This is one night before our usual 4th Tuesday of the month meeting. This will allow 2 dozen of our members to join over 400 Knights across the state to attend the 6am Wednesday Archbishop (Carlson) Breakfast with Knights of Columbus Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson. The event will be held at Westport in St Louis. The time and location for our Monday night meeting will remain the same (7pm Rosary in Little Church, 7:30pm Council meeting in Parish Hall). We will also conduct our annual officer elections during the Council meeting. There will be no guest speaker this month. We look forward to seeing all Knights at our May Council meeting! The 110th Missouri Knights of Columbus State Convention was held April 29-May 1 in Jefferson City. Ascension Council was well represented with 5 Knights who serve at the Council and/or State level. Congratulations to John & Faith Gouveia and Family who were recognized as the State Family of the Year during the Saturday night Banquet and awards presentation. This is one of the three major awards presented and is a highlight of the evening's activities. Complete information and reports from the State Convention will be provided at our May Council meeting. My personal thanks goes to all those who helped with the many Easter, Church, and Council events that were held in April. May will also be a very active month as we distributed Mothers' Day gifts at all Masses (May 7-8), the final Felice Cuores event (May 14) until September, Parish Breakfast (May 15), our 10th annual Golf Tournament (May 16), our first-ever Bingo night (May 21), the Squires hosting a Squires Parish Dance open to all in the MPR (May 27), and 5th Sunday Mass & Breakfast on May 29. There are still openings for all these events. All are welcomed! Please consider joining us for our final Council event of the 2010-2011 fraternal year - our Annual Installation of Officers Mass & Banquet. This year's event will be held Tuesday evening, June 28. Information and invitations have just been mailed to all Council members. I look forward to all Knights, Ladies Auxiliary members, and their spouses, joining us as we give "thanks for a job well done in keeping up the good Lord's work" and celebrate the conclusion of another great year. Happy Anniversary to our Ascension Council #11139 as we celebrate our 18th Anniversary on June 1! Thanks again for all that you do!. Joe Joe Burleski, Grand Knight Community Director - Kevin Hennessey Felice Cuores - The final dance of the season was held on May 14, featuring a patriotic red, white and blue theme. This dance was the 71st event since inception, finishing our eighth year. Ascension volunteers from the Council and Auxiliary averaged eight helpers per dance. This is a wonderful showing of support for this great ministry. Thank you all for a successful year. See you in September. Bill Lukas Special Olympics - On April 30, 2011, the Knights of Columbus participated in the annual Special Olympics 36th Annual St. Louis Metro Area Spring Games held at Rockwood Summit High School. It was a great day for this event although a little windy. We had a total of twelve knights help with this worthy cause. Six of the knights volunteered as buddies and spent the day with their own Special Olympic participant helping them to all their events and award ceremonies. The other six Knights manned rakes and tape measures to help run the standing long jump event. All in all, it was a very rewarding day for all of us and we look forward to helping again next year. Membership Director Mel Trotier Recruiting new members is so essential to the continued growth and well-being of both our Council and the Order. Offering a man membership in the Knights of Columbus gives him the opportunity to improve his own life in a Catholic community, as well as deepen his position in our Parish and in our community as a whole. Membership allows him to experience the fraternal bond that the Knights share while obeying the Lord's command to Charity and Service. Recall the scripture "not by his words, but by his deeds will you know him." Give this opportunity to other men in our Parish Community; offer what the Knights can provide. Ask a Parishioner to join, help him and our Council! Just Ask! For membership, degree, or, event information, please contact Mel Trotier, Membership Director, 636-530-1496, membership@ascensionkofc.org 4 th Degree and Honor Guard Jack Giebe The St. Louis Assembly Fourth Degree Knights will cook and serve Hamburgers to our returning Heroes and Veterans at a Welcome Home Vets Celebration at Soldiers Memorial on May 21st. Columbian Squires John Gouveia The Knight Times, May 2011, Page 4 of 5 The Squires enjoyed a very special event at Kenrick Glennon Seminary hosted by Deacon Henry Purcell. The event included: a complete historic tour of the seminary building, an enjoyable hike up to the tower, viewing of the homemade dueling Seminarian video, a chapel visit with prayers and a very good close up of the magnificent chapel organ. They also enjoyed some treats in the seminary cafeteria too. The Squires wish to thank Deacon Henry for all the support he has given the Squires Circle 4893 and wish him well on his ordination this May. We will miss him very much. Why Fathers Count There is a category in social science called father absence. The absence of a father is known to researchers to be a significant factor in the success or failure of children. The fact is, fathers make a huge and irreplaceable difference in the lives of their children in terms of education, income, abuse, mental and physical health, drug use, sexual activity, pregnancy, and almost every other social indicator. Fatherless children are twice as likely to drop out of school. Father involvement in schools is associated with the higher likelihood of a student getting mostly A's. This was true for fathers in biological parent families, for stepfathers, and for fathers heading single-parent families. Half of all children with highly involved fathers in twoparent families reported getting mostly A s through 12th grade, compared to 35.2 percent of children of nonresident father families. Even after controlling for income, youths in father-absent households still had significantly higher odds of incarceration than those in mother-father families. Youths who never had a father in the household experienced the highest odds. Adolescents, particularly boys, in single-parent families were at higher risk of status, property, and person delinquencies. Moreover, students attending schools with a high proportion of children of single parents are also at risk. Teens without fathers were twice as likely to be involved in early sexual activity and seven times more likely to get pregnant as an adolescent Circle 4893 was very lucky to send one of their Squires (Wilson Hayward) to the Knights State Convention this month to speak at a workshop about the Squires program. The workshop was well attended and many seemed interested in the workings and makings of a Circle. On Friday, May 27th the Squires plan to hold a Squires Dance in the MPR room at Ascension from 6:30 to 10:30 pm. The dance will be advertised in the Parish Bulletin for the next few weeks. They plan on using a portion of the proceeds to support a local seminarian and to provide a scholarship to other new Missouri Squires Circles so that they will be able to attend this years State Convention at Trout Lodge. The Squires are gearing up to get ready for their annual State Convention at Trout Lodge this June 10-12th with the anticipation to meet the many newly formed Circles. There are several Squires that still are having difficulty with their Squire of the Body of Christ service projects to benefit a parish or other Catholic Institution in the Archdiocese. If you think you can help them, feel free to contact me with your ideas and/or assistance. Officer Bios Meet the Youth Director Rick Dolan is a native of the St. Louis area where he graduated from Chaminade High School. Rick went on to Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri where he majored in Business Industrial Communications. Rick, his wife Treasa, and children Ricky (15) and Katie (12) moved to Ascension Parish in 2003 after living in Brentwood. My involvement with the Knights of Columbus started in 2009 after traveling the country for many years as a factory sales representative in the promotional products industry. It was in 2008 that I joined our family residential real estate business and was able to devout more time to our parish. Rick and Treasa Dolan I started as Youth Director last year with the help and support of my friend Steve Martinez. I have always enjoyed sports and coaching my children, so the Youth Director position was the perfect fit. The Knights of Columbus have been able to provide me with a number of fantastic role models. It is great to see men of all different backgrounds and ages come together to support their faith in God and service our local community. Our family has been blessed by the support of the many Brother Knights (friends) and look forward to developing more relationships during the upcoming years. This evening will be highlighted with the presentation of the Knights of Columbus Ascension Council's annual awards, including the most prestigious "Joe Gegg Service Award." Our dinner will again feature the fine food from Russo's Gourmet Catering Service. Due the tremendous growth of this event in recent years we are asking for a $12.50 contribution per person to help offset some of the costs incurred. Please RSVP to me no later than Saturday, June 18 th You can contact me with your intentions at my email addressburleski@sbcglobal.net or phone 636-284-8258 (cell).
