St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Feast Day: January 4 th Born into a well-to-do New York family in 1774, Elizabeth Ann Seton had the positive influence a grandfather who was an Episcopal minister and a step mother whom she would accompany on visits to attend to the poor. At 19, Elizabeth married William Seton, a wealthy business man. They were blessed with 5 children. Elizabeth s life changed dramatically with the decline of both William s business and health. Suffering from tuberculosis, William, Elizabeth and their daughter Anna Maria traveled to Italy in 1803 upon his doctors recommendation of a warmer climate. William died shortly after their arrival. At 30, she was widowed, poor, with 5 children to support. Through the care she experienced from Catholic family friends while in Italy she felt drawn to the Catholic Faith. Their devotion to the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist deeply impressed her as did Catholics devotion to the Blessed Mother and their belief in the apostolic foundations of the Church. Although it meant rejection by both family and friends, Elizabeth became Catholic in 1805 back in America. While caring for her children, she opened a school for Catholic girls in Baltimore in 1810 with the financial support of a wealthy convert Samuel Sutherland Cooper.. At this time Elizabeth.established a religious community in Emmitsburg dedicated to the care of the children of the poor. [This was] the first congregation of religious sisters to be founded in the United States, and its school was the first free Catholic school in America. This modest beginning marked the start of the Catholic parochial school system in the United States (Wikipedia). St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, pray for us! Fr.
