St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 From the Pastor The parishioners of St. Francis extend our sympathy and condolences to the family of Mr. Joseph Ruholl, whose funeral was this week in St. Francis Church. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord. We join the couples, who are married 50 years and longer, in giving thanks to the Lord for the bounteous blessings they have enjoyed over these many years. We honor them at all the Masses this weekend. I remind you to spend a few extra minutes this weekend and take a tour, that is offered after all the Masses, of the south end of our building, the part that houses the museum dining room and kitchen, meeting room, office, music room and offices for religious education. Our committee for long range planning is developing some ideas for this section of the building. It helps to visualize what people are talking about. Great news! The training session for Protecting God s Children had to be moved to a larger area because of the large number of attendees!! Thank you for your cooperation. Others, not in compliance, please continue praying over your decision. The listening session with Bishop Paprocki is Sunday afternoon, 24 Sept, at 2:00 p.m. in St. Anthony High School in Effingham. This is regarding the 4 th Diocesan Synod and its statutes. Looking down range we have our party for the Feast of St. Francis to be held after the 4:30 Mass Saturday, 30 September. Come to the Grade School Hall for dinner and fun and celebrate the feast of the patron of our parish, St. Francis. Also as part of the celebration of the feast of St. Francis we will again have the blessing of the animals, and that will take place next Sunday, 1 October, at 1:00 p.m. in the grass area east of the church. Please use your judgment in terms of bringing the family pet rhino or hippo for the blessing!! Soon we will be in the month of October, and in this diocese during October each year every parish takes a count of the people attending each of the weekend Masses. Numbers are sent into the diocese. Emergency Collection for Victims of Hurricane Irma In the past week, Hurricane Irma devastated significant parts of the Caribbean and the southeastern United States. Cardinal DiNardo, President of the USCCB has announced that an emergency collection to assist the victims of Hurricane Irma be taken up. This emergency collection is greatly needed to help victims of Hurricane Irma rebuild their lives and also help support reconstruction needs of churches destroyed or severely damaged in the U.S. and Caribbean. Our parish will have a special collection the weekend of September 30/October 1. Please put your donation in an envelope marked Hurricane Harvey relief with your envelope number. The loose collection that weekend will also be sent to aid the Hurricane Irma victims. In addition to asking for donations, prayers will be appreciated for all those suffering from the impact of Hurricane Harvey and Irma. Transitus of St. Francis On Wednesday, October 4th, we celebrate the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of our parish. He is honored for his tremendous love of God, his imitation of Jesus and his care for the poor, especially those with the disease of leprosy. For centuries Franciscans (priests, brothers, sisters and Secular Franciscans) have gathered on the evening before his feast to celebrate his death, that is, his transitus (passing) from life on earth to eternal life. This year the Transitus will be held at St. Francis Church on Tuesday evening, October 3rd, beginning at 7:00 pm. You are invited to join us for this commemoration of St. Francis death and then come to the friary for refreshments. 40 Day Prayer Campaign for Life: Our parish will soon be participating in this locally organized prayer and action effort from Sept. 27 to Nov. 5. We will be joining people of faith across our nation to pray and fast for an end to abortion, for the closing of abortion centers and for restored respect for human life. St Francis Church will host Eucharistic Days of Prayer on Oct 13 and Oct 25. We will also be asking for Acts of Mercy in giving of time in helping moms, dads, and babies by sorting clothes or cleaning items at the Silk Purse thrift store, which serves Family Life Center clients. More details soon! Feast of St. Francis Saturday, September 30, there will be a Parish Social following 4:30 Mass. A Fall meal will be served in the Grade School auditorium followed by a card party and games. There will be a basket raffle with proceeds going towards Assisi To Africa. It encourages agricultural development as the principal way out of poverty in the future. Now that we have abundant seed and tools (from KCC), we can send our team to the village and prepare, by hand, the fields for sowing. Our dry season will end around the end of September and we have to be ready for the planting. KCC also has a trained agronomist who will follow all of our activities in order that we might succeed. This will help us enormously to feed our 75 children residents. Let us pray for the success of those helping the children in these farming efforts! Come and See The Franciscan Way of Life This is an opportunity to live, pray and talk with friars about our way of life and how each of them find it life giving. The next Come and See opportunity is October 13-15 at St. Peter Church in Chicago. For more information contact the vocation office at 312-853-2384, or email us at yes@befranciscan.com.
