W E L C O M E TO THE P A R I S H OF S T. BE R N A R D! Dear Friends, This weekend s commemoration of Palm Sunday signals the end of the Lenten season as we move toward Holy Week and the commemoration of the Lord s passion. In his weekly Angelus, Pope Francis commented on the grace of God s forgiveness. He said that when we receive the grace of forgiveness, we also receive the grace to begin in newness of life. There s a little line at end of the Act of Contrition that we may look over, but which is very important. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we vow to do penance and to amend our lives. If anyone has ever worked for a partial or plenary indulgence, one of the requirements is that we have a detachment from sin. Other prayers speak of a hatred for sin. Sometimes, we can get into a spiritual rut and while we are sorry for the sins we have committed, there is no real followthrough to change our ways. Sometimes, we can find ourselves coming to confession and confessing the same old sins over and over again. Perhaps we re struggling with an addiction or a learned pattern of behavior. After we receive the Lord s grace of forgiveness, what are we doing to put that grace into action? How are we changing our lives to make it more difficult for those sins to return? We may have heard the phrase occasion of sin. Sins oftentimes don t just happen... there is a process which is followed and a walk down a lonely path before the sin happens. Those things leading up to the sin can be called the occasion for sin, and that, friends, is what we need to focus on if we re really going to use the grace of forgiveness that God has given us and chart a new path. We oftentimes know the triggers for sinfulness - those things which beckon us to walk down the path that we d rather not. Those triggers can serve to be a black hole, and suck us inward. In order to conquer sin, we need to recognize those triggers and overcome them before they overcome us. Sometimes, that can only happen with the help of professionals. We may feel defeated and embarrassed to seek professional help for our struggles, but in all actuality, friends, that s the best thing we can do! We re recognizing the problem, employing methods to change our behaviors and using the Lord s grace of forgiveness to help us move toward living a new life! The coming week will bring about a journey for us. Today, we rejoice with Jesus in His triumphal entry into Jerusalem. We will stand with the Apostles in the upper room on Holy Thursday, we will stand at the foot of the cross with Jesus on Good Friday. Come Easter Sunday, we will rejoice at the sight of the empty tomb. This is a road which leads us to redemption and the assurance of our salvation. This journey will remind us how important it is to set out on our own journey to overcome our sinfulness... to remember that we do it because we cherish the gift of our salvation, we love the thought of being with Jesus in the glory of His kingdom! There are many opportunities for prayer in the coming week. I hope that many of you will take advantage of them and embrace this time with our Lord. Because Easter is so late this year, most spring breaks have already come and gone, and there won t be any major conflicts. Allow the Lord to stir your heart as you journey faithfully with Him, in the same way He walks with you every single day. We will be all the better for it, and have a true reason to rejoice come Easter Sunday. Please remember Fr. David Timmerman in prayer. Fr. David is pastor in Milton and Edgerton. After feeling some chest discomfort, he eventually found himself here in Madison facing quadruple bypass surgery. He did very well and came through the surgery without complications. Let us join our prayers together for Fr. David as we ask the Lord to heal him and return him to back to his parish families in good health. Thanks to my brother Knights for their good work in putting on this weekend s Palm Sunday breakfast. I m also grateful to the members of the St. Augustine Circle (our young adult group) for their good work in spearheading the Easter Egg Hunt. Please note that on the last evening of Lenten devotions (April 16th), there will be no confessions that evening. Everything else will take place as usual. I will be at the Mass of Chrism that evening. There is no 4:30pm Mass on Holy Saturday. The Easter Vigil Mass will be celebrated at 7:30pm. I apologize for the goof-up in this past week s liturgical schedule. When doing the schedule, I forgot to pull the 8:30am First Saturday Mass out of the schedule, and a few of the intentions got put in the wrong place. Mea culpa. I m very sorry for the mistake. Blessed Holy Week, Fr. Michael
