Grand Knights Report Hello and welcome to 2016! Happy New Year! I m pleased with the year we just finished and excited about the 12 months ahead. Fresh off the Christmas gift buying-season, I want to tell you about an experience I had when Angela and I were shopping at Costco last week. We rounded a corner pushing our cart and there was a gentleman just hanging up from a phone call with a smile as wide as Lake Erie on his face. His glee was obvious and a little contagious. He looked at me and I said It looks like you are having a Merry Christmas. He said he was and that he d like to tell me about his son, whom he described as the perfect son. Intrigued, and wanting to draw as much out of him as possible, I said He sounds great. Does he drink? No. Does he smoke? No. Does he ever come home late, curse, make fun of other people? No, no, and no. I said, Wow, you really do have a great son! Was that him you were just talking to on the phone? No, he said, he ll only be a year old the day after Christmas! I wished him a Merry Christmas and finished my shopping realizing what a great thing a baby and a groaner joke is. As we move from 2015 to 2016 and the old man of 2015 gives way to the baby of 2016, I think back on our accomplishments of this year. We have accomplished some amazing things, from support of our parish youth groups and leveling off a negative membership trend, to addressing some pressing maintenance issues at the hall and selling football tickets for needed operating expenses. Okay, the football ticket drive was not the success we hoped for, but we did sell some! As much as I like to look back on past successes, I get more excited about coming opportunities. The first big opportunity to make an impact in service for the coming year is to come to the free-throw competition at OLPH on Sunday January 24 at noon. There are many great things to come this year. What successes will we look back on at the end of 2016? Fraternally yours Doug Jones March for Life The annual March for Life will again take place starting at Maumee St. Joseph s Parish at 2:00PM on Sunday, January 17. The event will begin with a brief benediction at the church followed by the march which will begin at the church and proceed to the parish cemetery near Side Cut Park about one mile away. A short prayer service will be held at the monument to the unborn in the center of the cemetery. For those who wish to go to the cemetery, but unable to walk, a bus will be available. In addition, prayers will take place at the church while others walk. The event will culminate with light refreshments at the parish afterwards.
Field Agent s Report for January 2015 We Stand Strong On Ethical Ground Some people believe that ethics in business is a contradiction in terms. They think that in order to be profitable, a company and its leaders must abandon morality and embrace the dark, greedy side that they see so often in the news and in movies. At the Knights of Columbus, we know this isn t true. A business can be both ethical and successful. We are. As a Catholic organization, we understand the value and importance of our core beliefs and the original mission of Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney. In fact, much of the strength and financial security we provide to members and their families can be attributed to our ethical, moral standards. More than 96 percent of Knights who buy our life insurance keep it, year in and year out. The Order takes this commitment to our members very seriously. This means carefully planning when it comes time to invest. Our professional staff researches all transactions to insure that they fall in line with Catholic values. If a transaction makes them uncomfortable, they don t make it. We exclude any company engaged in activity that conflicts with Catholic moral teaching: companies directly involved in abortion, contraception, human cloning, embryonic stem cell research, for-profit health care that pays for any of these, or pornography, said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. There are many companies in the pharmaceutical and communications industries that would undoubtedly provide excellent returns for us, but which are not in our portfolio because they engage in research and development or programming in ways that violate the sanctity or dignity of human life. In the end, the Knights of Columbus investment strategy is motivated by morality, not money. Yet, each year we remain profitable, increase our assets and stay dedicated to this vision that will keep the Order financially sound for generations to come. But don t just take our word for it. In 2014, the Knights of Columbus was named a World s Most Ethical Company by the Ethisphere Institute. We were one of only two life insurance companies to earn the honor. Faithful Catholics have choices when buying life insurance, said the Supreme Knight. But they know that at the Knights of Columbus their policy is supplied by an insurer that shares their moral and ethical values and is guided in all of its investment and sales practices by those values. Gary Christie Field Agent K of C 419-250-6310 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship On Sunday, January 24, 2016; St. Jude/South Toledo Council will be holding the council level competition of the Knights of Columbus Youth Free Throw Championship at Our Lady of Perpetual Help gymnasium. The doors should be open at noon with shooting to start at 12:30PM. This is one of the more exciting events we hold throughout the year. I m not sure who has more fun, the Knights or the kids! Certificates are given to each participant, while winners receive a plaque. The winners move on to district level competition. District winners move on to a regional competition and regional winners compete in Columbus at the state level. Last year the Toledo Diocese had two youngsters who were international winners!
Facebook When you get a minute, check out Knights of Columbus St. Jude Council on Facebook. Grand Knight Doug Jones spent a few minutes setting this up this afternoon. We now have an electronic forum to get the word out about our activities and reach the young men out there. It has a strong filter set to block out profanity so we won't have to worry about people posting bad messages. Be sure to send a friend request and like the page when you are there. For those of you who have never been on Facebook, He will show you the page the next time you are together, but be sure to tell people about it, especially sons and grandchildren. We can discuss things that need to be posted on the page at appropriate times in the future. The address is https://www.facebook.com/southtoledoknights?fref=ts.
