Course/Module description: 'Child' and 'children' are new terms, which express new concepts developed in the modern age. The course discusses the history of children's theatre, since its inception in the beginning of the twentieth century, and focuses on the changes in artistic methods both in repertoire and in the performative practice relevant to the child audience. The discussion refers to the primary elements of children's theatre language, the specific character of the young audience and its expectations, the existing clichיs in this field, and the essential difference between children's theater and television and movies for children. In addition, the course will acquaint the students with central figures in children's theatre in Israel and the world. Course/Module aims: Studying the unique characteristics of children's theater and the emotional expectations of the child audience regarding repertoire, acting, and the emotional ambience of the play. Learning the methods of analysis and discussion in children's theatre. Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: On successful completion of this module, students will be able to understand the historical processes and humanist concepts that brought about the appearance of children's theatre; they will recognize the uniqueness of children's theater and its importance in modern society; they'll be able to distinguish among the various methods used in children's theatre. Attendance requirements(%): 80% Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Frontal lectures and class discussions; watching plays and recorded segments and discussing them; practical experience in presenting short segments. Course/Module Content: 1. Child-figures as cultural heroes in the 20th century: Peter Pan, Alice, Pinocchio. 2. Repertoire for child audience. 3. Reality as presented in children's theatre. 4. Acting the child-figure: the artistic means and language of children's theatre. 5. Children's theatre compared to page 2 / 5
