THE FISHERS OF MEN St. John Fisher Council 12856 Newsletter Serving the Catholic Communities of St James and St Thomas More The Knights of Columbus are dedicated to the propagation of the Roman Catholic faith Oct-Nov-Dec 2013 Volume 7 No. 06 Pope to canonize Blessed John XXIII, John Paul II April 27 Grand Knights Report St John Fisher Council just completed another excellent Tootsie Roll drive for Persons With Intellectual Disability (PWID). Sales at both St James and St Thomas More will continue this month in conjunction with membership drives. Increasing our rolls is what we need to do so we can have more assistance with our many activities and be able to do more for the community and the parishes. Please help before and after the Masses this month. We are entering that very holy time of year and will be selling Christmas cards as part of the Keep Christ in Christmas Program. Sometimes it s hard for people to realize that this is not a retail-driven holiday so we need to continue to remind people that the true meaning of the holiday is His birth and not the presents. The holidays are also a time when St Vincent de Paul distributes food to those in need so consider bringing in food or donations to our meetings so we can provide this food to the St James food bank for their use. Brother Marty Bartel is working on our first Memorial Mass in November to remember those Knights who we have lost from St John Fisher Council as well as others. The Mass will be during the week, but you should plan on attending (date to be announced, but Marty will have details) so we can show our support for the families who have endured the ultimate loss of our fellow brothers. Congratulations go out to John Ingram Jr. who has become a Knights of Columbus Field Agent. He is a great person for the job and I know that I would be honored to have his help during those worst of times for our families. Unfortunately, he will not be able to continue as a trustee for our Council, but he will always be a member, and if we are lucky, he may even become our insurance representative. Good luck to you John. Thanks for all you do and ensure that you have a very blessed holiday season. I am very proud to be part of this Council and for all the things we are doing for our fellow man. There is still so much more we can accomplish and I look forward to our continued service. Thanks again. Vivat Jesus, Butch Kohs Cell: 480 280-6871 Recognizing that Blessed John XXIII and John Paul II have widespread reputations for holiness and that years of studying their lives and actions have proven their exceptional virtue, Pope Francis announced he would declare his two predecessors saints at a single ceremony April 27. Blessed John Paul, known as a globetrotter, served as pope from 1978 to 2005 and was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI on Divine Mercy Sunday, May 1, 2011. Blessed John XXIII, known particularly for convoking the Second Vatican Council, was pope from 1958 to 1963; Blessed John Paul beatified him in 2000. Pope Francis has emphasized God's mercy and readiness to forgive those who recognize their need for pardon. He told reporters on the flight from Brazil that Pope John Paul's promotion of Divine Mercy Sunday showed his intuition that a new "age of mercy" was needed in the church and the world. Asked to describe the two late popes, Pope Francis said Blessed John was "a bit of the 'country priest,' a priest who loves each of the faithful and knows to care for them; he did this as bishop and as a nuncio." He was holy, patient, had a good sense of humor and, especially by calling the Second Vatican Council, was a man of courage, Pope Francis said. "He was a man who let himself be guided by the Lord." As for Blessed John Paul, Pope Francis told the reporters I think of him as 'the great missionary of the church," because he was "a man who proclaimed the Gospel everywhere."

St John Fisher Council Receives Double Star Award In a letter from the Supreme Grand Knight Carl Anderson to Grand Knight Butch Kohs Worthy Grand Knight: I would like to congratulate you and Council 12856 on attaining Star Council status for the 2012-2013 fraternal year. You and your council have surpassed your membership quota and attained at least 200 percent growth thus earning Double Star Council. Your council is one of only 333 councils that achieved the elite Double Star recognition. I would like to thank you and your council members for your hard work and determination in helping our order to grow. Please accept the enclosed Double Star lapel pin as a token of appreciation for your efforts. I encourage you to strive for even greater growth in the future, and I thank you for your continued support. There is ONLY ONE more training session for any new volunteers and that is October 19, at 9 AM at the Stadium. Please let Butch or Rich Miller know if you want to attend this training or need more information. Each One Reach One! Reach out and touch someone by recruiting one new member.
