Baft Baft Family Deceased First Sunday of Lent Reflection We begin the forty-day Lenten journey in the desert where the new Adam becomes freer as the conscience becomes sharper. United with all who are suffering from famine and oppression, Jesus, the new Moses, relives the forty years of Israel s struggle in the solitude of the exodus that Jesus, true God and true man, was tempted by Satan throughout his life. Jesus mission is the focus of his adversary s attack. Would he be able to accept being poor, ignored and weak? Would he be able to refrain from selling short the reality of his incarnation by using miracles, force, and seduction as if he were superhuman? Would he be the Servant-Son according to the heart of God, or Prometheus, relying upon his own power to steal fire from heaven? Every time Jesus felt in his heart the temptation to be a worldly messiah, he rejected it, relying solely on the word of God. He fled the crowds who clamored for his marvels and wished to make him king. He rebuked Peter who came between him and the way to his passion. Jesus wished to drink the bitter cup of his death, not to save himself once he was nailed upon the cross. This stands as a strong judgment against many of our choices, our appetite for consumerism, our solicitation of profit and our unbridled ambition. How can we set priorities at the beginning of Lent without contemplating Jesus who is turned toward the one source of all his actions, the word of God? OUR LIFE OF FAITH IS A RELATIONSHIP OF LOVE We live in relationship with God, and it is an active relationship like a parent and a child, or among friends. We also live in relationship with our sisters and brothers in faith. Baptism calls us to foster and deepen our relationships of love with God and others. Think of a relationship that you can foster this week that will enliven your faith. Visit www.onmissionchurchalive.org, sign up for email updates and stay active. CORRECTION The Mass Intention for Sunday, March 5 at 8:00 am was listed incorrectly in last week s bulletin. The Mass Intention is for the Deceased Members of the Hornyak / Hensel Families from Family. We apologize to the family for the error.

MARCH 5, 2017 FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT PAGE 3 EUCHARISTIC ADORATION During the season of Lent, we will have Eucharistic Adoration on Wednesdays (March 8, 15, 22, 29 and April 5) from 9:00 am - 6:45 pm. Each Lent we are called to reflection, prayer, penance and fasting. Eucharistic Adoration is an opportunity for us to spend time with Our Lord in quiet prayer, meditation and adoration. Also, some additional ways of prayer and reflection available at Holy Sepulcher to enhance our Lenten journey are Daily Mass and Stations of the Cross. The Lord invited us to come be in His presence and spend time with him. INSTRUMENTALISTS Instrumentalists are needed for the upcoming liturgies - Palm, Sunday, Holy Thursday, Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday. If you are interested in participating in these liturgies, please see Madlyn, Directress of Music Ministries, after any weekend Mass. You can also email her at deritoma@hotmail.com so that music can be put together. THE LIGHT IS ON FOR YOU! The Light is Still On for You! is an initiative of the Diocese of Pittsburgh to encourage Catholics to avail themselves of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Confession is a wonderful opportunity to set aside our sinful ways and to draw closer to our Lord. Confession will be available on Wednesday, March 15 from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm in every Catholic parish in the Diocese. Due to Wednesday evening Mass, Holy Sepulcher will have confessions from 6:00-6:45 pm, Mass from 7:00-7:45 and confessions again from 7:45-9:00 pm. 40 DAYS FOR LIFE The spring 40 Days for Life Campaign will be held from March 1 April 9 in front of the Planned Parenthood Office, 933 Liberty Ave., Pittsburgh, PA, from 7:00 am - 7:00 pm daily. Holy Sepulcher has signed up for the 11:00 am - 3:00 pm shift on Friday, March 31. We are looking for volunteers to stand with us and pray to end abortion. We usually take 2 hours shifts (11:00-1:00 or 1:00-3:00) and we can generally arrange car-pooling. You may remember in January we had the painting of the Pieta in our Narthex; this painting was made up of 2,492 tiny faces, representing the lives ended by abortion at Pittsburgh s Planned Parenthood in 2014. We are hoping that our prayerful presence may make a difference. For more information, call Debbie Busin at 724-510-8670 or Gretchen Cararie at 724-898-2529 or gcararie@zoominternet.net. ELIZABETH MINISTRY Pregnant? Had a new baby recently? The Elizabeth Ministry would like to share in your joy with a welcome basket and 2 hot meals delivered to your home! MARCH 5, 2017 FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT PAGE 7 AROUND THE PARISH AND COMMUNITY LENTEN PRAYER O Lord, be with me as I enter into the desert of Lent. Please give me the courage, honesty and humility needed to recognize my own sins; and the strength, tears and firm resolve to overcome them. Purify my heart, O Lord, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. May I turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel. Lord, I offer every little sacrifice of this holy season for the following intention(s). May I remember throughout these 40 days that every little thing that I give up for love of You can become a spiritual gift for the good of others. By Your grace, O Lord, help me to grow in virtue and holiness; may I enter deeper into a life of prayer, fasting and care for the poor. O Christ, true Bread of Life, may I hunger for You alone. Be my constant joy and delight as I seek to relinquish my appetites for this world and to be fed from above with faith, hope and charity. Lord, lead me through Your sorrowful passion and death, that I may rejoice in Your resurrection. Amen. Catholic Prayer Cards.org Spring is just around the corner and the Bazaar is less than 6 months away. The Chinese Auction Committee is already planning and needs your help. Money made from the Bazaar is distributed toward the Church, the School and to the different ministries. It takes months to plan and get ready for the Chinese Auction. All donations may start coming in NOW! Please leave any donations in the coat room marked Chinese Auction. Sales and BOGO deals are great items for the Chinese Auction. More information will be given after Lent. A board display to choose specific items or ideas will be set up after Easter. CHINESE AUCTION FOR THE 2017 BAZAAR Donations from parishioners, businesses, and crafters are all items that make the Chinese Auction work. Families or friends that go in on an item or a basket theme is always fun to do. Please consider donating from now until July 30. Volunteering your time, for any part of the Bazaar isn t as hard as you think and it is so worthwhile in the end. There are many volunteer opportunities before and during the Bazaar. Thank you for your kindness and generosity. We are also asking for prayers. For every basket we make, a prayer is said. For every donation, a prayer for you is said.
