1 St. Andrew Presbyterian Church Denton, Texas Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost September 21, 2014, 8:30 a.m. and 10:50 a.m. Hearing devices and large print Bibles and hymnals are available. Ask an usher. Gathering around God s Word Prelude Suite on The Church s One Foundation Robert A. Hobby Welcome and Call to Worship Leader: Seek the Lord while he may be found, People: Call upon him while he is near; Leader: Let the wicked forsake their way, People: And the unrighteous their thoughts; Leader: Let them return to the Lord, that he may have mercy on them, People: And to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. All: Let us worship God! *Hymn 473 For the Beauty of the Earth dix x *Opening Prayer Kim Warner Prayer of Confession O God of Righteousness and Truth, you know us better than we know ourselves. You know that we are not always righteous, and do not always tell the truth even to ourselves, or to you, let alone to people around us. We confess our failings, O Lord, and ask not only for forgiveness, but for guidance and strength of will to lead a better life, and to walk in the ways of righteousness and peace. In the name of Christ, we pray. Amen. (silent confession) Kyrie (Hymnal No. 565) Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Declaration of Pardon Leader: Friends, believe the good news of the gospel. People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God! Call to Faithfulness Leader: As God s own people, be merciful in action, kindly in heart, humble in mind. Be always ready to forgive as freely as God has forgiven you. And, above everything else, be loving, and never forget to be thankful for what Christ has done for you. *Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.
2 Prayer for Illumination Proclaiming God s Word Mary Jo North Old Testament Reading Psalm 84:1-12 Old Testament, page 513 Leader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! Children s Sermon (10:50 a.m.) Marissa Glasschroeder Children ages three years through kindergarten are invited to go to the Children s Chapel at this time. Older children are invited to remain in the sanctuary with their parents. Anthem My Shepherd Will Supply My Need Virgil Thomson My shepherd will supply my need, Jehovah is his name. In pastures fresh he makes me feed beside the living stream. He brings my wandering spirit back when I forsake his ways. He leads me for his mercy s sake in paths of truth and grace. When I walk through the shades of death, thy presence is my stay. One word of thy supporting breath drives all my fears away. Thy hand, in sight of all my foes, doth still my table spread. My cup with blessings overflows, thine oil anoints my head. The sure provisions of my God attend me all my days, O may thy house be my abode, and all my work be praise. There would I find a settled rest, while others go and come, no more a stranger or a guest, but like a child at home. Copyright 1938, Virgil Thomson New Testament Reading Ephesians 4:1-16 New Testament, page 182 Leader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! Sermon Of Knickers and the General Assembly Fred Cassell Responding to God s Word *Apostles Creed (unison) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. Moment for Mission Curtis Wells *Hymn 442 The Church s One Foundation aurelia Presentation of Tithes & Offerings Offertory Shalom (from The Aeolian Sonata) dan Locklair *Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. The rosebuds in the chancel announce the births of Andrew Lawson Widmer, born September 12 to proud parents Jay and Jessica Widmer, and proud grandparents Terry and Bob Widmer; and Joseph Collier Hersey, born September 16 to proud parents Susan and Chris Hersey, and proud grandparents Beth Ann and James Black. Congratulations! Lisa Patterson will be in Albany, Oregon assisting with Brandon Lewis installation service on Sunday, September 21. She will also get the pleasure of baptizing Micah on that same day. She will be at the church cabin in Pagosa Springs, Colorado on Sunday, September 28. Brandi Schoel will also be helping in the installation service and leading the Women s Retreat to Colorado on those same Sundays. We re grateful for the service of Fred Cassell who is preaching this morning and will be taking pastoral calls this week. For pastoral calls, please call the church office. Welcome! We are delighted that you have joined us for worship today and pray that you experience the presence of Jesus Christ in our midst. For more information about St. Andrew and our ministry together, please stop by the Visitor s Welcome Center in the narthex. If you are interested in becoming a member of this congregation, we will gladly provide you with that information. Brandon Lewis To Be Installed Brandon Lewis will be installed as pastor at United Presbyterian Church in Albany, Oregon on Sunday, September 21. We re excited for Brandon, Hillary, Caden, Elliott and Micah, and our prayers are with them and the church as they begin their ministry together. Ladies Tuesday Afternoon Study Begins The Ladies Afternoon Study Group will begin one week later than initially planned. Please mark your calendars and join the group on Tuesday, September 23 at 1:30pm in Room 206. They will be studying Bill Hybels book and video, Too Busy Not to Pray. World Communion Sunday October 5, 2014 We will receive the Peacemaking Offering during worship on World Communion Sunday. This annual offering is allocated using the apportionment of 25% for local use, 25% divided between Grace Presbytery and Synod of the Sun, and 50% for the General Assembly Mission Council for its peacemaking efforts. Please plan to give generously to this special offering on October 5. Thank You!
4 Prayer Concerns This Week Elaine Kennedy Laura Solyntjes, sister of Phil Solyntjes A complete list of the ongoing prayer concerns is available in the Narthex. Super Wednesday Wednesday, September 24 Menu: Meatloaf, Mashed Potatoes & Gravy element Rec Center, 6:00-7:30pm CREW Rec Center, 6:00-7:30pm Justice: What s the Right Thing to Do? Explore your culinary creativity or bring the foreign (or American) food you enjoy the most, from appetizers to desserts. We will have the warming ovens turned on before worship so you can place your dishes in there to keep warm. We will also have extra plugs available for crock pots. Cool dishes can be put in the refrigerator, and we will have volunteers to receive food and assist. Coffee, tea, and water will be served. We know you will all be hungry and ready to eat a wonderful meal after worship that day, so put October 5 on your calendar for an international feast! Back by Popular Demand: A New Membership Directory! So many of you have asked for a new pictorial membership directory that we will begin the photography phase soon so you can have the pictures before Christmas. We will begin sign-ups for photo appointments at the end of September, and the pictures will be taken during the first two weeks of November. Be looking for a sign-up table in the Narthex on Sundays and in Fellowship Hall on Super Wednesdays. We want to make sure that everyone is included in this project! Plastic Bag and Plastic Bottle Drive Update Our Daily Bread greatly appreciates your generosity with donations of plastic bags and plastic bottles this summer. However, storage is limited. Please hold your donations until further notice. Diaper Drive Community Outreach Committee calls on congregation members to help with the annual St. Andrew Diaper Drive. From September through October, the committee asks for donations of infant and toddler diapers or pull-up adult diapers. The diapers will benefit both Interfaith Ministries diaper program and also some Our Daily Bread clients. Diapers should be placed in the 2 collections boxes by the soda machines outside of Fellowship Hall. Please Don t Be Invisible! Wear Your Name Tag! During this time of transition, there are many reasons it would be helpful if everyone made a new commitment to wear their name tag. Not only new pastors or personnel would like to know our names and put them together with our faces, but so would visitors! Name tags help new members feel more at home and a part of the church community, and name tags make it easier for visitors to be identified and feel more comfortable. So please brush aside your aversions to wearing name tags, and help us to be more welcoming to all! The Membership Committee thanks everyone for the many smiles, hospitality, and name tags!
