Development Dialogue August 13, 2017 Don't give away your hard earned estate through unnecessary taxes and other administration costs by not having your estate plans in order. While visiting with your attorney and/or other personal advisors make sure your estate plans are in order. This will insure that your assets will be distributed according to your wishes and not the state of Nebraska. Please prayerfully consider remembering our School and/or Parish's Endowment Funds in your will or estate planning. Please contact Bob Nowaczyk, SPSL's Development Coordinator at 402-551-6667 for more information. Laity in Liturgy August 13 Rise up! Come! The Lord is passing by! In signs and wonders the ancient Israelites and Prophets as well as the Apostles had the benefit of a miracle or two on their faith journey. The modern world would have us believe that we live beyond the shadow of doubt as we pursue Christ. No seas are parting, no men are walking on the water, Angels aren t preeminently speaking to us and the dead (as far as our human senses would indicate) are not rising. However, what the modern world doesn t see, that which we are called to be aware of, are the miracles and mysteries behind the veil. This takes courage. As Father Craig said in his Homily last week, It s good to be good, but we are here to reach beyond ourselves and strive for an Eternity with God in Heaven. Be brave and bold in your remembrances of the miracles at every Mass, and which happen all over the world in secret every day. Christ calls to us from the Eucharist in every bit as tremendous, terrifying and beautiful a way as he called to St. Peter on the water or Elijah on the mount. Drew Neneman Entrance Antiphon Look to your covenant, O Lord, and forget not the life of your poor ones for ever. Arise, O God, and defend your cause, and forget not the cries of those who seek you. Cf. Ps 74 (73): 20, 19, 22, 23 Communion Antiphon O Jerusalem, glorify the Lord, who gives you your fill of finest wheat. Ps 147: 12, 14 06 l St. Leo Catholic Church

St. Leo Parish Health Ministry August is National Breastfeeding Month. Breastfeeding is beneficial for both babies & moms. The Nebraska Department of Health & Human Services has identified the following benefits for breast feeding your baby: Breastmilk protects your baby s immune system & fights diseases, keeping your baby healthy. Some research has shown that it can reduce the risk of diabetes, childhood leukemia, obesity & even sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). It also provides protection from illnesses like ear & respiratory infections, stomach viruses, asthma & diarrhea. Breastmilk is also easier to digest. It changes as your baby grows. Colostrum (the first milk) is rich in nutrients & antibodies to protect your baby. It changes to mature milk within 3-5 days. This mature milk has the perfect amount of fat, sugar, water, & protein for your baby to grow. Benefits for moms may include a decreased risk of diabetes, breast cancer & postpartum depression. Some studies have also indicated an association with weight loss. Mom & baby experience a physical/emotional intimacy & bonding associated with breastfeeding & the release of hormones. There s also a potential financial benefit associated with breastfeeding (up to $1,500.00 per year). This estimate was based on the breastmilk keeping the baby healthy, resulting in lower health care costs & few missed days from work & not on formula expenditures. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that breastfeeding continue for at least 12 months, & thereafter for as long as mother and baby desire. A helpful online manual addressing how to breastfeed is Your Guide to Breastfeeding. It can be accessed via the last website listed under Resources. In Pursuit of Life, Love and Happiness By: Deacon Jim Shipman Ever been caught in a violent thunderstorm? It is one of those times we pray to the Lord to help us get out of this situation. It seems like every time we need help, we cry out, "Lord, save me!" We need to rely on Him in the storms of life. If we really listen, we hear Jesus say, Take courage, I am here; do not be afraid." Our scriptures today speak about recognizing when we are in God s presence and learning to listen to His Spirit. They also speak to us about how we often allow the circumstances and storms in our lives to overwhelm our faith and trust in our Lord. Elijah, in our first reading, is called out by God to wait for him to pass by him. God was not in the wind, earthquake, or fire, but God was present in a whisper. Elijah recognized His presence and hid his face. If we are in tune with our Lord, our human nature and our conscience, know when God is present. When I feel God s presence I burst into tears, because His love just overwhelms me. Everyone has a different reaction, but you will learn to know when God is present in your life. In our Gospel, the disciples are struggling against the storm and Jesus comes to them walking on the water. Frighten by this site, Jesus calms them by saying Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid. Peter, in faith, steps out of the boat to walk to Jesus, but the storm around him makes him take his eye off the Lord, and his moment of faith and trust fails. Jesus said, Oh, you of little faith, why did you doubt? In our storms of life, we must keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. He calls us to listen, be courageous and know that He is here with us.
