St. Teresa of Avila Church Page 2 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 19, 2009 Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will raise up a righteous shoot to David Jeremiah 23:5a REST IN THE LORD For several weeks we have listened to readings that have recounted just how arduous the work of prophets and disciples can be. In today s Gospel, the Lord Jesus listens to the reports of those he had sent out two by two to minister to the people. After the apostles reported what they had done, Jesus, recognizing their fatigue, says, Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest awhile (Mark 6:31). Perhaps this is what the Lord is telling his disciples in the year 2009 as well. We need to pause on our journey of discipleship and simply rest in the Lord. Sunday Mass provides many opportunities for quiet times, particularly during the periods of silence following the readings. Why not take the time today to allow the saving word of the Lord to penetrate your heart during those silent times? Ask the Lord to renew you in body, mind, and spirit for the arduous work of discipleship. Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 ST. MARY MAGDALENE On the 22nd we celebrate the feast day of St. Mary from Magdala who has endured a bad rap over the years. Thanks to a misguided sermon by Pope Gregory I in the 6th century and the DaVinci code in our own day, which claims she was married to Jesus, it seems Mary is always defined in relationship to men and not as the great female leader she was in her own right in the early church. It is sad for me to see that the contribution of almost every woman in Jesus circle, except for his mother, was forgotten, ignored or suppressed. It is now time to restore the reputation of Mary of Magdala to her rightful place in church history. A few years ago I visited the excavation site on the shores of Lake Galilee where the guide told us that Mary was the main business lady in the village. It was to Magdala that the Apostles brought their fish to be cured to avoid the taxes imposed by the Herod boys! Mary enjoyed an exalted standing in the early church. She was, not only the first person to whom Jesus appeared after the Resurrection, but also the one who proclaimed the Easter Good News to the disciples which include the official early church leaders Peter, James, Andrew and the rest. Thus she earned her traditional title Apostle to the Apostles. For us women she is a vivid model of discipleship. Today women are exercising more and more leadership roles in the Church. Taking this parish for example we have Mira at school, Judy as Religious Education Director, Jean as Music Director, Jo Anne in our finance office, Jaime Anderson as Director of Preschool and Debi and Barbara as the very face of our Church our Secretaries. For men too, Mary shows that following Christ transcends everything including the worlds expectations and concern for your good name! Mary of Magdala shows us that nothing should get in the way of our relationship with Jesus. St. Mary Magdalene, friend of Jesus and Apostle to the Apostles, pray for us. +++++++++++++++++++++++ DREAMS and VISIONS (Pastoral Planning for Lifelong Faith Formation) Movement from Good to Great! Did you ever know someone with dreams and visions for the Church? There are many people who have them, and I ll bet you re one! If so, you can take your place alongside women and men of all kinds whose dreams and visions have been shaping the Church for centuries. Pope John XXIII had dreams and visions for the Church. They were taken up and given lofty expression at the Second Vatican Council. His dreams led others to dream with him, and after him, both Popes Paul VI and John Paul II had visions as well. The People of God have dreams and visions, too. Good or Great? In the introductions to his powerful book, Good to Great, (New York:HarperCollins,2001) Jim Collins wrote, Good is the enemy of great. And that is one of the key reasons why we have so little that becomes great. He is so correct! For Catholic parishes, this is a powerful wake up call. The Church is filled with good parishes:the liturgies are planned. The education programs use a nice looking book. Some of the people take an active role in parish leadership and ministry. The collections pay the bills, for the most part. People can get their children baptized without too much hassle. It s a good parish. Can we really afford to dwell forever in the doldrums of being only good? The world needs the message we bring! We have, after all, the secret of the Reign of God, and we need to be more than merely good to announce that. We need to move toward becoming great! Sr. Anita More next week
