My Dear Friends, live in religious orders and are ordained priests. Throughout the history of our Church, we have had religious orders that have survived, like the Benedictine monks, or the Franciscan and Dominican Friars. We have also had religious orders that have disappeared due to lack of membership. Many of the popular orders, like the Jesuits, the Franciscans and the Christian Brothers, were very numerous at one time, but ever since the 1960 s there has been a mass exodus of these orders. My own religious order, the Marist Fathers, at one time had over 2500 priests and brothers throughout the world. They are currently just under a thousand now. When I joined them in 1999, there were over 250 in the United States. They are currently at 80. When our religious orders suffer from low membership, our Church also suffers. Consecrated life is very important for the health and wellbeing of our Catholic faith. These men and women are dedicated to the common life, and they point the way to eternal life by their renunciation of marriage and by living the life of celibacy. Torrington has had their share of religious sisters in our parishes here. Sadly, our churches have not had active religious sisters in over ten years. We are blessed to have Franciscans and Montfort Fathers in Winsted and Litchfield, respectively. Pope St. John Paul II wrote a beautiful exhortation on consecrated life, called in Latin, vita consecrata. In our Mass readings these last few weeks, we have heard the call of the first apostles, men who were called by Jesus to leave behind all they knew and to join him in his ministry. Consecrated men were responsible in the Dark Ages of preserving academia and books through the gifts of the monks who were able to write. Other consecrated men and women founded schools and universities, hospitals and nursing care. Many also were founded to be missionary and these orders sent their men and women across the world to spread the good news of Jesus Christ. Many religious orders were also instrumental in making sure that women and girls were given religious life and those many who are still joining religious orders today. Let us pray for an increase of men and women who will join the consecrated life as monks and nuns, as brothers and sisters, and as religious priests. God is calling men and women to live this common life, a life of celibacy for the sake of the Kingdom of God. May our young men and women be open to the Lord who may be calling them to this beautiful way of life. God bless. Fr. John If you could offer just one particular hour each week to sit with our Lord, in Eucharistic Adoration Monday(5-7pm) through Friday 5-8pm, or one hour each month for First Friday, please call Peg Michaud 860-307-9356 View our bulletin online: JohnPaulGreatParish.com 3 Saint John Paul the Great Parish Mondays: 5-7pm at St. Peter Tuesdays: 5-8pm at St. Francis Wednesdays: 5-8pm at St. Francis Thursdays: 5-8pm at St. Francis Fridays: 5-8pm at St. Francis (except 1 st Friday of the month) Nowhere does Jesus hear our prayers more readily than in the Blessed Sacrament - Blessed Henry Suson
