Parent Newsletter Our Lady of Mount Carmel School Community! Faith! Academics September 20, 2017 Dear Parents, The auction was a success! I have received so much positive feedback about the event. However, the accolades really go to our chairs Jen Caesar, Michelle Damiani, and Megan Hubbs! Unless you have chaired this event, it is difficult to understand how much work goes into it. I appreciate the extra time they put in to make the Auction great. Be sure to thank them and congratulate them on a job well done when you see them! Thank you to all of their subcommittee chairs who shared time and many talents. Once again, I thank each of you who took on tasks big and small. It takes all of us working together to create a successful event! Today our 6 th graders led us in a beautiful mass celebrating the feast of the Korean martyrs Sts. Andrew Kim Tae-gon, Paul Chong Ha-sang and companions. The students researched the martyrs and the birth of Christianity in Korea. Before Christianity was tolerated in Korea, it is estimated that as many as 10,000 people (mostly lay) were put to death for their faith including the 103 we honor today. Christianity arrived in Korea in the late 1500s. The faith grew and in the late 1700s a missionary priest visited the country to discover more than 4,000 Christians who had never received the Sacraments nor ever seen a priest. What an amazing testament of their faith that even without the things we might take for granted, mass, the Eucharist, a priest, they remained faithful to Christ for nearly 200 years! During mass one of the third graders said to me This is a sad story. However, I reminded him that it is actually a beautiful and powerful story that these Christians made the ultimate sacrifice for their faith!
