OUR MISSION STATEMENT: Growing In Faith Together (G.I.F.T.) From the Pastor: What is in a name? When I was yet warm and snug in my mother s womb, the plan was to name me, Mark Philip. My last gramma was still alive at the time and she lived just long enough to influence the naming process so that when I was baptized, I was called Philip Mark. Perhaps the change was significant, perhaps not. Both are names of early disciples of the Lord. It seems that the call to follow the Lord came together with baptism and the receiving of these strong biblical names. The feast of the Baptism of the Lord recalls Jesus baptism by John in the Jordan. Although the exact nature of that baptism was different for Jesus than for us, the elements of clarifying his mission (call) and confirming his identity as beloved Son of God are similar to our baptism. When we raise a child up in the community after baptism and applaud, we are affirming them as beloved members of our faith family. The little one is truly a new brother or sister. And as members of the family of God, we take on the mission of the family business. In a word, God s business is all about sanctification. Sanctification means to make holy. From our baptism on, we are committed to being holy and making holy in the name of God. Obviously it is God that actually transforms and makes holy by an all-embracing love, but we are called to be channels or ambassadors of that love. We do that by going beyond our natural tendencies and offering super-natural compassion, forgiveness, generosity, patience, etc. Our human nature has its limits, however, in and with Christ, we can offer unlimited expressions of love. This kind of love does not count the cost; it cuts through time barriers to the timeless moment and refuses to give up on anyone. On this Feast, may we be reminded of our true identity and capacity when we live and act within God s plan for us. Let us also pray in a special way for all who live their Christian vocation with a deep awareness of their call to follow Christ in their particular sacramental vocation. Please, God, awaken in more of your people the desire to follow you with all their heart and soul and mind and strength. How about praying the vocation prayer in the bulletin? Maybe even cut it out and pray it daily. God Bless, Fr. Your generosity helped make Christmas, and the Love of Jesus, come alive for 20 adults, 56 children and youth, and 33 babies. The money given in the Red Stockings will reach many, many more people in need in the year to come. You would be amazed at how many need a Hand Up these days, especially single parents with little children. We are able to help them because of you. I believe that when we give a Gift to those in need we are truly giving a Gift to the Greatest of all Givers, God Himself. We become His Hands and His Smile and His Love to His children, young and old. So, thank you all so much. God will richly bless you during this new year. AREA FOOD SHELF Now that the Holidays are over donations to the Area Food Shelf may be dropping off, but the need continues. Following are some items that are needed at S.P.A.F. With your help, area families will be able to eat balanced and nutritious meals in the weeks to come. Breakfast: Canned Fruit Juice, Hot and Dry Cereal, Dry Powdered or canned milk; Lunch/Dinner: Soups or stews, Tuna, Canned beef and/or chicken, peanut butter, Canned fruits and vegetables, Rice, Pasta, Baked Beans, Canned Chili, Potato Buds, Tomatoes, Tomato Sauce/paste; Staples: Crackers, Sugar, Flour, Coffee, Tea, Hot Cocoa, Pancake/Biscuit Mix, Toiletries, Baby Items, Special Treats. All are needed and are greatly appreciated. You may drop these items off at the Food Shelf or in the container provided in the Narthex. We will see that these items get to S.P.A.F. Thank you for your continued support for our brothers and sisters in need.

On this feast of the Baptism of the Lord, we begin National Vocation Awareness Week. Renew your baptismal commitment as you consider your call to serve God in your particular vocation. Hopefully some will hear a call to priesthood, deaconate or religious life and will be open to that possibility. Following is the Prayer for Vocations mentioned in Fr Phil s message.. 2013 March for Life On January 22, 2013 we will mark the 40 th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. In this past 40 years, almost 55 million babies have been killed and millions and millions of women and men have been devastated by the effects of abortion. In this Year of Faith let us affirm and demonstrate our commitment to protect the life of every human being from conception to natural death. An excellent way to do that is by attending the 2013 March for Life at the State Capitol in St. Paul on Tuesday, January 22, which includes a 10:30 am prayer service at the Cathedral led by Bishop Piche and a noon rally at the Capitol. TRANSPORTATION: A bus will arrive at the Nicollet County Courthouse at 8:15 am on Jan. 22, with return timetable of approx. 3 pm. Cost is $18 round trip, which includes a bottle of water and cookie both ways. For more information about the bus, please contact Tom Hoehn at 507-381-2544. The KC s have supplied a video camera and equipment to record the Mass each Sunday for shutins on Saint Peter Public Access Channel 7. The need for editing the video is the most crucial need. Someone from town would be ideal. You will learn editing for DVD and can be supplied free a video editing program. Contact Mike Theissen at 931-1619 if interested.

Ed Ardolf Parish Hall/Office - 507-232-3897 Parish Administrative Assistant - Office Hours: Tuesday - Thursday Deacon Steven Spilman 9:00 am to 12:00 pm CHURCH OF ST. PAUL SUNDAY COLLECTION 1/6/13 - Adult - $1,149.00 / Youth - $0 / Plate - $330.00 Christmas - $125.00 / First Choice Pregnancy Services - $105.83 This weekend we recall the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River by St. John the Baptist. This was done at the beginning of Jesus earthly ministry, when he would travel for three years around the country with his disciples performing miracles, calling people to repentance, and revealing that he is God to people of faith. Baptism, mission, and ministry go together. In fact, we received our mission to spread the Good News of salvation through Jesus Christ, at our Baptism. When we were baptized, we were reborn again in the spirit, and became Christians. Our understanding of Baptism sometimes stops with the event and knowledge that it was a gift for us from God. We don t always recognize that we received a mission when we were baptized. To fulfill that mission, we re called to live as witnesses to Jesus Christ so that others will come to be saved through him. We witness to Christ by following his commandments to love God and love each other. These Commandments include everything that is in the Ten Commandments too. If we re not following the Ten Commandments, we re not going to be following the two Greatest Commandments of Jesus either. If you haven t read them lately, read Exodus Chapter 20. They are not only relevant today in 2013, they are perhaps needed more than ever. In the near future, we will be showing the video series, Catholicism at St. Paul s. This is a professionally produced television series designed to give a broad understanding of the important elements of our faith and their history. It is a series that will draw you in. Watch future bulletins for dates and times. This weekend I ll be joining my fellow class of permanent deacons for some additional training at Schoenstatt in Sleepy Eye. From time to time we ll be doing this throughout our ministry. These gettogethers are now less frequent since we re all ordained and practicing our ministry somewhere. We spend time sharing. This is very helpful. We also will be meeting couples who are considering joining the next diaconate formation group. Please pray for all of the deacons in the diocese and for those who are discerning their calling to the diaconate as well. It is all good, and all prayer is appropriate and helpful. I will be facilitating a training session for the VIRTUS Protecting God s Children lesson on Tuesday January 22 at 6:30 p.m. at St. Paul s. There a two videos and the class will last about two hours. This is required training for any church employees, and volunteers who work with children in the Diocese of New Ulm. It is also open to anyone else who would like to get a better understanding of how to prevent child sexual abuse. I d like to invite any parents and other adult parishioners to attend this session to learn more about this important subject. The material is definitely for adults only and no children are allowed.
