St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 A Message from an Old Farm Kid I told some students at Teutopolis Grade School near the end of the school year: Don t be like me when I was your age. I didn t crack a book from the day school let out until September when I went back to school. My brain got rusty. Read, go to the library; take out books and read. I grew up on a farm in Nebraska. We had livestock to care for, cows to milk by hand, a large garden to tend and vegetables to can, and there were always weeds to chop the days before herbicides. I had things to do and reading/studying was not on my priority list. Times are different now, and many children and youth are not kept busy on the farm. I know many are in activities offered by the Park District and are on ball teams. Set aside a half hour or more for reading each day. I hope Fr. Ken won t mind if I borrow the key idea from his homily last Monday to the students in grades 3 to 6. H-E-L-P. H-elp around home. E-njoy the summer. L-earn new things. P-ray every day. That sounds like a good summer program to me. I hope families will build their summer around what H-E- L-P stands for. I think such a plan will help the entire family have an enjoyable and worthwhile summer. Blessings, Fr. Vernon Sunday Reflection Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel. (Mark 16:15) What a simple, but immense charge Jesus gave to his disciples! He even told them that those who accepted their message would be saved, while those who didn t would be condemned. Imagine their reaction: Really, Lord? We re just fishermen. You can t expect us to go out and save the whole human race! He did send his apostles out to preach and convert the world, but he didn t send them alone. He made it so that people would be baptized not on the basis of the disciples preaching skills but in response to his own grace at work in their hearts. Likewise, the more open we are to God, the more his grace will flow through us. On this Feast of the Ascension, let s rejoice with the saints who have come before us, and let s commit ourselves to preaching to the saints who will come after us. None of the apostles could have guessed how far their yes to Jesus would take them or how much fruit they would bear for the kingdom. And neither can we. (Adapted from THE WORD AMONG US) Protecting God s Children Fr.
