LITURGICAL MINISTERS Attention Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Lectors, and Altar Servers: New ministry schedules are available for pick up in the sacristy. FEAST OF ST. CHARLES BORROMEO Sunday, November 6 th Join us as we celebrate the feast of our parish patron. Lower Parish Hall after the 7:30, 9:00 & 10:30 Masses Adults: $6.00 Children: $5.00 Tickets available at the door We are not too far from the holidays and all the excitement that goes with this special time of the year. As a parish, we have lots to do in preparation. From the presider s chair in our church sanctuary, I have the perfect vantage point to view the Rose Window in the west wall of our church, above the choir loft. The central figure is our parish patron, St Charles Borromeo; surrounding him are representations of the corporal works of mercy, taken from St Matthew s Gospel. They remind us of how we are to be judged at the end of time: Did we feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, care for the sick? The Lord says when we do that for others, we are serving Him. For a few days of the year, the evening sun passes by that window and it almost seems to come alive. As this Year of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis comes to an end, we have another opportunity to make the corporal works of mercy come alive : during November, we sponsor our Annual Canned Food Drive. Not only do we provide holiday meals, but we also provide food weekly throughout the year for those who have little. Because of your generosity, we can provide for Our Lady s Emergency Food Pantry at our East Side Cleveland twin parish, Our Lady of Peace, St Augustine on West 14 th, the West Side Catholic Center, and Parma Hunger Center. Please look over the November Canned Food Drive article in this bulletin. Leave your gifts of non-perishable foods (check the expiration dates) in the church lobbies anytime this month and also bring those items to our 9:30am Thanksgiving Day Mass on November 24. Many organizations, places of employment, Scouts, sport groups, etc. also sponsor Canned Food Drives at this time of year. If you belong to or know of such a group and they don t know where to donate their proceeds, St Charles would be happy to accept and then make sure those donations get to the right place and are then well-used. Don t forget the Pancake Breakfast in the Lower Parish Hall this Sunday morning, November 6, after the 7:30, 9:00, and 10:30am Masses. St Charles RENEW International Be My Witness Core Team members are reminded of our next meeting this Monday, November 7, at 7:00pm, in the Pope Francis Room (third floor) of the Parish Activities Center. Please bring your Be My Witness manual with you. This will be a joint meeting with our parish Evangelization Commission. Parish Council members are reminded of this month s meeting on Thursday, November 10, 7:45pm, Pope John Paul II Room, second floor of the PAC. Thanks to Carnival 2016, our junior high students are now working with 120 newly-purchased CHROMEBOOKS. Since they were purchased with parish funds, not state-aid funds, our teachers can also use them when instructing the students in our PCRF religious education program. Carnival 2017 dates? July 12, 13, 14, 15, 16! The Parma/Parma Heights Catholic Parishes will sponsor their Second Annual Thanksgiving Day Meal on Thursday, November 24, at St John Bosco Bell Tower Hall, 6480 Pearl Road, Parma Heights. Reservations are a must. Two seatings: 12Noon or 1:00pm. Please check the detailed article in this bulletin and share that information with others who might be interested.

The Mercy Shrine Article 1 of 2 Any parishioners who have traveled down Wilber Ave. in the past few months would have noticed some construction taking place. This construction, as indicated in Fr. Carlin s Pastor Column, is the site of a new shrine on the grounds of St. Charles, The Mercy Shrine. Inspired by the Year of Mercy and the World Youth Day Pilgrimage to Poland, this shrine intends to foster an encounter with Jesus and Mary who desire to be merciful to every member of the Church, and indeed the whole world. The main focus of the shrine is The Unity Cross. The design of this cross comes from a 1958 cross that was a gift from the newly ordained South American priests who studied in Germany with a Catholic based movement called, Schoenstatt which means, Beautiful Place. As indicated on the Schoenstatt website: The Unity Cross expresses [that] Christ is inseparable from Mary and Mary is inseparable from Christ. The Father symbol at the cusp of the cross illuminates everything: Christ and Mary rest in the Father, in the cross that the Father has determined in his plan of love, as the way of redemption. Moreover, Christ and Mary have a unique posture: they are alive and they are mutually looking at one another in a profound dialogue of Mother and Son. The blood that Mary gathers with the chalice emanates from Christ s side. The reason this cross was chosen for the shrine is precisely because of the blood of Christ that Mary gathers in the chalice. This blood is the source of mercy for all people and by being gathered into a chalice, we are reminded that we receive Christ s transforming mercy, here-and-now, through the sacraments of the Church. The next article, will point out several theological, spiritual and mystical meditations that have been written based upon this cross. These articles are meant to help you join in celebration as we end the Year of Mercy on Christ the King Sunday, November 20 th at the 12:00pm mass where we will bless the shrine. Hope to see you there!
