From the Senior Pastor s Desk September 2017 Word for the Month: Centered in Christ Scripture of the Month: 1 John Thought for the Month: Meditations of the Heart is a beautiful collection of meditations and prayers by one of our greatest spiritual leaders. Howard Thurman, the great spiritualist and mystic, was renowned for the quiet beauty of his reflections on humanity and our relationship with God. This collection of fifty-four of his most well -known meditations features his thoughts on prayer, community, and the joys and rituals of life. Within this collection are words that sustain, elevate, and inspire. From "A Man Becomes His Dream" to "I Need Courage" to "The Season of Remembrance," Thurman addresses those moments of trial and uncertainty and offers a message of hope and endurance for people of all faiths. Stephen Ministers Training Update Dear Asburyans Remember, gifts to Fund Our Furnace should be in addition to your tithes and offerings. The church still must pay its everyday expenses. Thank you. Our Stephen Ministers are learning about listening this week. Please continue to pray for them as they grow in their ability to provide caring ministry on behalf of our congregation. Session Three The Art of Listening Listening is an essential part of Stephen Ministry. Stephen Ministers use active listening skills to help people recognize and accept the feelings they are experiencing. In this session Stephen Ministers learn and practice the skill of reflecting as a valuable listening tool. They explore the many facets of listening and talk about their own experiences so as to better understand when listening is effective and when it feels fake or makes a person feel uncomfortable. Announcing A New Logo The Prayer Ministry of Asbury has a new logo! Our logo will be used under the name of Asbury UMC. We are in keeping with our church s mission, which we will do through Prayer. Also, our logo will give our ministry a stronger and clearer presence as we mobilize people, organize special events, lead meetings and represent the church in community-wide prayer efforts. Finally, it is with love, gratitude and appreciation to Ms. Grace Hines for designing our beautiful Prayer Ministry logo. Thank you so much! Prayer Ministry Team Pastor Appreciation Sunday is October 8. Refreshments will be served in Fellowship Hall after both services. 7

Save the date October 22 Sunday, November 5 Honoring and remembering those who have passed. Sunday, November 12 Consecration Sunday is based on the biblical philosophy of the need of the giver to give for his or her own spiritual development, rather than on the need of the church to receive. 9
