You only have to go as far as the Schedule of Events on pages 7-8 of this newsletter to see that we are a Council of Faith in Action. Everything we have planned shares our core principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism through the Faith we proclaim and learn about, the Families we love and strengthen, the Community we help build-up, and the Life affirming programs we support. The plan is there. Now we need to implement it. As such, there have been, and will continue to be, several calls for volunteers. The fact that you choose every year to remain a member of this Council, you are automatically a part of all these activities and supporting the great works that we do. These calls of service give you an opportunity to not only directly contribute to our mission but also allow you to help others lend a hand and/or contribute to God s mission on earth. As I mentioned in my first newsletter of this Columbian Year this past July, every event on our schedule is tied to professing and living out our Catholic Faith, strengthening Families, helping the Community, and affirming the importance of a full and dignified Life for all people. These principles are all biblically based and allow us to work in cooperation the God s mission on earth. As such, every time one of us participates in an event that supports these principles, we are providing a mechanism in which someone who is not in the Knights can also participate in God s mission. If we are not doing this, YOU NEED TO LET ME KNOW. It is because of this potential great impact on we have on those around us that I ask you all to not just participate in your communities but be visible in doing so. This visibility is not meant to be a boastful Look at me and what I am doing, but rather a beacon to others that when we work together there is nothing we cannot do. When we wear our Knight badge and or shirts at events, to church, or in public, it allows people to see there are men in the Community that have their best interest at heart as we go about doing the Lord s work. This collectivism is appealing to some, and reassuring to others. It tells our community that there is a group of men who are about the Lord s business; that we are here, and ready to stand in the breach for their benefit. Won t you consider how you can be more visible in our environment by visibly doing the Lord s work. Vivat Jesus, Mike Ercolano

Page 2 Deputy Grand Knight Program Director Message Gracious good day, fellow Knights. There are several key events that will be coming up in short order. The first is the Council Potluck scheduled for this Friday, 28 September, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM in the Knight s Room. Information on that was forwarded by the Grand Knight earlier in an all-hands email. First Friday Eucharistic Adoration will take place a week later on 05 October. Please take some time out of your busy days to share some quiet reflection with our Lord. It only takes half an hour. Not a Knights event, but the Saint Michael's Men's Group will be meeting the next morning, starting with 0730 Mass, followed by the never exceeded one hour monthly meeting. Well worth your time and we will be discussing the upcoming men's retreat. Posted on our website are the signup sheets for the upcoming annual Intellectual Disabilities Drive, now scheduled for weekend of 27/28 October. Also posted is the signup sheet for this year s Keep Christ in Christmas campaign. I have already received the first shipments of cards and if last year is any indication, we will sell most if not all of them during the first week. Last year, I had to order several replacement shipments of cards. More to follow on that, along with the annual Culture of Life Calendar Drive, which is also coming up. Please check the schedules and take a few minutes after your respective Mass to join your fellow Knights on the patio for these worthwhile drives. God bless. God Bless, Barry Intellectual Disabilities Drive It is estimated that between 7 and 8 million Americans of all ages, or three percent of the general population, experience intellectual disabilities. Nearly 30 million, or one in ten families in the United States, are directly affected by a person with intellectual disabilities at some point in their lifetime. In the 30+ years the Frank Nigro Columbian Foundation has been in existence, over $19,500,000 has been raised for organizations serving those with intellectual disabilities. We Empower Programs that Empower People! As the Chairman of this year s Intellectual Disabilities Drive, I recognize how significant of an impact we, as a Council, can affect. However, I cannot do it alone, it takes a village! Hello Villagers!!! This year s fund drive will take place on Saturday and Sunday, October 27 and 28. We will need several brothers to assist on the patio after all Masses so please assist after the Mass you normally attend that weekend. Brother Chuck Visk has already created a sign-up sheet and placed it on the Council website so please help if you can. Sign-up early and if you can help at more than one Mass, I will greatly appreciate the help! This is such a worthy and noble cause but as I mentioned earlier, I cannot do this alone. If you would like to volunteer but cannot access the sign-up sheet, please call me directly at (858) 722-9586. God Bless, Dan Chadkewicz

Page 3 Novena for Life The 9 week Novena requested by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) concludes Friday, September 28 2018. I would like to get an idea of how many Knights in our council have participated in this Novena; as well as other people you know of that prayed this Novena. We have a second Novena requested by the Knights of Columbus California which is on-going. This 9 week Novena concludes Saturday, October 27 2018 during Respect Life Month. This would be a great group or family opportunity to pray for all life. As stated above, I would like to get an idea of how many Knights in our council have participated in this Novena; as well as other people you know of that prayed this Novena. Deacon John has suggested this Prayer for the Saturday Novena: Holy Spirit At the dawn of creation, You brought order out of chaos. Light out of darkness, Life out of nothingness. Breathe on us once again, And change this culture of death into a Culture of life. Inspire in your people A spirit of generous welcome For each and every life, No matter how unexpected or dependent That life may be. Holy Spirit You are the Advocate. As you fill us with Yourself, Make us advocates For the unborn and all the vulnerable. Until we are all united In the endless life and joy Of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever. Amen A 9 day Novena for life will begin on January 10 2019. At the present time we are working some issues, relative to organizing and promoting this event. Yours in Christ, Michael Mac McWilliams Chairman Novena for Life

Page 4 Culture of Life Family Services (COLFS) 9th Annual Pro-Life is Good Gala Dear Brother Knights, Family & Friends, Culture of Life Family Services (COLFS) will hold its 9th Annual Pro-Life is Good Gala on October 20, 2018 at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. The Most Rev. Salvatore Cordileone, Archbishop of San Francisco, will be the keynote speaker and honored guest. Brother Knights Greg Anthony and Steve Beuerle, founders of the Light and Life mobile ultrasound program, will be honored and will receive the prestigious Sue Lopez Pro-Life Award. Their work to bring mobile ultrasound units to pregnancy help centers in California has been most laudable. COLFS is the only Catholic pro-life organization in San Diego whose ministry provides full medical services to women with unplanned pregnancies as well as to families who are underserved or uninsured in San Diego County. COLFS also works in conjunction with COLFHC (Culture of Life Family Healthcare) to provide Christ-centered healthcare for the entire family. Please consider this email an invitation for you and all members of your councils and parishes to attend the COLFS Gala on October 20th. We look forward to a strong presence by the San Diego County Knights of Columbus councils. For Life, Hugh Largey Past Chapter President San Diego Diocese Chapter Knights of Columbus

Page 5 Knights of Columbus Blood Drive Adoration Please let me know if you participated in the most recent First Friday Adoration on Sept 7-8th. Feel free to email me (mmcginni@san.rr.com) or text me (858 378-5965) with your hours completed, name and date(s). I will then compile a complete listing for the Deputy Grand Knight to ensure all participants get credit for these worthy service hours. Also, please note the next First Friday Adoration will be on October 5. Faith Chair, Matt McGinniss The Council will be sponsoring an American Red Cross Blood Drive on Sunday, October 13th in the Parish Hall/School Gym from 8 am to 2 pm. We need Knights to assist after Masses on 29/30 September and 6/7 October to collect names for appointments. Please consider signing up for this worthy cause by going to our Council website at: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1w5ltudu33rpjmipkfjvp6kz6bgkal3mhj5gemlu2aps/ edit?usp=sharing. Many thanks in helping those in our community to sign-up to give the gift of life by donating their blood. A Minute with the Membership Chairman Do you have male family members or friends, who are over the ages of 18 who you think are really special? If so, what are you waiting for? If you think they are special, so will the Knights of Columbus. They are prime prospects to contribute to and benefit from being a member of our Order. We have lots of material to share with prospective members and I am always available to help inform prospective members of what we do and close the deal. Father Mel has given the Council permission to hold our second membership drive this year on October 13/14. Please give 15 minutes of your time to help recruit after the Mass you usually attend. All recruitment material will be in the flower room. I will be at all Sunday daytime Masses, but the Council needs members in Council shirts and badges to assist at the table. Help is particularly need at the 5:30 Masses on Saturday and Sunday. All you need to do is put out a table, display our year books and KofC information and talk to perspective members. It is that simple. I will follow up with each contact and go through my prospect information script. We, the Knights of Columbus are known to be the Right Arm of the Church in support of our Bishops and Priests. We Change Lives and Save Lives. Our faith-filled activities are all related to the overall goal of living our Faith and evangelizing. Our deeds and our actions are the cornerstone to membership recruitment. Keep up the good work. Fraternally, John Giltner, FDD, PGK, PCP Our Top Gun Shares His Experiences with Fourth Degree Assembly Our Worthy Treasurer, Brother Rick Ludwig, was asked to be the Guest Speaker Tuesday, at the Father Joseph T. O Callahan Assembly on September 11, 2018. Captain Rick Wigs Ludwig, USN (Retired) gave an enlightening presentation on naval aviation, his experiences as a combat pilot in Vietnam, and later as Commanding Officer of Top Gun (Navy Fighter Weapons School) at Miramar, which coincided with the release of the original movie Top Gun. The talk was well received, and the meeting room was filled to overflow (over 40 brothers and guests) when the presentation began.

Page 6 Fall Festival Support The Fall Festival is just over a week away and we need your help to prepare for and man the Italian Booth this year. For those of you who have not signed-up please do so by going to the Council Website at: https://stmichaelsknightsofcolumbus.com/events/sign-up-forevents/. The Festival itself on 5/6 October but we definitely need help in the preparation area. The Council is also being asked to support some of the larger Parish shifts as well so please be generous with your time. We have identified specific food booth slots needing assistance. Specifically, we are still in need of at least one volunteer at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, October, 5th, one volunteer for 6:00 p.m., and at last two volunteers for the 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, October. 6th.
