith struggles. Treasuring mystery above certainty. Things We re Against Power and privilege that lead to prejudice and oppression. Racism, sexism, heterosexism and ableism. A religion that claims to have all the answers. Senseless violence. Negative and hateful partisanship. Superficial responses to life s painful and difficult realities. Boring sermons. Church services that don t connect with everyday life. Equating Christianity with the Religious Right. Indifference to injustice and suffering. Misuse of the earth and its resources. 15
