Silent Night My wife and I recently took three of our grandchildren to a Christmas concert at the Queen of Peace Cemetery s outdoor chapel. They also had a live nativity. It was unlike any other live nativity I have ever seen because all the children were allowed to wander amongst the animals, and mingle with the children playing the various parts. It made me think how wonderful it would be if we could all wander right into the actual setting for a hands-on interaction with Jesus, Mary, Joseph, shepherds and kings. During the evening, my grandson Evan cornered the farmer who provided the animals and filled his ear with endless questions about the animals. What they eat, where they sleep, why they don t run away, etc., etc., etc. Evan has a healthy curiosity and is not shy about asking questions. When his questions were satisfied, he thanked the farmer and went back to walking from one animal to the next. Actually it wasn t walking. Evan doesn t walk. Evan bounces. The animals seemed to understand. My grandson Andrew was trying to learn all the animal names and repeat them. He said, Donkey, and Goat but when we got to the sheep we had a bit of an argument. I d say Sheep and Andrew would say Cow. Sheep, Cow, Sheep, Cow, Sheep, Cow... This went on for multiple iterations until I finally gave up. Joking, I said Chewbacca as in the big, hairy creature from Star Wars. Andrew repeated this with a little sing-song ending and a big smile. Then he looked back at the sheep and said, Cow. Granted, it was a rather large sheep. My granddaughter Shannon, who really likes to talk, was passionately hurling a barrage of comments and questions at Grandmom. Her main concern was that none of the animals would lick her. Suddenly she saw the young girl playing Mary. We watched as she went into a very long and exceedingly rare time of complete silence. She simply stared. It could have been the clothing the girl was wearing or perhaps the baby doll she was holding, but Shannon was captivated. Whatever her reason, as most of the children skittered about to pet the animals, it seemed highly appropriate to simply stare at Mary and Jesus in silent awe. Of all the wonderful moments that we shared that night, the mental picture I have of Shannon entranced by the image of this young girl playing the role of Mary was the image that says the most to me about Christmas this year. There are simply no words to describe what God did for us on this day, out of pure and perfect love. Silent night, holy night! EVANGELISM IN ACTION: Take a silent moment to stare at the Nativity, and reflect on what God has done for us. Article written by Keith Thompson. Please send your comments, thoughts and suggestions to newevangelism@gmail.com or call Keith at 772-631-2080. 2015 offertory envelopes are available at the Parish Office for registered members. Please pick them up during office hours Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday 9-12 & 1-4. Beginning Friday, January 2nd. Thank you.

Wishing all of our Gospel families a Blessed and Wonderful New Year! No class this week Classes resume January 11 th.see you then!!!! THE CATHOLIC FAITH EXPLAINED The sacrament of the Eucharist lies at the very heart of the Catholic faith. When we receive Holy Communion, we are united with Jesus in the most intimate way possible here on earth. The almighty God, Creator of the universe, humbles himself so that he can become one with each of us. God is within us, within our very souls, each time we attend Mass and receive communion. YDisciple Classes will resume in January 2015... Watch the bulletin for future announcements. Questions call Dave or Jacki Ottaviani 772-334-6271 Join us January 18th as we take a closer look at The Eucharist as Real Presence, Sacrifice and as Communion. Thank you for your support, The Catholic Daughters of the Americas. The sentiment A New Year, a new you is all too common. The Lord our God created us in His likeness and image and through our Baptism we became pure. It is from that image and creation we all too often stray. Upon contemplating our lives at that time we consider a change or a new self. Next time we consider a new self may we prayerfully consider the fact that we do not need a new self, but a return to the pure and perfect person God created us to be. May our hearts go back to that beautiful heart with God created us all. A very Joyful, Blessed New Year to everyone. A CATHOLIC GUIDE TO END-OF-LIFE DECISIONS As a woman of religious conviction, Anne receives great consolation from her faith in God. She receives pastoral care from the hospital chaplains and Communion from the Eucharistic ministers. A priest has given her the Sacrament of Anointing, and should it become necessary, he is ready to administer Viaticum. In the past several weeks, however, Anne has begun to experience more pain. As her doctor performs new tests and prescribes additional medications, Anne experiences a greater degree of suffering. Pain and suffering at times may be a profoundly distressing experience that raises deep questions about the meaning of life and even the nature of God. How can a merciful God allow us to experience the suffering of illness? It should be comforting to reflect on the fact that God Himself entered into human suffering through His Son who suffered and died so that we could overcome death. Suffering and death entered the world with the sin of our first parents, but Christ's obedience to the Will of His Father can now infuse these afflictions with great redemptive power. By virtue of our being made one with Christ in Baptism, we can join our suffering to that of Our Savior on the Cross at Calvary and so assist in his work of salvation for the whole human race. Christ is with us during our illness and shares in our suffering as we share in His. For those who have lost their faith in God, the suffering and helplessness of serious illness make little sense. Some may \even come to contemplate suicide or euthanasia. Others who accept the existence of God wrongly believe that He does not care whether we shorten our lives. The testimony of Sacred Scripture and the constant teaching of the Catholic Tradition speak against ever directly intending one's own death. The Catholic, with a deep faith in Jesus Christ, may not be able to understand suffering, but he knows he can offer it up as a powerful source of grace for himself and others.
