~~ Sunday, September 10, 2017 ~~ ~ Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Times ~ GOD S WATCHERS In the ancient world watchmen were extremely important people. They kept communities safe, and were there to alert them to any impending danger or attack. Before locks, alarms, and security systems, watchmen were the protectors, the safety measure. So when the Lord charges Ezekiel as a watchman today, it is a weighty charge. So weighty, we learn, that if Ezekiel fails to sound the alarm for those around him and they perish in a state of wickedness, Ezekiel will be held responsible! This profound connection between God s will on earth and in heaven is repeated in today s Gospel, where Jesus instructs us that we are to be the security force, the watchers placed on alert that nowhere in the Body of Christ, the church, will there be any two members of the one Body who are not reconciled. Scripture tells us that Jesus reconciled all things in heaven and on earth through the blood of his cross. But we are given the mission to continue that reconciliation on earth as in heaven through our ceaseless efforts to be, as Paul would write, ambassadors of reconciliation. Let us not get too comfortable thinking that we are responsible only for keeping our own lives from the path of wickedness and disagreement. We are also held accountable for the lives of the members of Christ s body around us. copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. ST. These followers of St. Dominic strive to grow in spirituality by showing their love and service to their parish family and the community at large. Through prayer and study they are able to grow in the ways of St Dominic., St. Thomas, and St. Catherine of Siena. If you have ever had questions about the Third Order of Lay Dominicans, the Las Vegas Chapter typically meets on the last Saturday of each month at 9:00 a.m. at the St. Thomas Aquinas Newman Center on the campus of UNLV. The Director of the UNLV Campus Ministry, Fr. Daniel Rolland, O.P., is their Spiritual Director. September 10, 2017 St. James the Apostle Church Page 5 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, The Diocese of Las Vegas annual second collection for Seminary and Clergy Education and Development takes place on the weekend of September 16 and 17. This collection supplements the ongoing education of our priests and the cost of medical care if they were to become ill, disabled or develop special needs. This collection also helps offset the cost of tuition, housing and the education of our seminarians. Our diocese is blessed to have priests who give so generously of their lives to the service of the Church and its people. They celebrate Mass on Sundays and during the week, hear confessions, anoint the sick, baptize, celebrate marriages, and pray for the dead. Our priests preach the Word of God from the pulpit and teach it in classroom settings. They also listen to their people s joys and sorrows and promote works of charity. We are also very blessed to have nine men studying for the priesthood at Mount Angel Seminary in Saint Benedict, Oregon and at the University of St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein, Illinois. Your continued support of this collection conveys your appreciation of our priests and seminarians. I ask that you keep them in your prayers. Assuring you of my continued prayers, I remain Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Joseph A. Pepe, D.D., J.C.D.
