Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church Belle Chasse, Louisiana Second Sunday of Advent Weekend of December 9/10, 2017 Today s second reading is about Christ s coming again, The day of the Lord, Peter calls it, but that day isn t December 25th. It s that other day, that second-coming-day about which Peter is concerned. He waits with great hope and an.cipa.on for God to remake the earth into a place of perfect jus.ce and peace. And he sets some demanding goals for the Chris.an community as it awaits that final day of accoun.ng and reconcilia.on: strive to be at peace, without spot or blemish. Chris.an stewards work for peace. As we await the coming of Christmas, what can we do to promote peace in our homes, workplaces, community and world? December 10, 2017 OLPH School News OLPH Middle School Art class is studying "Impressionism". The students created Monet-inspired pieces using various mediums: pastels, watercolors, and acrylic paint. They cannot wait to display their finished artwork in the halls of OLPH School. St. Vincent de Paul Report 10/1/2016-9/30/2017 OLPH PARISHIONERS ARE THE BEST Total income: Total disbursements: Assisted: Food distributed: Members served: Estimated miles in services: $19,502 $18,662 53 families (202 people) 230 times 313 hours 1456 St. Vincent depaul income is acquired from the poor box located in the back of church and personal donations. We are very fortunate to have such wonderful parishioners who give their time, talents and treasures to St. Vincent de Paul. The Society thanks you for your generosity. Usually for Christmas, we request gift cards for Lantern Light Ministry and clothing for Ozaman Inn residents. With the economy, all the other fundraising and second collections, we felt that maybe we should move our extra giving to the Lenten Season. Even though we will not have a Christmas drive this year, if you feel the call to donate to Lantern Light, Ozaman Inn, or St. Vincent de Paul, we will gladly accept your gifts and make sure its delivered to the correct location. Mark your calendars! There will be a Parent & Student meeting for those who will be receiving the sacrament of Confirmation next fall on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. in the church. This is for students who are presently in the 10th grade in both Catholic Schools and Non-Catholic Schools. For more information check the website at www.olphbc.org or contact C.C. Merritt in the parish office or by email at cre@olphbc.org. Second Grade parents there will be a parent meeting for those who are eligible to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist this year on Thursday January 11 at 6:00 p.m. in the church. This is for both school students and PSR students. For more information contact C.C.

Second Sunday of Advent Prayer for the 2nd Week of Advent O holy, patient, and loving God, in this season of grace-filled longing, we await the coming of your Son and our Savior. It is difficult for us to remember that this is a holy time. There are many distractions: commitments seem to pile up, and expectations are high. In the midst of our busy world, our busy lives, we need your help to remind us of what is important and necessary. While many of those things that we do not need will come to us in packages gleaming and bright, the one gift that will last comes from you alone, gracious God, as we grow in our awareness of your love. Bless us, our family and friends, and the food and the company that we share. Increase in us a growing urgency to celebrate the birth of your Son, in whose name we pray. Amen. 8 Modern Errors Every Catholic Should Know and Avoid (One will be published each week) 7. Anthropocentrism This term refers to the modern tendency to have man at the center and not God. It has been a long tendency in the world ever since the Renaissance. Sadly, though it has deeply infected the Church in recent decades. This is especially evident in the Liturgy, not intrinsically, but as practically and widely celebrated. Our architecture, songs and gestures, incessant announcements, and congratulatory rituals are self-referential and inwardly focused. The liturgy, as commonly celebrated seems more about us than God. Even the Eucharistic prayer which is directed entirely to God is usually celebrated facing the people. It is never good, especially in the Church, to consign God to the margins. This marginalization of God is evident not only in the liturgy, but in parish life which is often topheavy with activism rooted in the corporal works of mercy, but little attention to the spiritual works of mercy. Social organizations predominate, but it is hard to find interest in Bible Study, traditional novenas and other spiritual works devoted to God. PSR Nativity Play On Tuesday, December 12, and Wednesday, December 13, our PSR students will participate in our Annual Nativity Play on their scheduled PSR day. All parents and parishioners are invited to attend. The play will begin at 5:00 p.m. and will finish around 5:45 p.m. PSR students are to arrive at 4:45 p.m. and go directly to church. If you have any questions, please call CC Merritt at 394-0314. (Donations are being accepted to help defray the cost of the new PSR stable set. Put your donation in an envelope marked PSR Stable ) Announcing God through vigorous evangelization work is also rare and the parish seems more a clubhouse than a lighthouse. Human beings are important, Christian humanism is a virtue, but anthropocentrism is a common modern error rooted in excess. The worship of God and the spread of his kingdom is too little in evidence in many parishes. Parents too seem more focused on the temporal wellbeing of children, on their academic standing and so forth, but less concerned overall with the spiritual knowledge or wellbeing of them. God must be central if man is to be truly elevated. Did you know! About 15 percent of all hospitals in the U.S. are Catholic hospitals. In some parts of the world, the Catholic Church provides the only healthcare, education, and social services available to people.
