Pastor s Page Fr. Michael Rudolph Falling Asleep and Waking Up I ve heard that many young people are stressed out by a fear of dying. Not just when someone close to them leaves this life, but much of the time. Maybe that s because in our internet age the news of death is so much more available. Seemingly unending wars, frequent terrorist attacks and mass killings, and every day fatal car accidents, suicides and drug overdoses can shake young people up and older people too! What can we do to help? One thing we can do is to help young people in our lives to not be afraid of death. Jesus Christ made this possible by His own Resurrection from the dead. Because of His passing through death to new and glorious life, Christians for almost two thousand years have been able to see death as an opportunity to be welcomed, not a terror to be feared. So teaching young people about the Resurrection of Jesus, and our own future Resurrection, can be a great encouragement to them. Another thing we can do to help young people to not fear death is to acquaint them with the many holy people who have died young. Here are just a few of them Saint Aloysius Gonzaga was a Jesuit novice who died in the Year 1587 at the age of 23 after catching the plague from sick people he was taking care of in Milan, Italy. As he was dying, he wrote his mother a letter. This is how he began: May the comfort and grace of the Holy Spirit be yours forever, most honored lady. Your letter found me lingering still in this region of the dead, but now I must rouse myself to make my way on to heaven at last and to praise God for ever in the land of the living; indeed I had hoped that before this time my journey there would have been over. If charity, as Saint Paul says, means to weep with those who weep and rejoice with those who are glad, then, dearest mother, you shall rejoice exceedingly that God in his grace and his love for you is showing me the path to true happiness, and assuring me that I shall never lose him. Blessed Laura Vicun a was a Chilean girl who suffered from physical abuse by her mother s boss. Weakened by this maltreatment, she died of tuberculosis at the age of 12. On her deathbed, she offered her life for her mother s salvation. She told her: Mama, I offer my life for you. Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati was a joyful young Italian who enjoyed mountain climbing, music, and time with good friends. He was devoted to daily Mass and the Rosary. He was passionate about helping those in need, even giving his bus money to them and running home from the university in order to be on time for dinner with his parents. He died of polio in 1925, at the age of 24. Blessed Chiara was a young Italian woman who came down with bone cancer and died in 1990, at the age of 18. She refused morphine, instead wanting to share as much as possible in the sufferings of Jesus. The joy of Jesus never stopped shining through her. Blessed Isidore Bakanja was a young man who worked on a rubber plantation in the early years of the 20 th century in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The owner brutally beat Isidore for his Christian faith. Isidore suffered greatly from his wounds before he died six months later, saying he forgave the man who beat him, and would pray for him in heaven. Servant of God Frank Pariter was born in Virginia in 1897. He served as an altar boy and was active in the Boy Scouts, earning the rank of Eagle Scout. He joined the seminary and was sent to study for the priesthood at the North American College in Rome. There he died, at the age of 22, after contracting rheumatic fever. After his death, someone found an Act of Oblation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus that he had written a few months earlier. It reads: I have nothing to leave or give but my life and this I have consecrated to the Sacred Heart to be used as He wills. I have offered my all for the conversion of non-catholics in Virginia. This is what I live for and in case of my death what I die for. Since my childhood, I wanted to die for God and my neighbor. But if I go on living, every action of my life here is offered to God for the spread and the success of the Catholic Church of Virginia. I shall be of more service to my diocese in heaven than I can ever be here on earth. Saint Clelia Barbieri was a young Italian woman who was only 21 years old when she founded the religious order The Little Sisters of the Mother of Sorrows. She died two years later. The Sisters continue their missionary work, pastoral ministry, education of youth and care of the sick and elderly in Brazil, India, Italy and Tanzania. Blessed John Brenner was an athletic and mischievous teenager in Hungary who decided to become a Cistercian monk just before the Communists took over the country. As a monk, he took the name Anastasius (meaning Resurrection. ) He became a priest and was particularly effective in teaching children and in youth ministry, persevering in spite of threats against his life. On the night of December 14, 1957, he was called to give last rites to someone who was supposedly dying. Instead, he was ambushed on a forest trail, stabbed 32 times with knives and stomped on. When the villagers found his body in the morning, he was still protecting with his hands the Blessed Sacrament that he had with him. Father Anastasius was 26 years old. He had written, My greatest desire is to be a saint, to lead a holy life and to sanctify others. May the witness of these young men and women, and of many others, help young people of today and all of us to live, love God, and neighbor without counting the cost, and to look forward to being with Him forever, at whatever age we are called to leave this life and enter heaven. ~~Your fellow traveler through this short life, Father Rudolph

Saint of the Day Blessed Maria Fortunata Viti Anna Felice (the name her parents gave her) was born on February 10, 1827 to Luigi Viti and Anna Bono at their home in Veroli, south-east of Rome. She was the third of nine children. Her father ran a fairly successful business out of a factory, but when Anna was in her early teens the family was dealt a double blow. Luigi lost or was tricked out of his money and the business failed. At almost the same time, his wife died. He was so stunned by his losses that he became completely apathetic and unable to cope with his large family. Anna took on the role of mother to her brothers and sisters. She also went to work for another family that lived nearby in order to provide money for her own family to live on. Then a wealthy young man courted her for a while. She decided not to marry him, and instead on March 21, 1851, entered the Benedictine convent in Veroli as a lay sister, taking the name Maria Fortunata. She stayed there for almost seventy-two years, working sometimes as assistant infirmarian and sometimes as portress. She lived out the Benedicitne ideal of prayer and work in a beautiful way. She died on November 20, 1922. When she was beatified in 1967 by Blessed Pope Paul VI, he referred to her greatness and littleness. Blessed Maria Fortunata Viti, pray for us! (Excerpted and adapted with permission of the Publisher from Butler s Lives of the Saints, New Full Edition Paul Burns 2003, Published by Liturgical Press, Collegeville, MN) FROM THE MUSICIANS. A month or so ago we explained the various music groups and when they are used at St. Raphael s. Today we want to tell you of a coming change in music available at all Masses. Rudolph will explain in detail next week and give other information about our music. Speaking of music we would like to reiterate that our musical groups are open to everyone. New Cantor/Song Leaders are also welcome. If you are interested in any of these, contact the appropriate director. Sunday Choir: James Borsky. Schola: Ben Blackhawk. Agape: Gretchen Eckes.
