TORRINGTON, CT My Dear Friends, Today, August 28 th, is the feast day of St. Augustine. Yesterday, we celebrated the feast day of his mother, St. Monica. St. Augustine is most famous for his autobiography, Confessions, and the famous quote from that book, You have made us for yourself O Lord, and our hearts are restless, until they rest in you. St. Monica is famous for spending thirty years of her life praying for her son to find God and to become a Christian. It was her perseverance in prayer and in tears, as well as the preaching of St. Ambrose, that finally opened the heart of St. Augustine to become baptized. St. Augustine went on to become one of our Church s greatest saints and bishops. He fought many different heresies throughout his tenure as bishop, and his many sermons and treatises earned him the name of Doctor of Grace. He is one of the four great Latin doctors of the Catholic Church, the other three being, St. Ambrose, St. Jerome and St. Gregory the Great. The four great Greek doctors of our Catholic faith are, St. John Chrysostom, St. Basil the Great, St. Gregory of Nazienzen and St. Athanasius. Out of the 36 recognized doctors of the Roman Catholic Church, there are only two popes, St. Gregory the Great and St. Leo the Great. Maybe one day, we will have St. John Paul the Great. St. Augustine has an interesting history, which you can read if you pick up his book, Confessions. His brilliance and oratorical skills were unmatched at that time. When you read about his mother, St. Monica, in the autobiography, you can sense the love and devotion he had for her. As she was dying, St. Augustine was trying to get her back to her home country. St. Monica replied to her son not to worry. It does not matter where she dies or where she is buried, for she knows her true home is heaven. All she asked of her two sons is that they remember her at the altar of the Lord. We have a beautiful and powerful DVD movie at the parish office on St. Augustine called Restless Heart: The Confessions of St. Augustine. It is worth watching to get some insight into the man who became a great saint. St. Augustine, besides being the patron saint of theologians, is also the patron saint of brewers. More importantly, his mother, St. Monica, is the patron saint of difficult marriages and troubled children. Her prayers and intercession are badly needed in today s society. Let the prayers of St. Augustine and St. Monica help us in our fight against evil, as well as lead us into a deeper relationship with our Lord. Our hearts will always be restless until they rest in God. God bless Father John Please remember to PRAY FOR OUR TROOPS Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Held First Friday of each month for 24 hours Could you not watch one hour with me? - Mark 14:37 Adoration will start on Friday, April 1 st at 8:00am until Saturday, April 2 nd at 8:00am at Sacred Heart Church. Music will be performed between the hours of 7-8pm. The doors will be locked in the evenings for security purposes. Please ring bell on side entrance for late hours of adoration. Come and pray for an hour! A thousand years of glory in the palaces of men cannot be worth the sweetness of one hour spent before the tabernacle. St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother A Note from Heaven I give you 720 hours a month. Will you share one of those hours in a conversation with your heavenly Father before the Blessed Sacrament this month? Pick anytime. I ll be there. ANNUAL SUMMERTIME CAMPAIGN Despite the summertime fun and vacations that come with the good weather, many mothers & children still need assistance in our communities. Two Hearts needs your help to meet their needs Two Hearts Pregnancy Care Center is a community based, nonprofit organization located in Torrington, Connecticut. The Center services women in northwestern Connecticut as they face the challenges of an unplanned pregnancy and raising their children without basic resources. We have been fortunate to be able to provide emotional support, parenting skills and supplies (diapers, clothing, baby food, formula, cribs, etc.) to all those who come to our door. The demand for our services continues to grow as new mothers, despite facing difficult challenges in their lives, have made the decision to give their children life and turn to Two Hearts for assistance. However, during the summertime, as people leave for vacations and partake in other summer enjoyment, the donations to Two Hearts dramatically decrease. Come join us for An Evening of Hope St. Francis Xavier Parish in New Milford invites you to join us as we welcome singer/songwriter Michael John Poirier (www.prayerbreaks.org) on Sunday, August 28th from 6-9 p.m. The event will start with a Baked Ziti supper, then we will enjoy songs & stories with Mr. Poirier. The evening will include Eucharistic Adoration with prayerful music. There is no cost for the event, but we will be taking up a free will donation to offset expenses. For more information, or to RSVP, please call: 860-354-2202. Please help us meet the basic needs of these mothers and children by making a donation today. Help these mothers and children enjoy their summertime. Two Hearts mission is the pro-life message of the Catholic faith in action. Defending Our Religious Liberty #235 -Aug. 28, 2016 Those who say that the Catholic Church is discriminating against poor women by opposing the health care mandate are completely misinformed. The Catholic Church is against requirements contained in the mandate that would force them to pay for surgical procedures such as: sterilization, abortion-inducing drugs, and contraception that go against our moral convictions, and therefore, impede religious freedom.. If you haven t done so already, please voice your opposition to the federal health care mandate by calling U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia Mathews Burwell at 202-205-5445, and your elected representatives. Let them know that the mandate is in violation of our First Amendment right to religious freedom. If you have called, call again, our representatives need to listen to us. Our success has been made possible by an outstanding team of volunteers, financial support from numerous individuals, such as yourself, local organizations, the Catholic parishes in northwestern Connecticut, and the Archbishop s Annual Appeal. Thank you for your consideration of our request. Detach and mail donation stub below.
