MARRIAGE: Arrangements are to be made six months in advance. MISSION STATEMENT St. Januarius is a Roman Catholic community of faith focused on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. We are grateful to those who have built up St. Januarius to be a welcoming, active, and spiritual parish. With the Eucharist and through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we strive to use the gifts and talents given to us by the Father to support the lives of parishioners at all age levels and stages of life. We also pledge to live our lives so that through our words and actions all may feel the presence of Jesus Christ in the world today.

Page 2 I want to thank each one of you for your prayers, cards and best wishes while I was in the hospital - they were greatly appreciated. Our annual Pork Roast Dinner will be held on Sunday, September 13. Extra raffle tickets are available in the church office. Reminder, there will be no morning Mass during the week of August 24-28 due to painting of the sanctuary. A suggestion was received: Dear Fr. Ken: My mind begins to wander during your homily. Is it possible for you to cut back on your time? Anonymous Dear Anonymous: You are allowed to let your mind wander. Fr. Ken FOOD FOR THOUGHT: What is the most important thing? Jesus. If we forge ahead with our own arrangements, with other things, with beautiful things but without Jesus, we make no headway, it does not work. Jesus is more important. ~Address, Vigil of Pentecost With the Ecclesial Movements, May 18, 2013 May God s perfect peace and love remain with you always! ~ Fr. His name, a patronymic, means "son of Tolomai" and scholars believe he is the same as Nathanael mentioned in John, who says he is from Cana and that Jesus called him an "Israelite...incapable of deceit." The Roman Martyrology says he preached in India and Greater Armenia, where he was flayed and beheaded by King Astyages. Tradition has the place as Abanopolis on the west coast of the Caspian Sea and that he also preached in Mesopotamia, Persia, and Egypt. The Gospel of Bartholomew is apochryphal and was condemned in the decree of Pseudo-Gelasius. Tuesday: St. Louis - Louis was strong-willed, strongminded. His word was trusted utterly, and his courage in action was remarkable. What is most remarkable was his sense of respect for anyone with whom he dealt, especially the humble folk of the Lord. To care for his people he built cathedrals, churches, libraries, hospitals and orphanages. Patron Saint of: Barbers & Grooms ; St. Joseph Calasanz - Devoted his life to the education of deprived children. In 1617 he and his assistants formed the Clerks Regular of the Religious Schools (the first priests to teach in elementary schools). Emphasizing love, not fear, Joseph wrote, If from the first a child is instructed in religion and letters, it can be reasonably hoped that his life will be happy. Thursday: St. Monica - Thru the power of prayer and patience, she converted her pagan husband and mother-in -law to the Catholic faith. Her two daughters entered the religious life, but she prayed for 17 years for her son to change from his life of sin. She is the patron saint of alcoholics, wives and abused victims. Friday: St. Augustine - Founder of religious priests, and one of the greatest saints that ever lived. He overcame strong heresies, practiced great poverty and supported the poor. Patron saint of brewers because of his conversion from a former life of loose living, His complete turnaround and conversion has been an inspiration to many who struggle with a particular vice or habit they long to break Saturday: The Passion of St. John the Baptist - He spoke the truth with great courage in calling others to a true change of heart, and to embrace the ways of God. He did this not only by preaching but also by example. He fasted in the desert, and prepared the way for Jesus. He had such a great courage, that he wasn t fearful of speaking out about the immoral activities of his day. This was the reasoning that led to his death, but he continued. We can learn a lot from his life. We too, can embrace the ways of God and speak out of the immorality of our day, and with the help of St. John the Baptist; we can prepare the way for Jesus to those around us.
