FROM THE RABBI S DESK Imagine being a prisoner in your own body, fully aware, entirely conscious, thinking and emotionally feeling, and yet unable to move or speak at all. For many suffering WHAT A from ALS, or VICTIM OF ALS Lou Gehrig s Disease, that CAN TEACH US is exactly what their life ABOUT OUR POW- looks like day in and day ER OF SPEECH: out. Through JUST SHINE A a couple of viral videos, LITTLE LIGHT last week the Jewish world was introduced to an extraordinary individual suffering from ALS. Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz and his wife Dina, together with their seven children, were the dedicated spiritual leaders of the Chabad in Temecula, California. R Yitzi was always the life of the party, filled with energy, enthusiasm, and love for all people. In 2013, however, his life dramatically changed when he suddenly started slurring his speech and found walking difficult. He was diagnosed with Bulbar ALS and soon after he was no longer able to walk and his voice disappeared entirely. In a short three years, R Yitzi, fortyone years old, has become completely paralyzed and breathes through a permanent ventilator. His only means of connecting with the world is by moving his eyes which allow him to control a screen and choose the letters one by one that spell out words that combine into a sentence and turn into a paragraph. Remarkably, R Yitzi publishes a weekly blog (http://yitzihurwitz.blogspot.com/) with a Dvar Torah on the Parsha, which usually contains a message of faith, hope, and optimism. It takes him all day to write the message and leaves him exhausted and spent, but he wouldn t have it any other way. He once wrote, I don t know why G-d made this happen, but there must be something I can accomplish now, that I wasn t able to before this. I have always taught others that everything G-d does is for the good although we don t always see it openly. So now, when this happened to me, I have to live with this same belief and deepen my faith, so that it is not just a matter of words. Recently, R Yitzi s family found an old memory card and discovered an original song he had composed called Shine a Little Light. Famous Jewish musicians worked together to produce a wonderful version of the song and music video tribute to him. In cannot be a coincidence that R Yitzi s story has gone viral during the very weeks that we read about the gift of speech and the power it contains. We must never take for granted the capacity to communicate easily or the potency in that gift. In fact, Shlomo HaMelech, the wisest of all men, teaches us (Mishlei 18:21) Maves v chaim b yad lashon, death and life are in the hand of the tongue. Speech can be used to build, to create, to uplift, to encourage, to console and to provide confidence and worth. Or it can be used for what the Torah dedicates two full portions to, namely the consequences of using speech to diminish and destroy, to isolate and to denigrate. How we use our power and gift of speech says everything about who we are and what we strive to be. Eleanor Roosevelt once said, Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, small minds discuss people. The Parsha of the metzorah, the one who is stricken with spiritual leprosy after speaking gossip begins by reminding us that the choice of whether to use speech for the purpose of being constructive or destructive is ours: adom ki yiheyeh b or b saro if a person will have on the skin of his flesh. A number of commentators ask,why does the Torah employ the term adom for man? Normally, when the Torah is teaching Jewish law it uses the word ish, why here does it say adom? https://youtu.be/vplawri0poy https://youtu.be/ugwochobb40 Perhaps the Torah uses the unusual term adom at the beginning of the discussion of the metzorah to remind us of the original use of the word adom, in the chapters of creation in Parshas Bereishis: Vayehi ha adom l nefesh chaya, and man became a living being. This pasuk describes man gaining life and becoming a living creature, in distinction to animals. Unkelus translates the terms l nefesh chaya as l ruach melalela, meaning a talking being. According to Unkelus, what distinguishes man from the rest of creation is the ability to talk, to communicate and to express. Perhaps the Torah chooses to use the term adom in introducing the laws of the metzora in order to remind us of the original adom and that as a ruach m malela, a speaking being, we have a choice. We can use words to construct or destruct, to build or to destroy. The Sefer HaChinuch writes, The greatest treasure which the human being possesses is the power of speech, because through this, he is greater than all other creatures. Rabbi Emanuel Feldman, formerly a prominent Rabbi in Atlanta, writes in his memoirs of the most difficult question he was asked in his entire rabbinic career. He once received a call from a woman who was desperate to meet with him. When they met, he asked her what is so urgent, how could he help? The woman went on to say, Rabbi, I have cancer of the larynx and next week and I am having surgery to have my larynx removed. This was before the advent of the device that when placed next to the voice box emits an electric voice. And so she asked him, Rabbi, I will never be able to speak again, but I can chose the final words my lips will ever utter, what should they be? Rabbi Feldman describes this as his most difficult question. Page 2

What would you answer and what would you choose? Would your last words be an expression of love to a spouse or children, would they be a statement of your faith, would it be a prayer that you offer or a song you sing? If you could only speak one more time, what would you say? And, if that is what you would say if you had one last chance to speak, why not say it now? Why not value every opportunity to communicate as if it is our last. Last week s Parsha, Shemini, discusses the laws of kashrus, of what we eat, consume and ingest. Rav Yisroel Salanter points out that it is followed immediately by this week s Parsha dealing with lashon hara to remind us that what comes out of our mouth is as important as what goes into it. Though Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz is paralyzed and only able to painstakingly communicate through his eyes, he continues to inspire with his indomitable spirit, his courage and faith and his joyful soul. If that is what he accomplishes with the greatest limitations, imagine what we could do if we all used our power of speech to shine a little light. Rabbi Efrem Goldberg Sponsorship opportunity still available for more information, please contact Matthew Hocherman at mjh@brsonline.org BOCA RATON SYNAGOGUE DERECH ERETZ STATEMENT In the spirit of our mission Valuing Diversity and Celebrating Unity, we believe that a community is built on the collective engagement of individuals representing differing perspectives, whether religious, political, or social. As Boca Raton Synagogue is an environment where all of its members and visitors need to feel valued and welcomed, members are required to comport themselves in a manner which reflects mutual respect and a sense of inclusiveness. In our Synagogue, we value debate about pressing issues. This is consistent with the American democratic tradition. Our sages saw the value of arguments conducted L Shem Shamayim, for the sake of heaven, believing that great minds who engage in respectful debate will arrive at better solutions. They valued and welcomed alternate views, as do we. Derech Eretz, good and proper conduct, and mutually respectful dialogue are core values of the Synagogue community. These create a safe place for inspiration and spiritual growth, the central purpose of the Synagogue. It is a violation of Jewish law and ethics to use harsh language (vitriol) to demonize or to marginalize people with whom one may disagree. Uncivil expression reflects negatively on our Synagogue as well as on the individuals who engage in such behavior. Boca Raton Synagogue expects its members to act and to speak with kindness and sensitivity to others. It is only in this fashion that a strong, vibrant, and harmonious community can be created and maintained. Adherence to this policy is a requirement for membership in good standing at the Boca Raton Synagogue. In line with our recently published Derech Eretz Statement, we mention some examples of how we can be more sensitive toward others and create an even better community. Please do NOT walk towards to exit during Kaddish... Even if you don't walk out, it is insulting. Different families are going to make a variety of educational choices for their children. This must not lead to separation; we should strive to find commonality with our fellow members All of these Mensch Messages have been submitted to the office. If you have a Mensch Message you would like us to promote, please email us at office@brsonline.org Page 3

ISRAEL UPDATE SOCIAL ACTION In yet another indication of its anti Israel focus, the United Nations has decided to censor displays on the topics of Zionism, Jerusalem, and Israeli Arabs included in a new exhibit about Israel, deeming them "inappropriate." Israel's Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, organized the exhibit in cooperation with Stand With Us. Danon has written to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, demanding that the decision be revoked. If the decision is not revoked, Danon threatened to display the censored topics as part of an exhibit protesting the absurdity of the UN's decision. "By censoring displays on Zionism, the UN undermines the very existence of the State of Israel as the home of the Jewish people," Danon said. "We won't allow the UN to censor the fact that Jerusalem is Israel's eternal capital." About 40 years ago, the UN passed a resolution defining Zionism as racism, which was cancelled 16 years later. Danon asserted that the UN's decision to censor the display is in practice exactly the same as that resolution. Pre-Pesach Learning with שליט א Rav Pinhas Zevihi We have the tremendous zekhut of hosting Rav Zevihi throughout next week and Shabbat. Rav Zevihi is a world renown Posek and author of very influential sefarim and teshuvot. Rav Zevihi will give a communal shiur Wednesday night after Arvit, host a Friday night Oneg, deliver divrei Torah after Shaharit on Shabbat, and give a shiur next Shabbat, a half hour before Minhah (5:15pm). Everybody is invited to make preparing for Pesach more than just about cleaning and cooking but also about spiritually preparing by learning about the laws and inspiration that Pesach provides. Parshah Thought Frequently mistranslated as leprosy, tzara at is a spiritual malady. There are no antibiotics to treat tzara at or vaccines to prevent it. What may be the most telling about the nature of tzara at is how the diagnosis is made. Beyond a mere skin disorder, a metzora is also tamei. However, only a Kohen can declare tum ah. Until that declaration, no matter what his skin looks like or a physician may diagnose, the person remains tahor. Similarly, on the other end of the spectrum, when the metzora is healed and wishes to return to normal life, he must have a Kohen assist him to become tahor. The Sefat Emet points out that considering Hazal s famous understanding that tzara at is a form of punishment for lashon ha-ra (slander), the Kohen s necessary participation makes a lot of sense. Aharon ha-kohen (the forbearer and archetype for all later kohanim) is embodied by being an אוהב שלום ורודף שלום (lover and pursuer of peace). These are the attributes necessary to correct and resolve that which led to speaking lashon ha-ra in the first place. But why make the initial declaration of tum ah dependent on the Kohen s declaration? The Sefat Emet explains that beyond a mere punishment, tzara at is also a corrective measure. On a metaphysical level, it is a way to bring the negative forces that led one to speak lashon ha-ra to the surface. It is Hashem s way of getting a person to realize not only that they have done something wrong, but that the wrong action (the lashon ha-ra) was motivated by negative attributes. But more than Hashem just pointing it out, He provides a way for correction by bringing it the surface and helping it leave the body. It is a sign of Hashem s love for us that He helps us correct that which is wrong and therefore a perfect role for the lovers of peace and harmony (the kohanim) to actively participate in. Page 8

Wednesday, May 4, 2016 Yom Hashoah Sponsored by the BRS K.A.D.I.S.H. Please contact Rabbi Gershon Eisenberger at rge@brsonline.org TREBLINKA S LAST WITNESS Two Showtimes Wednesday night, May 4 following the BRS Yom Hashoah Program Thursday, May 5 at 10:00am in the BRS With the death of Samuel Wallenberg in February, the last surviving witness of the horrific crimes committed by Nazi Germany at Treblinka has gone. Join us for this moving documentary about his remarkable life. At the age of 76, Tova Friedman is among the youngest people to survive the Nazi Holocaust, and one of the few Jewish children to have lived through the nightmarish ordeals of Auschwitz. She was one of 5,000 Jewish children living in the Polish town of Tomashov, near Lodz, before World War II. At the end of the war only five children from Tomashov were still alive. Friedman, who has four children and five grandchildren, spends much of her time speaking about her experiences during the Shoah in schools and to organizations. Her story appears in the 1998 book Kinderlager. Of her story, Friedman says, I speak to everyone who wants to hear, because the survivors are disappearing. One day, she added, people will only see us in videotapes. She said that she wants to make sure people see us as witnesses in case someone tells us it didn t happen. She sees what she is doing as a sort of legacy, she said. I don t want those who have been killed to be forgotten.
