February 12, 2017-6th Sunday in Ordinary Time ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI CATHOLIC CHURCH

St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 From the Pastor Please read the insert in the bulletin this Sunday. Most of it deals with the seven themes of Catholic Social Teaching. You can find much more information by going to the website of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. I have typed some key concepts from these themes for us to pray over and reflect on. Thank you to the many parishioners, who have taken the time to come in and have your photo taken for our new parish pictorial directory. As you know, this practice occurs every 5 years. You have looked for someone in the directory, and you were disappointed to see they were missing NOT because they died, but they simply chose to not participate. If you really don t want to come in and smile, you can submit a photo. There is a charge for the book if you do this. Otherwise, you get a free 8 x 10 and a free book for posing and giving the company a shot at selling you photos. If you experience any pressure from the company to purchase pictures, please let me know. That is unsatisfactory. All of us would like to have 100% cooperation and participation. That is not likely for whatever the reason(s). But we can still hope for maximum participation, which will certainly help us to get to know each other better. How many times have you used your directory? People tell me they use their copy frequently, and I know I do. The more participation, the better the book. I know you will be glad you/your family is in it. Go to the parish website and book an appointment or call the office. There are only 2 more weeks of opportunities. I would like to see at least 800 families participating; that s out of roughly 1,200 families in the parish. I ve heard that there was a record number of hungry people at the Newman Breakfast last Sunday morning at the KC Hall. That s great it s a win-win deal. This Sunday is the breakfast at St. Rose of Lima in Montrose. Please come out and enjoy a delicious breakfast at Montrose. And I would certainly be remiss if I failed to mention the performance of Patent Shoes This coming weekend 17 and 18 - are dinner shows with tickets in advance required, while on Sunday, 19 th, tickets can be purchased at the door. It looks like a great show, and the Catholic Heart Work Camp people will benefit. Many thanks to the people making this comedy/musical possible. God has blessed our community with great talent and very generous people and organizations, like the banks! Teutopolis State Bank is funding this musical, and the Dieterich Bank significantly funded Taste of T-town. Prayers Needed: Assisi for Africa Father Damien has sadly relayed the tragedy that a 30 year old pedophile has abused several of the boys under his care. The man stayed near a school and soccer field, where three of the children fell into his trap, and many others outside Maison Kwetu were also victims. Father Damien writes, Thanks to two of our attentive children, we were able to get the man arrested and after his confrontation with the victims, he was put in prison to wait for his judgment Thanks be to God, we have a psychologist working with us and if need be we will be able to get psychiatric help He has been a great help during these trying weeks and we are giving a lot of attention to the victims. Please give special prayer for the emotional, physical, and spiritual healing for the victims, as well as the safety of all the children. Protecting God s Children training for adults of the parish involved in any parish ministry is being offered on Monday, March 27 at 6:30pm. St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 4 Religious Education And Youth Notes GRADE SCHOOL Congratulations and thanks to Grade 6 children, parents, and all helpers who worked the Grade 6 Valentine Mission Bake Sale. Total proceeds and winners will be named in next week s church bulletin. Once again, we thank you, and the mission children pray for and thanks you. Diocesan Testing of Grade 8 and Grade 5 students is completed and has been mailed in to the correction facility. Results will be received by our office in late April and parents will receive information at that time. This test assesses the students cumulative knowledge of religious information from Grade 1 to Grade 8, and offers a percentage comparison between all religious education programs and Catholic School programs. The youth have taken the testing seriously and we hope that the results show how much they know their faith. More importantly, we hope that knowing their faith greatly impacts their daily practice of the faith. PRE-KDGN Sunday morning religion program takes place in the Museum Dining room during the l0:30 Mass. We welcome all 4 yr. old and 5 yr. old children to the classes each week. Singing Bible songs, learning the Gospel of the week from their Promise magazine, crafts and other fun activities, refreshments or treats are part of each week s experiences. The three goals are: Community Creativity Celebration. RCIA sessions continue on Monday nights. This week our topic is Dignity of Life. If you know of anyone interested in more information on the Catholic Church, please call Sr. Pierre at 857-6404. 2017 The Year of Grace The freedom we all have is not a license to murder, be unfaithful, or tell lies. We can do these things. But we can choose not to do any of them. If we trust God - and God s saving plan for us and for the word - then we will want to be just, to act with righteousness, and to be in right relationship with God, with others, and with the whole of creation. What have I heard today about being right with God? What have I been taught today about right relationship with family and friends? How will I choose to trust God this day, this week? JUNIOR HIGH Grade 8 will be studying Chapter 4 Me, Myself, and I Body and Soul. Along with hand outs. Grade 7 will be studying Lesson 4 Part 2 of Patriarchs with follow up in the Bible. HIGH SCHOOL Seniors - You are invited to the St Francis Senior Retreat on March 18-19. This retreat is a laid back experience at Lake Sara. Retreats take you out of your normal environment and give you a chance to explore your relationship with God. We have activities, speakers, great food, Mass, and a whole lot more. Parents - this is a GREAT opportunity for your student. Please consider sending them on this retreat! High School Bible Study meets in the Teen Center on Wednesday nights from 8:35 pm - 9:15 pm (after Religious Ed Classes). We look at the upcoming Gospel and talk about how it relates to our lives. This is student led but adults participate as well. YOUTH NOTES Teen Center is NOT open for Junior High students on Friday, February 17. The Valentine's Dance replaced the Teen Center night. Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up? Teutopolis State Bank presents the CHWC Dinner Theater production of Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up on February 17, 18, and 19. On Friday, February 17 & Saturday, February 18 there is a dinner & show with advance tickets sold only. Tickets are $25. Doors open at 5:30 pm & dinner is served at 6:00 pm. The show will follow dinner. On Sunday, February 19, there is a show only for $10 per person. Sunday's tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door. Doors open at 4:30 pm and the show is at 5:00 pm. Tickets can be purchased through Hawickhorst and Associates at 857-3912. The show follows students as they go through Catholic Grade School and High School in the 50s. It is directed by Kent Probst & Sandy Fisher & is being put on by lots of great local actors and musicians! There's humor and some thought provoking times, great singing, and great food! The show contains a lot of humor about coming of age in the Catholic School system which involves some adult themes. We are looking forward to a great show! Scrip Cards are on sale Monday - Friday at Niebrugge Financial and on Saturday mornings at the parish office! Thanks for supporting our youth!
