After being transfigured, Christ looks to his disciples and gives them a simple command, do not be afraid. This week we see another exchange between Christ and his disciples. His major interaction is with one disciple in particular, Peter. The disciples are out in a boat while their friend and Lord, Jesus, is praying on a mountain. The seas become choppy and the wind is not in the disciples favor. In this scene of chaos Jesus comes walking towards the disciples on the water. We, the audience, watch as the disciples are once again terrified. Jesus speaks to his disciples and gives them the command, do not be afraid. Peter begs for his Lord to call out to him so he can walk towards Jesus on the water. Jesus calls to his disciple Peter. As Peter walks on the water towards Jesus he becomes afraid and sinks, needing to call out to Jesus to save him. Immediately Jesus catches Peter and asks why did you doubt? These two stories, the transfiguration and Jesus and Peter walking on water, have a common theme. They both talk about the fear of humanity and the simple command that Jesus gives us, do not be afraid. There are times when we are called by God and our fear is what gets in the way. Our fear stops us and causes us to doubt ourselves and our callings. In these times we must remember that our Lord continues to tell us do not be afraid. We are continuously told in our holy scripture, do not be afraid. We should never be afraid to trust in our Lord and to listen when God is calling us. The religious education center would like to remind families that the deadline for registering for religious education classes in the 2017-2018 year is August 15th. For more information, please contact the Religious Education office at 773-286-1939 or qasreoffice@qasparish.org Nineteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time August 13, 2017 3

WHY GO TO MASS EVERY SUNDAY? REASON 75 Unless they have been corrupted by the contemporary creed that claims nothing is sacred, nothing is holy, most people sense that human life is inherently sacred. From that premise it is natural for human beings to look for times and places that are holy. Keeping holy a time and a place has been at the center of every major religious tradition since humans first recognized that there existed a power beyond themselves. A sabbath, or something like it, is woven into the fabric of all the major religions of the world. A church is a house of God and the prayer and worship expressed in that sacred space makes the time holy also. It is natural for humans to seek holy places and to mark some time as holy. For Catholics that time and place is Sunday Mass. WWW.QASPARISH.ORG Queen of All Saints Basilica, Rev. Msgr. We hope the evening will provide a rich discussion, giving us tools which will help us engage in our economy as proper stewards of Creation, and as sisters and brothers to our neighbors here and around the world. If you are a registered parishioner, please come into the rectory during business hours to schedule your child's baptism. If it is not possible for you to come into the rectory, please call the rectory to make arrangements. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated two or three Sundays of the month, depending on the time of year, at 1:30 PM - call the rectory for the exact schedule. A Baptismal Preparation class for the parents is required. They are held once a month and must also be scheduled in advance. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests. The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him/her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age, may properly receive this sacrament. Nineteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time August 13, 2017 9
