A NOTE FROM FATHER Dear Parishioners, Lately in my personal prayer, I have been stuck on the invitation, Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father. There is so much to reflect on, first that the Eucharist is a sacrifice, but also that the sacrifice is different for me as a priest from the rest of the congregation, hence my is separate from 'yours'. When a priest offers Mass, it is for all those gathered, offering to the Father the one eternal sacrifice of Christ. He might offer it for a specific intention, such as for the repose of a specific person, another person s stated intention, or for the whole parish (pastors are to offer Missa pro populo - for the people - every Sunday and Holy Day of Obligation). But that is not the only sacrifice at Mass - there is also the sacrifice of the congregation, those who attend who are full participating with their own intentions. They make a sacrifice of their lives, symbolized by the offering of the bread and wine (and the collection, if there is one). It is not a passive activity, but one of being receptive. If you want to get more out of Mass, I encourage you to do just that. As St. Augustine exhorted, see yourself in the offering. Have your particular intention in mind before coming, and as the priest invites you to pray, offer it with you heart and mind. Somewhat related to this, I remind you again of the great custom of asking Mass to be offered for a specific intention, especially for the deceased. In addition to the Funeral Mass, offering Masses for the deceased can aid the souls in purgatory to come to the full love of Christ and prepare to enter into heavenly glory. But Mass intentions can be for anything within reason - the conversion of a sinner, the return of a prodigal child, healing, in thanksgiving for something, or an anniversary. An intention might even be for several deceased family members, for example. On my part, before I offer the Mass, I review the intentions as published in the bulletin. The priest offering the intention should have that particular intention in mind, and the laity may keep that intention in their prayers as well. To clarify, it is not necessary to vocally announce the intention, though it is good practice to do so whether at the start of Mass or during the petitions. Note, too, that the priest may have other personal intentions but can only accept one stipend (the donation that goes to the one who offers Mass for that intention). This is because the Mass is the source of unlimited grace and is not limited to the one intention. If you have some intentions for Masses, please contact Sarah in the parish office. The suggested offering is $10 (though any amount is accepted). For those curious, this stipend goes to the priest who offers the Mass and is reported as income. In Christ, Fr. AREA NEWS Catholic Home Missions Appeal Next week, we will take up the Catholic Home Missions Appeal. Right now, over 40 percent of dioceses in the US are considered home missions because they are unable to fund essential pastoral work needed in their communities. Your support of this appeal helps ease the struggle of these dioceses. Please prayerfully consider how you can support this appeal. More information can be found at www.usccb.org/home-missions. Listening for the Still, Small Voice of God In 1Kings 19:11-12, Elijah hears God s voice not in the strong wind, the earthquake or the fire, but rather in a quiet whisper. In the midst of our busy lives and the many voices around us clamoring to be heard, it can be difficult to hear God s still, small voice within us. Join with women 18-45 yrs. seeking to listen to how God is calling them in their lives at this time. Learn ways to recognize God s voice and God s leading as you consider both small and big decisions. Beginning Nov. 13 th, the group will meet the 2nd Monday of each month from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Church in Mankato in the Library Room (enter door 7).
