Hello, Thirty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time November 18, 2018 Notes From The Pastor's Pen This Sunday we are celebrating the Feast of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne. Normally we wouldn t do this on a Sunday but because she is a secondary patron of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, and it is the 200 th anniversary of her arrival in St. Louis, we are. Actually I didn t just decide to do this myself, the Archbishop has given permission for all parishes in the Archdiocese to do this and also forwarded some information about her (which I am adapting to our space below). She had already lived through some interesting times before getting to St. Louis. Born August 29, 1769 at Grenoble and educated by the Visitation nuns at Sainte Marie d en Haut, Rose Philippine Duchesne entered the Visitation community at the age of 17. During the Reign of Terror the community was expelled from France and Philippine returned home. After the Concordat of 1801, she and her companions attempted to rebuild their convent but were unsuccessful. In 1804 she persuaded Mother Barat, Founder of the Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, to accept the convent of Sainte Marie, and Philippine and four others became postulants. She was professed in 1805. In 1818, with four companions, she was sent to the United States of America to found the first American house of the Society, a log cabin at St. Charles, near St. Louis, Missouri. She opened the first American free school west of the Mississippi, received the first American postulant in 1820, and, by 1828 had founded six houses. In 1840, Rose Philippine Duchesne resigned as superior to devote herself, at the age of 71, to beginning a school for the Indians at Sugar Creek. Deteriorating health forced her to resign this much cherished work and on November 18, 1852, she died, having spent 34 years of her life extending the work of the Society as an international community. I had often heard of her long desire to work with the Indians and her difficulty with learning the Potawatomi language resulting in her only spending one year with them, but I didn t realize she was already in her 70 s at that time. Even with that she did manage to serve them with her prayer and by her example, gaining the name Woman Who Prays Always. Rose Philippine Duchesne was beatified in 1940 and canonized in 1988. Her feast is observed in the Society of the Sacred Heart on the day of her birth into eternal life. As we celebrate this local saint may we be inspired to consider how we can help spread God s word in the world today. Peace, Fr. Parish School of Religion Update Today the fourth and fifth grades are learning about prefigurement. Many of the patriarchs we read about in the Old Testament are figures that point to Christ. Many of the events point to events in the life of Christ and the Church. Isaac for example prefigures the sacrifice of Christ. Abraham is to give up his only son on an altar for forgiveness of sins against God. Isaac carries the wood for the pyre on his back up to the sacrifice. Moses prefigures Christ when he leads his people out of slavery in Egypt. The examples are countless and the deeper we come to understand the scripture the more prefigurement we come to understand. God did not wait so many centuries to send His Son for no reason, He had a plan to prepare His people. Knowledge of the Old Testament still prepares each of us for coming to know Christ ever more deeply. Thank you to everyone who participated in the Box of Joy program. We did well for our first year and sent 47 boxes to Children in Haiti, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Nicaragua and El Salvador! Annual Collection For The Catholic Campaign For Human Development Saturday, 11/17/2018 Sunday, 11/18/2018 Did you know that in the United States, one in six people lives in poverty? Children's Christmas Pageant Practice Since we have now made it to November it is time to start thinking about the Christmas Pageant! TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION November is a month of remembrance for the dead, and cemeteries have long been a focus for prayer. Our tradition holds great respect for bodily remains, since the body was created and redeemed by God, was once the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit, and has a destiny of life with God in glory. The funeral practices of the early church contrasted greatly with those of the pagans, who had a great dread of the dead body. The ancient Christian funeral liturgy ended with the relatives and friends giving a final kiss to the body. It expressed affection and showed their faith that the grave would not be the last word. This kiss horrified pagans, who thought that any contact with the dead was degrading. Every year on their loved one s birthday to life, the Christians would return to the place of their burial to mark their profound communion with those whose lives were hidden in Christ. Typically, they buried the dead with their faces turned toward the east, symbolizing the rising of the Sun of Justice, Christ, at the end of days. They were attracted to the catacombs or burial grounds just as we are today. They would often celebrate the Eucharist at the tomb. Before long, as soon as Christians were allowed to build places for worship, they relocated cemeteries from beyond the city walls to surround the church. This was not so much because the church made the ground holy, but because the bodies of the saints hallowed the ground on which the church was built, a subtle but beautiful difference. Rev.
