We worship and study together on Sundays at 8:30am with soloists and 10:50am with chancel choir. Sunday School is at 9:30am, with a nursery for infants and young children and a Children s Chapel for pre-k and K children. We periodically hold a Service for Wholeness on weekday evenings where respite from busyness of life can be found, as well as weekly Bible studies and activities for men and women and various monthly gatherings. We serve our congregation, our community, and the world, including a Fall Festival of Faith and Stephen Ministry. We gather mid-week during Fall and Spring semesters for a Super Wednesday meal, program, and activities for all ages, including Chancel Choir, whose membership is open to all with no auditions, and a Handbell Choir. We have an active Youth ministry for middle and high school students and a dynamic program for elementary and pre-school children, including two children s choirs, which also attend a Worship and Music Conference at Mo Ranch in the summer. We provide The Children s Place, a preschool, and the Treehouse, an after school program for elementary children. We house Denton s ecumenical soup kitchen, Our Daily Bread, in Fellowship Hall M-F every week at noon, and we volunteer working with Hearts for Homes, Habitat for Humanity, Interfaith Ministries, HOPE, Inc., the Denton Community Food Center, Spirit Horse, and mission trips throughout the year for all ages. how to become a member Membership at St. Andrew is the first step in what we consider a life-long process of discipleship, and we invite you to join us on this journey. Becoming a member affirms your faith in God and love for God s people. Membership is a commitment to this particular part of God s family, where we nurture growth in faith, worship, and service to others. We hope you find the simplicity of our membership process an engaging introduction to our life together. There are four steps to becoming a member of St. Andrew: 1. Fill out and turn in a New Member Information Form. You will find the forms on the Visitor Information table in the narthex. 2. Come to the parlor after the 10:50am worship service on the last Sunday of the month. The Session, our governing body, formally receives new members at that time. We receive new members in one of the following ways: Letter of Transfer (can be requested by our church office), Reaffirmation of Faith, or Profession of Faith and Baptism. 3. Join us during the 10:50am worship service the following Sunday (first Sunday of the month) when we recognize our new members during the service. 4. Children s Ministry Children s Sunday morning Nursery, Room 102, 8:30am-Noon Our nursery for infants and toddlers is located in the Education wing and is fully staffed on Sunday mornings. Pagers are available for you to take with you for your peace of mind, in case the nursery staff needs to get in touch with you. Children s Chapel Sunday Mornings, 10:50am Worship Service For preschoolers and kindergarteners, this worship time begins after the children s sermon in the 10:50am service. Godly Play helps them explore the purpose and meaning of worship in the children s chapel upstairs. Parents pick their children up from chapel after the worship service concludes. Preschool, Room 100, 9:30am Sue Elliott & Vera Odei Preschool children three through five years old will learn the stories of the Bible through story time, art, music and play. They will experience the stories through a rotation model curriculum, preparing them for entry into the K-5 th grade rotation model Sunday school when they enter kindergarten. K-5 th Grade, Media Room, 9:30am All children in grades K-5 will meet in the story room, next to the library, for the morning s Gathering. After the Gathering, K-3 rd and 4 th -5 th will learn and explore each Sunday morning s story in a deeper way through art, mission, storytelling, media and games. Join us in our newly refurbished children s area! Making a Difference at ST. Andrew Ushers Ushering for the Sunday morning worship services is open to all youth and adults of the congregation. Meals for CREW Wednesday Evenings, The Den, 6:15pm We would like to be able to provide a meal for the high school youth group each Wednesday night as a part of their extended youth group time. Food could be brought to church Wednesday evenings by 6:30pm and refrigerated or cooked in the Den kitchen as needed. We would serve about 15 students and adults. Super Wednesday Volunteers January 14 - April 29, Fellowship Hall, 4:30pm Many willing hands are needed on Wednesday evenings in Fellowship Hall in order for Super Wednesdays to be successful. Volunteers are needed each week to help serve the meal and staff the money table. Sign-up sheets will be posted in Fellowship Hall, so please volunteer an evening or two this spring. Pat Bennett will give you a reminder call as your turn to help approaches. Thank You! Stephen Ministry Bear one another s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2 Stephen Ministers are lay people who complete 50 hours of training in Christian caregiving. They serve others, as Paul has instructed above, by helping to bear the burdens we all experience in life. If you are going through a difficult time please allow one of our Stephen Ministers to walk with you until things get better. Middle School Youth element: an existence that satisfies all the conditions of belonging to something Super Wednesday element 6:00-7:30pm Location: Rec Center & The Den element is a community for middle school students to come and be themselves, play games and have fun, build friendships, and engage in our faith together. Sunday Morning 9:30-10:30am 6 th /7 th Grade Sunday School Location: The Den Join other 6 th and 7 th grade students as we take a look at characters in the Bible and the Christian language. We will look at people and words that we often hear about in church and discuss how they connect to our lives today. 8 th Grade Confirmation Class 9:30-10:30am Location: Rec Center Mezzanine Confirmands explore the biblical foundations of Christianity, the history of the Church, and the substance of what it means to be Presbyterian. This spring they will work with their mentors on completing their statements of faith. Spring Youthquake at Camp Gilmont, March 20-22, 2015 All 6 th -8 th graders are invited to Camp Gilmont in Gilmer, Texas to join with youth from around Grace Presbytery for a weekend retreat! The same is true for a church in transition. We are forced to ask similar transitional questions: Who are we as a faith community? Where is God calling us? What will God s future for St. Andrew look like? Our six week class will approach the answer to these questions by exploring and celebrating our history, identifying our core values, identifying our strengths, and prayerfully dreaming about our future. We will be sharing our faith and having congregational conversations together as we touch on the areas that our newly formed Mission Study Task group will explore in depth. Breakfast Club 9:30am Lisa Patterson, Room 206/208 How do we, as human beings, grow into a deeper understanding of the triune God? How do we even begin the sometimes eagerly anticipated but confusing and lifelong journey of seeing and experiencing God s actions in history and in our lives? God s revelation of God s own self comes to us through Word - Jesus Christ and the Scriptures - and both are living. God, revealed to us in Jesus Christ, came in the form of a fully human and fully divine person and God s revelation to us through the Scriptures comes in a living, breathing, active revelation. The Scriptures are a living word that requires loving attention, on the part of the community and individual listeners, to hear and to receive as the living revelation of God. Join us as we study the living Scriptures by using The Mighty Acts of God, by A. B. Rhodes to guide us in our reading, hearing and receiving. If you re looking for a way to grow in your knowledge and ability to contemplate, understand and hear God s revelation, we invite you to join us. ALL levels of learners are welcome. Through the exploration of the biblical text, class members are invited into a deepened relationship with God. Pastor s Class 9:40am Fred Cassell, Room 207/209 Join this inquisitive, faithful, lively and welcoming group for the Spring semester. They are faithfully led by Fred Cassell and study the Bible in all of its complexities and meaning. They will complete the Gospel of John on January 4, 2015 and then begin a study of the Acts of the Apostles on Sunday, February 22, 2015. Pathfinders 9:30am Richard Sale, Room 205 The Pathfinder s Sunday School Class will have a discussion of The Ragamuffin Gospel by Brennan Manning. The book is good news for the bedraggled, beat-up and burnt out.
Chancel Choir Jeff Snider, Director of Music The Chancel Choir is open to all members of the congregation as well as non-members. The ability to read music is welcome but not required, nor is an audition. We rehearse in the adult choir room at 7:30pm on Wednesday evenings and in the chancel on Sunday mornings at 9:45am. If you feel the call to sing, please consider joining this group of dedicated singers. Handbell Choir Jean Harden, Director The handbell choir offers another option for musical participation in worship. This intergenerational group consists mostly of St. Andrew members but over the years has usually included non-members as well. The handbells play in worship several times each year, most often during Advent, Lent, and the Easter season. Some familiarity with music notation is strongly recommended, but previous ringing experience is not required. We will teach you what you need to know about ringing. Membership is open without audition to ringers from senior high through adult. Junior high students with substantial past musical experience may be accepted into the group after consultation with the director. Small ensembles for more advanced ringers are filled by invitation only, from the ranks of the principal group. The full handbell choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-7:30pm in the adult choir room. Beginning date TBA Service for Wholeness February 24 You are invited to a Service for Wholeness in the sanctuary at 6:00pm on Tuesday, February 24. This informal service affirms God s love for us in the face of spiritual and perhaps physical pain and suffering. It is a way for us to be present with one another in love. Consisting of a short meditation from the one of the pastors, responsive reading, and prayer, the service offers a quiet and contemplative approach to worship. In part of the service, worshipers are invited to bring a need or concern before God by coming forward for prayer with one of the pastors or Stephen Ministers. Perhaps it is an illness, or treatment for an illness. Or maybe it involves a family or business matter, or a relationship of one kind or another. Whatever the need, the Service for Wholeness is an opportunity to bring that need into the presence of God in a confidential environment. The service concludes with the celebration of the Holy Communion. Music Ministry Children s Choirs Jannette Hindman, Director Participating in choir gives children the opportunity to serve God as they offer up their singing in worship as a gift. The children s choirs rehearse on Wednesday evenings after the meal in Fellowship Hall. The Covenant Choir, for second through fifth grades, rehearses from 6:15-7:00pm, and the Noel Choir, for kindergarten and first grades, rehearses from 7:00-7:30pm. The children s choir room is located on the floor directly above the church office. All children are invited to join a choir! Youth Choir Jannette Hindman, Director Youth Choir meets from 9:00-9:45 on Sunday mornings in the children s choir room and is open to all middle school and high school youth. It provides an opportunity for our youth to worship through music and to serve God by enhancing the worship services of St. Andrew. Singing in choir also enables our youth to participate more fully in the worship life of our church, and is a way for them to give back to their church, which supports its children and youth programs fully. Last but not least, listeners are blessed by the beautiful sounds of our teens singing praise to God. Come join us! Instrumental Ensemble Adam La Spata, Director The instrumental ensemble provides string, wind, and percussion musicians the opportunity to honor God by playing hymn orchestrations and original compositions and arrangements for instruments. We play in worship several times each year, seeking to enhance the meaning of the liturgical seasons. Membership is open without auditions to instrumentalists from high school age on up even if they are not St. Andrew members; junior high students with sufficient musical experience may be accepted into the group after consultation with the director. All members of the ensemble should be able, at a minimum, to play a notated hymn melody and harmony, at a tempo suitable for singing. The full ensemble rehearses on Sunday afternoons from 12:30 to 1:30pm in the adult choir room. Rehearsals will begin on January 18. Join us as we tell the witches stories and uncover the cultural, social, political, and gendered reasons behind a crisis that gripped much of New England in the late seventeenth century. Joan of Arcadia Stephanie Raesz Room 205, January 14-April 22 In this TV series (2003-2005), teenager Joan finds herself talking to God in the form of random people such as a teenage boy, a school custodian, or a dog walker on the street. Often, God gives her assignments designed to help other people, and just as often these assignments are outside of her comfort zone. Is she really talking to God, or is she crazy? Come watch to see what you think. Each week will include a video of one episode, followed by discussion. Chess 101 Michael Ball Room 206/208, January 14-February 11 Chess serves as a wonderful way for people to connect while playing a truly beautiful game that has been shown to improve memory, reasoning, and creativity. Incredibly, the origins of chess trace all the way back to around 600 AD. This class is intended to serve as an introduction to chess. Super Wednesday Legislating Morality Kirsten Brown and Richard Sale Room 206/208, February 25-April 22 Kirsten Brown and Richard Sale will be leading a discussion about the pros and cons of legislating morality. We will be watching Ken Burns film, Prohibition, a threepart documentary telling the story of the rise and fall of the Eighteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Please join us for this wonderful, insightful film and a lively discussion! This class will meet February 25 through April 22. Roller Coaster Riding That Old Time Religion, USA Style: Early Inspirational and Cautionary Tales Dr. James Duke, Brite Divinity School Fellowship Hall, March 25-April 22 Come and experience the roller coaster ride of that old time religion from our earliest days as a nation. Learn of this interesting and turbulent time through the eyes and knowledge of church historian and professor, Dr. James O. Duke. Dr. Duke is the I. Wylie and Elizabeth M. Briscoe Professor of History of Christianity and History of Christian Thought at Brite Divinity School. You will be given the opportunity to learn the history of this old time religion and be able to apply it to today s religious landscape. Marriage Enrichment Hank and Regina Hunt Room 207/209, March 25-April 22 This class is targeted for married couples (or those about to be married) who desire to sustain, strengthen, improve, enrich and enjoy their marital relationship. What draws couples closer together through the years? What can push them away from one another? How do the inevitable disagreements experienced in all marriages keep from morphing into all out warfare? What behaviors and habits enhance affection and admiration? What are the secrets of a mutually and increasingly satisfying relationship? This class experience is for couples who are asking questions such as these. The class will be led by Hank and Regina Hunt. Hank is a Presbyterian minister and pastoral counselor. Regina is certified spiritual director. Together they have a counseling and spiritual direction practice in Dallas. One Great Hour of Sharing Offering April 5, 2015 The One Great Hour of Sharing Offering will be received on Easter Sunday, April 5, and you will find the envelopes in the pew racks. This offering is distributed among the Presbyterian Hunger Program, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, and the Self-development of People Program. Please give generously as we remember to share joyfully through our giving. Children pick up banks on March 29 and return them on Easter Sunday. Super Wednesday Hymn & Handbell Fest April 29, 6:30pm Fellowship Hall We hate to even bring it up, but the Spring semester of Super Wednesday activities and programs will draw to a close April 29. We always end our Spring semester with a hymn and handbell fest in Fellowship Hall. Making a Difference in Denton Community Outreach Committee This diaconate committee provides opportunities for members of St. Andrew to assist with community needs identified from a variety of community agencies and organizations. Activities for January-May 2015 include the following: Give-A-Meal-A-Month: Food is collected each month in the bins by the soda machines near Fellowship Hall for distribution to the Denton Food Center. January & February: Community Outreach will collect congregation donations of needed supplies for the Denton Christian Preschool. March through May 3: Community Outreach will collect congregational donations for Giving Hope, Inc. Mothers Day Gift Bags. The committee welcomes others to become a member of the Community Outreach Committee. We meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. Treehouse Volunteers The Treehouse is St. Andrew s outreach mission to low-income children within the Denton Independent School District. Each day, 14 children from three different elementary schools are picked up on the St. Andrew bus and brought back to our Rec Center to spend their after school time with us. They enjoy a healthy snack, have time to rest or do homework, play in the gym or outside, have arts and crafts time, music time, and chapel time, providing them with a safe and loving environment. The Treehouse has one paid staff member/director, and we rely completely on volunteers to spend time with the children each afternoon and/or to provide their daily snack. If you feel called to this mission, please contact the director at stephanieraesz@ verizon.net. Those who give their time can do so weekly, a few times a month, or be on our substitute list. All you need to do is pass a background check and a brief orientation. Snack volunteers are provided with a schedule and a list of snack options. Please prayerfully consider whether your time and talents would match the needs of this special program. Give a Meal Our monthly food drive for the Denton Community Food Center is organized by the diaconate s Community Outreach committee. The monthly menu is in the bulletin each week, and the committee asks that we bring our staples to the collection bin by the Coke machine near the doors to Fellowship Hall. They will deliver the food to the Food Center at the end of the month. Our monthly food drive is a simple yet powerful way to help feed our hungry neighbors in Denton. Thank You! Birthday Endowment This endowment was established in 2007 and provides income to fund mission efforts not covered by the annual mission budget. Income has been used in previous years to send children and sponsors to Mo-Ranch s Worship and Music Conference, as well as for mission projects such as water filtration systems for people in Guatemala. Traditionally, members contribute an amount equal to the number of years being celebrated. So on your next birthday remember this endowment and contribute toward making a lasting difference in the lives of others. Our Daily Bread Many in Denton turn for help to this community soup kitchen housed at St. Andrew. The kitchen staff always needs volunteers, and there are other avenues to serve as well. Theology on Tap is a multi-generational gathering where inquiry and reflection cross with leisure and a good drink. More specifically, it is a discussion on matters of human interest with theological significance. We aim to connect theology and life, and learn about God and ourselves in the process. On a typical night, we ll gather around 6:30 for drinks, food, and discussion. The facilitator for the evening will frame the topic for discussion, make some remarks to get the discussion going, and then prompt a larger discussion with the group. Each participant is responsible for helping others think through the topic and move the discussion in a stimulating, engaging, and fruitful direction. We will meet at Banter Coffee house on Oak street during the colder months and move back to our regular meeting spot, Eastside Social Club, as the weather allows. Presbyterian Women January 21 the women will gather for Communion together to start the new year at 9:30am with Lisa Patterson. March 3 the women will meet for a business meeting in the Parlor at 9:30am April 21 we will meet in the Parlor for a program lead by Rabbi Geoffrey Dennis on Judaism and celebrate the Birthday Offering and Least Coin. August 25 the women will meet for a business meeting in the Parlor at 9:30am. March 31 and June 30 we will join the Denton Association of Christian Women for fellowship and program. Women s Lenten Book Study Wednesdays at Noon, Room 206/208 February 18-April 1 Leader: Lisa Patterson Come and join this lively discussion group as we tackle questions of faith from many different angles. We are an ecumenical group and will read and study a book together beginning on Ash Wednesday and concluding the Wednesday of Holy Week. We will examine our lives during this Lenten journey. This group is led by Lisa Patterson. Kirkin o the Tartans April 19, 2015 St. Andrew will hold a Kirkin o the Tartans service on Sunday morning, April 19, 2015. This is a Presbyterian service based on the traditional Scottish blessing of the clans. Our version will focus on an international, inclusive blessing of our church family, with a blending of worship, music and ceremony, followed by fellowship at an international potluck lunch. 2015 Spring Guide 11
