To sign up, Linda at Linda@ brsonline.org This was the what s app message from Friday: Like Noach, we can sometimes feel we face a mabul in the world, a flood of chaos, stress, conflict and challenges. Noach and his family survived by retreating into the teiva, the ark, and so can we. Some say the word teiva, which means letter, is a reference to the letters of the Torah and that when we immerse ourselves in Torah study, we can find shelter, refuge and protection from the threats of the world around us. The Slonimer Rebbe quotes the Zohar who says that Noach comes from the word menucha and is a reference to the refuge and serenity we can find in Shabbos. If all week we are flooded with with s, texts, obligations, responsibilities and stresses, we can retreat into Shabbos, our teiva, and find peace and serenity. Use shabbos to rest physically, emotionally and spiritually and reenergize to emerge from the teiva and re-enter the world for another protective week. Have a revitalizing Shabbos and a Chodesh Tov! Our sages saw the value of arguments conducted L Shem Shamayim, for the sake of heaven, believing that great minds who engage in respectful debate will arrive at better solutions. They valued and welcomed alternate views, as do we. Derech Eretz, good and proper conduct, and mutually respectful dialogue are core values of the Synagogue community. These create a safe place for inspiration and spiritual growth, the central purpose of the Synagogue. It is a violation of Jewish law and ethics to use harsh language (vitriol) to demonize or to marginalize people with whom one may disagree. Uncivil expression reflects negatively on our Synagogue as well as on the individuals who engage in such behavior. Boca Raton Synagogue expects its members to act and to speak with kindness and sensitivity to others. It is only in this fashion that a strong, vibrant, and harmonious community can be created and maintained. Adherence to this policy is a requirement for membership in good standing at the Boca Raton Synagogue. In line with our Derech Eretz Statement, we mention some examples of how we can be more sensitive toward others and create an even better community. It is a poor message and a lack of courtesy to read while the Rabbi or a guest is speaking. Please do not ever exit the parking lot through the entrance. 7 ISRAEL UPDATE SOCIAL ACTION Interesting news from the UN: Former French Culture Minister, Audrey Azoulay, on Friday became the next Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Azoulay, born in Paris to a Moroccan Jewish family, defeated candidates from Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt, and Qatari diplomat, Hamad Bin Abdulaziz Al-Kawari, who has been accused of endorsing, encouraging, sponsoring and supporting projects and programs with blatant anti-semitic content. The final vote took place one day after the US and Israel had decided to leave UNESCO over its anti-israel bias. Vice President, Mike Pence, has accepted an invitation to be the guest of honor and keynote speaker in November at a special celebration hosted by Israel s Permanent Mission to the United Nations. The gathering will celebrate seventy years since the November 29, 1947 United Nations vote to establish a Jewish State in the Land of Israel. The celebration of that vote will take place in the structure which served as the UN headquarters from 1946 to 1950, and which today houses New York s Queens Museum. Rashi, quoting the Midrash, explains that it was the people s way of trying to wage war with Hashem since they felt that it was unfair that He alone inhabits the Heavens. Maharal adds a level of sophistication to this somewhat strange motivation that the people did not want to wage a conventional war against Hashem. Rather, they understood that the Heavenly spheres influence life on this world. The people were looking for some way to ascend Heavenward, and through some magical means, be able to better understand these metaphysical notions. In doing so, they hoped to be able to take over this Heavenly system and be themselves able to direct what happens in the world. But Maharal challenges, if that were the case, why build the Migdal in a valley and not a hilltop? Maharal explains that ultimately, there was no need to actually ascend anywhere. The Migdal, being so much taller and larger than man, represented something above the people s level of understanding and knowledge. It was meant to be a man-made majestic monument greater and taller than man himself, as a challenge to the Heavens. This challenge was something that Hashem had to quash quickly and decisively. This lesson rings particularly relevant to modern life, where our own Migdalim not necessarily the tallest structures, but those that represent man s majesty and dominion over creation often seem to give us a false impression that we can finally control all aspects of what happens in this world. The Torah here is trying to remind us, that one of the most fundamental lessons is that we recognize that at the most basic level, we, and the whole world, are subject to Hashem s influence and direction.
