From the Desk of the Pastor, Fr. Shawn Gould Mercy in the Resurrection We celebrate two important feasts this weekend. First, this Sunday is the Octave Day of Easter. It is (almost) like Easter Sunday all over again. The power and the glory of the Lord s Resurrection are too much for just one day it spills out into a full week of days, plus an additional day. The new, human life for which we are destined and being prepared in the Church is already a present reality in Jesus and in His (and our) Blessed Mother. Second, we celebrate today the Divine Mercy. God is goodness and truth and justice, through and through. Without God also being mercy, we could never face Him, let alone live with Him forever. Jesus Christ, in His willing sacrifice for us, reveals that God is, in fact, mercy. God is not just merciful (though He is that, too). He is mercy. Mercy, for we who wish to be disciples of Christ and enter into heavenly life with Him, means much more than not feeling judged and shamed. Not feeling judged and shamed is the ultimate result of real mercy, but it is not the beginning of it. There is some judgment at the beginning we judge ourselves as we know God in His justice judges us. Mercy is first of all about a chance to change so that harsh judgment need not apply any longer. God s mercy to us means that He does not take us as we are, fallen and broken, addicted more or less to our petty evils. He sees in us the potential (that He created in us) for glory and greatness and goodness. And so He extends His mercy to us. That mercy sheds light on our lives, so that we can see how much better a life lived according to God s commandments would be. This mercy also moves us to seek the Lord s help to effect this change in us for we are very much unable to make such a change on our own. The Resurrection reveals God s merciful intention for us: a new, yet perfectly human life, lived with the risen Lord for ever. 2 Second Sunday of Easter/Sunday of Divine Mercy April 23, 2017

What It Means to be a Knight of Columbus I ve written other articles about what it means to be a Knight of Columbus. I ve written of our charity, support for St. Bede School, family activities, patriotic activities, etc., but these past few weeks have highlighted, for me, our most important activity prayer. I could talk of our May Crowning, support for the Public Rosary, Divine Mercy veneration, and, coming soon, our Corpus Christi adoration. Our prayers are more personal for me. Technically, I am a cancer survivor, but my survival path was a walk in the park. If there were a cancer slot machine, I hit the jackpot. My bladder cancer was resolved in a single, outpatient surgery. I was blessed by the prayers of my Brother Knights as have so many others. For every tragedy, there is a set Public Relations statement Our prayers go out to the families and victims of the tragedy (Fill in the blank.) Whose prayers? When I didn t pray all that much, I told some people, I ll say a prayer for your father, mother, son, daughter, friend, etc. because that was what I thought they wanted to hear. The Knights taught me how to pray and the power of prayer. I learned that it s ok to pray in public. There is no more moving sight than a room full of men praying in unison. When a Knight tells you, I ll say a prayer for you, you can look into his eyes and see his truthfulness. I was not lucky I was blest. I may have another pull at the cancer slot machine, but, this time, my Brother Knights prayers were all the luck I needed. It may not be our greatest membership appeal, but, Men of St. Bede, please join us in prayer. We pray for you, your family, and the St. Bede Community. Long after I have passed, Brother Knights will continue to pray for me as I have prayed for our fallen brethren. This is what it means to be a Knight and it blesses both you and those we pray for. Again, come join us in prayer. John L. Szajna Grand Knight St. Bede Pius X Knights of Columbus Council #3788 Mary, Queen of the Knights, Bless our Council and our Good Works Men s Scripture Group Inviting all men to join Deacon Larry and our St. Bede Tuesday Morning Scripture Group. We begin, first, at the 8:15 AM Mass and then proceed to Panera Bread on Rollins Road in Round Lake Beach where we have a reserved area for us to gather at 9:00 AM. Share a meal and the Word of the Lord! No reservations are necessary, just come and join us. It s a great way to begin the day! A Family Perspective Second Sunday of Easter/Divine Mercy Whose sins you forgive, are forgiven means the grudges we carry only make us miserable. The Kingdom of God begins in your home where children learn the paths to peace promised in today s gospel through merciful and forgiving demonstrations by their parents. by Bud Ozar 10 Second Sunday of Easter/Sunday of Divine Mercy April 23, 2017

Visit the Church Library For your own private spiritual pilgrimage to the Holy Land, read What Jesus Saw from the Cross (in the Jesus section). These pages will intensify your love of Jesus by burning the events of His Passion into your memory and imagination. Written by a priest who lived in Jerusalem and spent many a day walking and praying in the streets where Jesus walked and prayed, this devotional classic gives you details not included in the Gospels. The library is located in Coleman Hall. To sign out a book, just put your name, date (month/ day/year) and phone number on the card (located on the book s inside cover) and put the card in the Signed Out Books holder. When returning the book, put it on the shelf marked Returns and we ll replace it in the library. The Legion of Mary has come to St. Bede Parish The Legion of Mary is now established in Ingleside through St. Bede Parish. We meet on Thursdays from 7:00-8:30 PM in the Faith Formation Center Conference Room. We meet weekly for prayer, study and sharing of work done for the extension of the Gospel to others. Legion of Mary members are living out their Apostolic Mission called for by their Baptism and Confirmation with ministry work that focuses on the Spiritual Works of Mercy. The Goals of the Legion of Mary Apostolate are Self-Sanctification and the Glory of God through bringing others to Mary s Son, Jesus Christ. Questions concerning this ministry may be directed to Carol Stitt, a member of St. Joseph Parish, Round Lake, at 847-231-2413. Feel free to also visit a Legion of Mary meeting at St. Joseph, Round Lake, each Friday at 9 AM in the Rectory. We meet after the 8 AM morning Mass. St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry Parishioners! If you know of any individual, family or friend who is in need of food, please have them contact the St. Bede Society of St. Vincent de Paul at 224-360- 2562. All information is kept confidential.
