St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 From The Pastor Dear Parishioners, We thank the Lord for the good weather, although a little warm, for our picnic. At least we were not rained out. I wish to thank all the parishioners who gave a helping hand in running our various booths, especially our young men and women. Also thanks to all the parishioners who donated items for our raffles, the children s raffle as well as the major raffle. I am sorry if you did not win anything, but neither did I, except a couple of cakes. I could not pull out my own name or any of the friars. Congratulations to all of our winners. Thank you to all of you who gave from your treasures. I especially enjoyed seeing the children having a great time and I know they got their monies from mom and dad. Thanks to all who worked so hard behind the scenes, the set-up people, and those who cleaned up after it was all over. To all who served the delicious meal, your labor was deeply appreciated. To the staff who worked timelessly to make sure everything went according to the plans, thanks. I owe a special debt of gratitude to the officers and their spouses of the Ladies Sodality and the Holy Name men. I know and saw how hard you worked. To anyone I missed, I say thank you so much. The picnic was once again a grand success. May the Lord bless you a hundred-fold with good health and happiness. ********** Recently, I celebrated my birthday. You were all so kind, and I thank you for the many cards, best wishes, gifts and thoughtfulness to take time to wish me the best. God has been very good to me, and I am most grateful to the Lord and you, the parishioners of St. Francis. Please continue to remember me in your prayers. May the Lord bless you many times over as only He can reward you! God bless you and your families. Peace, Love, Joy Fr. Austin Have You Noticed the new parking lot on the East side of church? This new lot gives us 18 additional parking spaces of which 16 of these spaces are intended for those with minimal disabilities, senior citizens and those who have trouble walking. Two spaces will be marked handicapped. So please be considerate; if you are healthy and have no trouble walking, park elsewhere. Thanks for your cooperation. Meditation for Sunday, July 17th The Spirit helps us in our weakness. (Romans 8:26) Have you ever noticed how ready we are to take up one form of prayer petition and how uncomfortable we tend to feel about other forms, especially the kind of prayer mentioned in today s second reading? We tend to be very good at asking God for his help or healing, for an end to war and abortion, or for grace and protection for family members. There seems to be no end to our needs, and no lack of confidence that God will hear and answer us. Of course, this is a very good way to pray, and God loves to pour out his blessings in response to our petitions. But there is another form of prayer that is just as valuable and just as necessary to our spiritual lives: the prayer that listens for God s wisdom and revelation. In today s Gospel, Jesus uses parables and analogies to teach the crowd how to understand the kingdom of God. And behind every parable and story Jesus told was his desire to announce what has lain hidden from the foundation of the world (Matthew 13:35). Jesus isn t done unveiling mysteries to his people. Through his Holy Spirit, he wants to unfold the truths of the gospel to each one of us, just as he has done for countless believers throughout the centuries. He wants to help us understand the things of God so that we can take hold of his kingdom more fully each day and bear fruit in this world. At Mass today, let the Holy Spirit come to the aid of your spiritual weakness. As you listen to the Scripture readings, ask the Spirit to show you God's kingdom in a new way. During communion, tell him that you re ready to listen to whatever he puts on your heart. Then, watch and see how the Spirit works. Come, Holy Spirit, and guide my prayer. You know the mind of God. You know the deepest desires of his heart. By your grace, open my eyes to these mysteries. Help me see Jesus more clearly. The Word Among Us

St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 4 Q. I was recently asked to be my niece's godmother, and I am wondering if the responsibilities of godparents have changed since I was a child? A. The Rite of Baptism for Children was promulgated in 1969. One of the purposes of the new rite was to express more clearly the role and responsibilities of the parents and godparents. The emphasis is on the role of parents as the primary educators in faith of their children. By their example, they will teach their children about God, about loving their neighbor, practicing the mysteries of the church and growing in their faith. Godparents are charged with helping the parents in their duties. Perhaps they best achieve this by being examples of faith, showing their godchild by word and deed what it means to be a practicing Catholic. As the child grows older, this is especially important; and your attendance/participation at first penance and first Communion, confirmation and other church related activities makes a big impression. The rite has changed, but the responsibility of the godparents has essentially remained the same. In short, you are to support the parents, give good example and be a model of faith for the young soul entrusted to your care. 2009 Liturgical Publications Inc Angel Food Ministries The July menu is on the round table at the rectory/parish office entrance. Last date to order is July 22nd. It s Fair Time Again Springfield Right to Life needs volunteers for the Right to Life State Fair Booth from Friday, August 12 through Sunday, August 21. Over two thousand men, women and children of all ages visit our booth to pick up literature, sign a pro-life petition and show their support for life. The scheduling is for three hour shifts starting at 9:00 am with the last shift ending at 9:00 pm. We need four volunteers per shift. Being a volunteer at our booth is an opportunity to be a witness for the unborn. It is a very positive experience and our presence does make a difference. A single woman who was pregnant and was being pressured by her family to have an abortion, came into our booth, picked up some literature and the next day sought support from a pro-life pregnancy center to keep her baby. Please help us. Older children and teens are welcome to come and make a difference too. Call Andrea Judd 544-1300 or Retta @ the Right to Life Office 523-2700 for more information. Information about the Dominican Sisters of Springfield and Their Missions in Peru, S. A. In 1873, six Kentucky, Dominican Sisters were sent to Jacksonville, Illinois to teach the children of Irish immigrants. In two years, these Sisters became an independent congregation. By 1893, the rapid growth of the new community led to a move to Springfield, Illinois. They have been committed to following the spirit of St. Dominic Guzman who established the Order of Preachers in southern France in 1206, to preach and to teach. At present, besides their educational, healthcare and pastoral ministries, they have become involved in a wide spectrum of ministries to meet new and changing needs. These include literacy programs, prison ministry, marriage tribunal, parish life coordinators, pastoral associates, liturgists, counselors and as advocates for the poor and marginalized, especially women and children, and ongoing involvement in social justice issues. Through a flourishing associate program, many lay people share in the sisters ministry of preaching God s truth and compassion. In response to the plea of Pope John XXIII asking that sisters help to meet the needs of the church in Latin America, the Dominican Sisters of Springfield, Illinois sent four sisters to La Oroya, Peru. They arrived in 1965. The Dominican Sisters now have a House of Formation for girls who are called to join the community. There are nine final professed sisters whom we minister with in Peru. The Dominican Sisters of Springfield, Illinois have three houses in Peru. There is a House of Formation in Lima and two missions high in the Andes Mountains. One is La Oroya, a smeltering city that refines lead, zinc and copper. The other is Jarpa, a village of farmers and shepherds. These are their only mission areas outside the U.S. Sister Georgiana Stubner, who was born and raised in Chicago, will be here to give a mission appeal on July 30 & 31. She lived in La Oroya for 2½ years. She is now a pastoral associate at St. Mary and St. Mark Parish in Madison and Venice, Illinois. OOPS Forgot to put Maria Wargolet s address in last week s bulletin just in case you would like to send her a card. 16013 E 1600th Ave Effingham, IL 62401
