As Boca Raton Synagogue is an environment where all of its members and visitors need to feel valued and welcomed, members are required to comport themselves in a manner which reflects mutual respect and a sense of inclusiveness. In our Synagogue, we value debate about pressing issues. This is consistent with the American democratic tradition. Our sages saw the value of arguments conducted L Shem Shamayim, for the sake of heaven, believing that great minds who engage in respectful debate will arrive at better solutions. They valued and welcomed alternate views, as do we. Derech Eretz, good and proper conduct, and mutually respectful dialogue are core values of the Synagogue community. These create a safe place for inspiration and spiritual growth, the central purpose of the Synagogue. It is a violation of Jewish law and ethics to use harsh language (vitriol) to demonize or to marginalize people with whom one may disagree. Uncivil expression reflects negatively on our Synagogue as well as on the individuals who engage in such behavior. Boca Raton Synagogue expects its members to act and to speak with kindness and sensitivity to others. It is only in this fashion that a strong, vibrant, and harmonious community can be created and maintained. Adherence to this policy is a requirement for membership in good standing at the Boca Raton Synagogue. In line with our recently published Derech Eretz Statement, we mention some examples of how we can be more sensitive toward others and create an even better community. It is a poor message and a lack of courtesy to read while the Rabbi or a guest is speaking. Please do not ever exit the parking lot through the entrance. We learn from differing opinions and diverse sources of information. In arriving at our opinions, we should be open to listening to a broad range of perspectives, even those with which we may ultimately disagree. All of these Mensch Messages have been submitted to the office. If you have a Mensch Message you would like us to promote, please email us at office@brsonline.org Page 3

Additionally, you can join the fight against BDS, as the contents of this year s Mishloach Manot are Israeli products. Important Dates: Order Deadline - March 16. Mishloach Manot Assembly - March 21 (Volunteers Needed). Mishloach Manot Delivery Pickup - March 22 (Volunteers Needed) Contact BRSsisterhood@gmail.com with any questions. BRS MIDDOT The BRS Middot campaign continues with a Middah of the Month. As Adar is upon us, and we were saved as a people in large part due to the close relationship between Mordechai and Esther, we thought it important to stress that kind of family relationship. By giving Kavod to parents and grandparents, we grow stronger as individuals and as a people. Our Middah of the Month involves children and grandchildren making an effort to call parents and grandparents at least every Erev Shabbat. Saying "hello -- how are you? I'm thinking of you", would be an embodiment of the family ties which secure our future as a people. ISRAEL UPDATE SOCIAL ACTION Affirming its support for the "Jerusalem intifada" that Israel has been witnessing for the past five months, the Islamic Republic of Iran has declared that it will give financial rewards to families of Palestinian terrorists. Speaking at a press conference in Beirut, Iranian ambassador to Lebanon, Mohammad Fathali, said: "Continuing Iran's support for the oppressed Palestinian people, Iran announces the provision of financial aid to families of Palestinian martyrs who were killed in the "Jerusalem intifada." Every family of a martyr will receive $7,000; a family whose home was demolished by the IDF will receive $30,000. The aid will be conveyed through the Palestinian branch of the Shahid Institution, established in Iran in 1992. It is clear that decoupling Iran's terrorist activity from sanctions hoping for better behavior was a naïve blunder. In addition, Iran conducted multiple ballistic missile tests Tuesday in what it said was a display of "deterrent power," defying US sanctions imposed earlier this year aimed at disrupting its missile program. Ballistic missile tests are seen as a means for Iran's military to demonstrate that the nuclear deal will have no impact on its plans. It's time to reconsider strangling sanctions against Iran. Urge Congress and the President to act. The next Social Action Committee meeting will be at 7:30 pm Wednesday, March 16 in the Board Room. Please join us. The Gemara points out that if the food item is one that normally takes a long time to cook, if placed on a fire right before Shabbat, there is no chance that it will be ready to eat on Friday night. It may take several hours for the food to be prepared and as such, there is no incentive to stoking the coals to speed up the cooking process. The Gemara refers to such a food as חייתא a קדרה pot of raw foods, which is permitted to place directly on a heat source before Shabbat and allow it to cook throughout Shabbat. This only applies to foods that are normally cooked for a significant period of time, such as meats, but not to foods that are cooked quickly, such as vegetables. Many poskim even forbid relying on the leniency of קדרה חייתא for vegetables even if they will be cooked in a manner that will take a long time because the vast majority of people do not cook in such a manner. Even when it comes to meats, different methods of cooking take different amounts of time, some significantly longer than others. Smoking meat through indirect heating, can take 9-10 hours. Therefore, it is permissible to place meat into a smoker before Shabbat since it is clear that there is no way that the food can be ready for Friday night dinner and there is no reason or incentive to adjust the heat (as per R. Hershel Schachter). [It is important to note that many smokers have an electric thermostat. Therefore, it is forbidden to open the smoker while it is still on, since doing so will directly cause the heating element to adjust to the change. The smoker must be attached to a timer that will shut it off before opening it.] Parshah Thought The Torah describes the Mishkan as העדות the משכן Mishkan of testimony. Rashi explains that the Mishkan is a testimony that Hashem chooses to dwell among Bnei Yisrael. Similarly, the Menorah is also referred to as an עדות and the Gemara (Menahot 86b) elaborates that since Hashem does not need its light, it too is a sign that Hashem dwells among Bnei Yisrael. This choice was evidenced by the westernmost candle (closes to the Kodesh ha- Kodashim) always burning longer than any of the other lamps. R. Yisrael Salanter wonders why does Hashem frequently choose to express His blessing in our world. Shouldn t it be we who are beseeching Hashem? After all, aren t we the ones in need, we desire His influence and need his grace? In the normal course of human events, it is the one who needs to goes to ask from the one who has. Why is it that here Hashem is coming to us? The Nefesh ha-hayyim explains that this stems from an interesting quirk that Hashem embedded into creation. During creation, it was Hashem who made all decisions and executed His plan. After Adam s creation, Hashem gave much of this power to Adam. בזמן שעושים רצונו ( Hashem When humanity will follow the will of then Hashem will respond in kind and relate to the world (של מקום with hesed and blessing (and so too the opposite). It is almost as if it is we who are in control. In a limited way, our actions dictate how Hashem will relate to the world. The Menorah s testimony is that Hashem wants to share his blessing with us in this world but the entire process works in parallel. Although it is clear that Hashem does not need our light or the light of the Menorah, in this manner, we light the way in setting the tone for Hashem s manner in dealing with the world and He responds in kind, by providing His light to benefit our world.
