Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 7, 2011 Truth shall spring out of the earth, and justice shall look down from heaven. Psalm 85:12 THE PRESENCE OF GOD After the miracle of Jesus walking on water, the disciples exclaimed, Truly, you are the Son of God (Matthew 14:33). Most Christians will probably never experience such a dramatic miracle. Like Elijah, we await the manifestation of God in other moments. Perhaps the biggest challenge for the believer is to be constantly attuned to the possible presence of God in the everyday events of life. This is a stance that takes some people years to develop. Others seem to find the Lord easily in the simple things. As the week unfolds, let us look for the presence of God in the little things around us. Perhaps, like Elijah, we will be surprised at what we find. And, like the disciples, we can add our voice to the confession, Truly you are the Son of God. Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

CONTINUING ADULT FAITH FORMATION OFFERINGS Adult Faith Formation at St. Mark the Evangelist in September 2011 Since the 3rd Edition of the Roman Missal will be implemented in Advent of 2011, Adult Faith Formation from September through December, 2011, will consist, not only of presenting the new texts of the Mass, but also exploring the meaning of the liturgy. This will provide a deeper context for the changing words and give us a new appreciation for the sacred rites of the Mass. There will be a detailed study of the parts of the Mass, their meaning and history and implications for living. These sessions will take place on Sundays, beginning on September 11 at 9:30 am, 11:30 am and at 3:30 pm. The sessions will continue on Sept. 25, Oct. 2 & 16, Nov. 6 & 14, and Dec. 4 & 11. Each session will be 1 hour and 15 minutes. All adults are welcome to become informed of the new translation, and to be renewed through a deeper understanding of the meaning of the Eucharistic Liturgy or the Mass. INTERESTED IN ADULT CONFIRMATION? An Archdiocesan-sponsored Adult Confirmation session for any adult who has already celebrated the Sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist (Communion) will be held here at St. Mark the Evangelist. Registration will take place on Monday, September 12 at 6:30 pm in Shalom followed by the first session. Nine consecutive sessions will continue each Monday evening thereafter from 7 9 pm until November 7. The celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated on Sunday, November 20 at the 5 pm Mass. A Sponsor is necessary and asked to be present at the sessions. If you have any questions, please call (210) 494-7434 ext. 325. PLEASE BRING A RECENT COPY OF YOUR BAPTISMAL & FIRST EUCHARIST CERTIFICATE ON WHICH THERE IS A PARISH SEAL, AND IF YOU ARE MARRIED IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH, A COPY OF YOUR MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE. SPONSORS ALSO MUST SUPPLY THESE CERTIFICATES WITH A CERTIFICATE OF CONFIRMATION. DID YOU KNOW? When the Israelites gathered their first harvest in the Promised Land, they were instructed to bring an offering of wheat and wine to the altar of the Lord and at the same time, they would sacrifice a lamb (Leviticus 23: 10-14). From then on they were to make the same offering every year. As Christians, we can see the offering of bread and wine plus a lamb is a symbolic precursor of what is offered in reality on our altars at every Mass. The sacrifice of thanksgiving in Hebrew, todah often mentioned in the psalms is also an important precursor of the Mass. One common Greek translation of todah was eucharisitia, from which we get our word Eucharist. Understanding the Mass, Mike Aquilina CATECHIST WORKSHOPS If you plan to be a catechist this coming year, you are asked to take at least two of the Catechetical workshops required by the Archdiocese of San Antonio each year. These workshops will not only help you in catechizing the children you teach but will also give you new insights into your own faith and help in your faith development. Please give yourself this gift. A listing of upcoming workshops will be posted soon. AN INVITATION TO JUSTFAITH How do I become someone who really cares for and acts on behalf of the poor and the vulnerable? This fall, we continue with the program called JustFaith. We invite parishioners to experience a spiritual journey into compassion. Most of us long to be a generous and compassionate people. JustFaith, now offered in hundreds of parishes across the country, provides a lively and challenging format to read, view, discuss, pray, experience and be formed by the tradition of Catholic social teaching and the Biblical call to create a more just world. This program is designed to empower and transform participants so that they can become agents of God s good news to the poor. Be ready for a challenging 30 weeks! The program runs from September 15 to May 10. For more information, call Sr. Marian Sturm (494-7434 ext 326). THE GREAT ADVENTURE Experience the Gospel in a new and powerful way through Jeff Cavin s 24-week study of Matthew: The King and His Kingdom at St. Mark the Evangelist on Tuesday mornings from 9:00-11:00 or Tuesday evenings from 7:00-9:00 beginning August 30 th. Registration will take place the weekends of August 6 th & 7 th and 13 th & 14 th. A BEYOND CANA RETREAT St. Mark the Evangelist is offering a marriage enrichment retreat for the second time to married couples who have a Christ-centered marriage, and who want to enrich their marriage through a deeper understanding of the sacrament of marriage, prayer and life-long tools of renewal. In our busy world Beyond Cana offers the couple quiet time away and gives them communications tools that guide them to identify, focus, and deal with issues that challenge their relationship in an intimate, safe environment. It is a time just with your spouse and God. This retreat will take place on Friday through Sunday, September 23 25 at Hampton Inn in Boerne, Texas. Please save the date for this gift to your spouse and yourself.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION The time you spend with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is the best time that you will spend on earth. [Mother Teresa] Adoration hours are Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:00 am to 9:30 pm and Thursday from 9 am to 9 pm. Please call: Julie @ 494-4144; Rosemary @ 496-7685; or Sandy @ 404-2379. CENTERING PRAYER FOR THURSDAY WILL BE TAKING A TWO MONTH BREAK DURING JULY & AUGUST The Thursday evening Centering Prayer Group will be taking a two month break. Meetings will resume again the first Thursday of September in 2011. Call Denise French @ 210-846-3843 for more information. FEAST OF FAITH Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus: Song of Heaven The words of the Sanctus are rooted in the scriptures. They recall the song of the seraphim in the prophet Isaiah s vision of God in majesty: Seraphim were stationed above; each of them had six wings: with two they veiled their faces, with two they veiled their feet, and with two they hovered aloft. Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts! they cried one to the other. All the earth is filled with his glory! (Isaiah 6:2-3). They recall the Gospel accounts of Jesus entry into Jerusalem: Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest (Matthew 21:9). Yet the liturgy adds something new to these ancient texts. The seraphim sang, the earth is filled with his glory. But the liturgy proclaims, heaven and earth are full of your glory. In the Eucharist, earth and heaven meet. For a moment in time, we join in the song that the angels sing for all time. The Sanctus raises us to heaven, but does not remove us from the earth. It is the song of the King who took on our human flesh so that we might share in his divine life. Corinna Laughlin, Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.
