Reflections from Father Tom The Real Christmas Gift You might have read the short story, The Gift of the Magi written by O. Henry. I was reminded of this story when I wrote this column for Christmas. I really liked the story and wanted to share with you from my memory, which may lack details. The story goes like this: Jim and Della are a lovely couple living in poverty. But they have the richness of their love. As Christmas is approaching they want to give each other a Christmas gift. They could not afford to buy big gifts, as they were very poor. But in their own way they wanted to buy memorable gifts without the other knowing about each other s gift. Della noticed that Jim could not use the golden watch that was given to him by his father, as the chain was broken. So she wanted to buy a golden chain (bracelet) for the old golden watch. She checks her savings but the money is not enough to buy the chain. Della decides to sell her long beautiful hair to buy a golden chain. On the other hand, Jim has always admired Della s beautiful long hair. For Christmas he wants to buy an assortment of combs made out of tortoise shells with jeweled rims for her hair. Since he does not have enough money to buy the golden hair clips, he decides to sell his antique golden watch get the hair clips for Della. Here on the day of Christmas, they are to exchange their gifts; Della presents to Jim the golden chain for his watch, which was sold. Jim stands there to present the assortment of combs for Della s long hair, which she no longer has. They stare at each other and the gifts, which they could not use. The story ends that the love they had for each other was the greatest of all the material gifts they could share. The gift of sacrificial Love is the greatest of all. Christmas is the gift of Love from God. Greetings for a Blessed Christmas May your life be filled with the same Joy and Wonder felt by the Shepherds and the Magi at the Holy Manger in Bethlehem. We are Thankful for the joy you bring to each Liturgy. We are Blessed by the work of your hands to support our ministries and our faith community. We feel privileged to be allowed to serve this community of believers as we journey together to bring about Christ s Kingdom. May the miracle of Christmas fill your heart with His gift of love. Merry Christmas! Peace to all! Happy New Year! St. Margaret Mary Staff I wish you all a Very Happy Christmas with the gifts of love. I thank you for your lovely Christmas Greeting Cards and for your lovely gifts during this holy season. May the Infant Jesus bless you and your children who are the image of the baby Jesus! Merry Christmas! And may God bless you and your families in the year 2018! Fr.
