LITURGY Dear Family of Saint Matthew, Imagine our diocese with all of its parishes and communities, as if it were a giant oil supertanker out on the ocean. In order for a VLCC to change direction, the captain must take steps long before the desired outcome. Thus, Bishop Peter is the captain and making decisions to change the culture of our diocese, knowing that the desired outcome is in the future. The new heading which the captain wants for his ship is sacramental living as the operative (not just theoretical) culture for the diocese and all its structures. Many Catholics already embrace this kind of living, even though they might not have the verbal acuity to actually express it. Dean Koontz, a famous novelist, was asked: What's your favorite thing about being a Catholic? His response gives insight into what sacramental living is like: Being a Catholic gives me a sense that the world has shape and form and function and meaning. I...don't wander aimlessly seeking for some meaning in things. I have a sense of what those meanings are. It opened my eyes to a deeper, more complex world; that leaves you a lifetime of exploring to follow.... I wrote a book called "From the Corner of His Eye," and it takes on the subject of how meaningful every single act that we do in life is, and how everything we do reverberates through the lives of others in ways we will never see, and why one good act can reverberate again and again through life--through different lives. One small, good act can reverberate and grow through different lives and inspire something good in someone else that keeps growing until a great goodness comes out of it at the far end, just as an evil act can inspire evil acts that are greater than the initial one because they grow as they occur through lives. Sacramental living is a journey of sacred meaning: How everything we do reverberates through the lives of others in ways we will never see. When compared to a life of bleak consumption (whether it be of people, things or experiences), sacramental living is a shining path that offers a depth of wellbeing that the word grace only begins to describe. -Father Brian Kennedy The Lord is king; let the earth rejoice, let the many islands be glad. Gospel For All Ages "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." Oh, to be on that mountain! What a priceless experience for Peter, James, and John. If they had ever doubted, if they wondered whether Jesus was really who he said he was, their confidence surely got a boost on the day of the Transfiguration. Before their very eyes, Jesus' divine beauty radiated gloriously while the two ancient prophets also appeared in miraculous manner. And to top it off, the voice of God the Father spoke from the heavens and confirmed that it was all true: Jesus really is the Son of God! Why did Jesus reveal himself in such a remarkable way to these men? Perhaps we have an answer in today's epistle. Peter writes, "We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven while we were with him on the holy mountain." Peter mentions this fact in order to confirm his credibility as a preacher as he goes on to say, "We possess the prophetic message that is altogether reliable. You will do well to be attentive to it." Because of the mission that Peter had to help shape and nurture the Church in its earliest days, his position as an "eyewitness" to the Transfiguration helped to gain the attention, and the faith, of his hearers. So although we were not there during this holy apparition, we have the benefit of it. We, and the faithful through the ages, have heard the testimony that Jesus is truly our God from those who saw in person that it was for real. In this way, the Transfiguration is able to bolster the faith of many, not just the three men who were there that day. May we have the grace to allow the feast we celebrate today to truly deepen our faith. Please consider sharing the gift of your faith with our religious education students this fall! We need you!
