As Boca Raton Synagogue is an environment where all of its members and visitors need to feel valued and welcomed, members are required to comport themselves in a manner which reflects mutual respect and a sense of inclusiveness. In our Synagogue, we value debate about pressing issues. This is consistent with the American democratic tradition. Our sages saw the value of arguments conducted L Shem Shamayim, for the sake of heaven, believing that great minds who engage in respectful debate will arrive at better solutions. They valued and welcomed alternate views, as do we. Derech Eretz, good and proper conduct, and mutually respectful dialogue are core values of the Synagogue community. These create a safe place for inspiration and spiritual growth, the central purpose of the Synagogue. It is a violation of Jewish law and ethics to use harsh language (vitriol) to demonize or to marginalize people with whom one may disagree. Uncivil expression reflects negatively on our Synagogue as well as on the individuals who engage in such behavior. Boca Raton Synagogue expects its members to act and to speak with kindness and sensitivity to others. It is only in this fashion that a strong, vibrant, and harmonious community can be created and maintained. Adherence to this policy is a requirement for membership in good standing at the Boca Raton Synagogue. ISRAEL UPDATE SOCIAL ACTION The United Nations Development Assistance Framework and the Palestinian Authority have signed a strategic programming framework for 2018-2022, providing over $1billion to support Palestine s path to independence and other pillars of the government s National Policy Agenda, according to a report by the NGO Monitor posted to the organization s website. The Framework document provides significant insight into the machinery (and machinations) of UN development programs and the politicization of development and humanitarian aid, says NGO Monitor official Naftali Balanson. According to Strategic Priority 1: Supporting Palestine s path to Independence, and repeating the standard claims beginning with the infamous 2001 Durban NGO Forum declaration, Human rights mechanisms are increasingly engaged to hold Israel accountable for its obligations under international law. Building on this foundation The UN will increase its support for Palestinian institutions (state and non-government) to help them effectively access international accountability mechanisms in order to hold Israel accountable for its violations under international law. This includes bolstering efforts for Palestinian civil society representatives to submit written information to the human rights treaty bodies and actively monitor, advocate and mobilize on human rights violations. No parallel support for monitoring, advocating and mobilizing in response to Palestinian violations under the human rights treaties the Palestinian Authority has signed exists. It became life threatening until Hashem intervened. He opened up Hagar s eyes to see a nearby well from which to provide water for herself and her son Yishmael. In revealing the well to Hagar, a malakh Hashem tells Hagar, כי שמע ה' אל קול הנער באשר הוא שם that Hashem has heard the cries of the boy, from where he is. Commenting on the last phrase, Rashi explains that Yishmael was judged as of now meaning according to his current situation. Hazal tell us that the malakhim argued that Hashem should not save Yishmael because Yishmael s descendants would eventually cause great harm to Bnei Yisrael. Hashem responded that right now Yishmael is considered righteous and indeed while his descendants will torture the Jewish people, Yishmael is being judged as he is now and not based on his future descendants. Rav Eliyahu Mizrahi wonders how Yishmael was considered righteous. The Torah just described him as מצחק referring to one [or more] of the three cardinal sins (idolatry, adultery, and murder) which was why he was being thrown out. Why was his considered righteous? מדת) Maharal explains that Hashem often employs his attribute of mercy even with those who are wicked. How and why that works are (הרחמים beyond human comprehension. Understanding this was Moshe Rabbenu s request from Hashem that was denied. The malakhim therefore did not ask about how Hashem would judge Yishmael for his own iniquities logic doesn t apply to those decisions. Their argument was only about the future generations, for which they argued fairness and logic should apply. Hashem responded that He has His way of running the world, which He guarantees is fair, but need not be understandable to the human mind or comply with the human conception of fairness. Page 8
