Theology of the Body (Column 11) In the Divine image He created them male and female. How is male and female in the image of God? God as pure spirit is neither male nor female. God does not have a sex. Sex (male and female) belongs to the realm of physical creation, not spirit, or even created spirit. The key is the phrase, the two will become one flesh. God, as you recall, is a unity of persons, but one God. Adam and Eve are a unity of persons, but become one flesh. Some immediate questions may come to mind: God is a unity of three persons, not two like Adam and Eve. Animals have a sex also, are they in the image of God? What makes the one flesh union between Adam and Eve anything different than the animals? To answer these questions we need to take a closer look at Genesis, chapters 1&2 In Genesis there are two account of creation. The first account is in chapter one and the second is in chapter two. The first account presents a theology of God as transcendent from His creation. God has dominion over all things since He is the Creator. However, we see in chapter one when God said, Let us make man in our image after our likeness, it is followed by, and let them have dominion over all the earth be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over every living thing. This certainly is one of the ways man is in the image of God, separate from all the animals of the earth; man was given a share in God s authority; creation was entrusted to the care of man. It can be argued that the creation of man in the image and likeness of God constitutes man s relationship with the rest of creation. However, sharing in God s authority does not adequately address the image of God. It may address how man is like God, but in His image? The second account of creation takes a closer look at the creation of man, giving us some further details. Before we go any further, a little side note: When I use the term man I am not limiting it to male, but male and female. The term adam is a generic term referencing mankind in general, it is neither masculine nor feminine, it is neuter. It comes from the term adamah meaning reddish clay. The second account of creation gives us the text, then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. The term adam does take a masculine sense later with the creation of woman, but we will return to that later. For now, I want to focus on the fact that God breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. The word used for breath is the same word used for spirit : when the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters. The Spirit of God we know is the very Love/Life of God in the Most Holy Trinity. We know this from Christian Revelation. The Holy Spirit is the Life/love of God. In this act God is giving man a share in His divine life. This separates man from the animals. This Breath of God is God Himself uniting man with Himself. The body of adam formed from the clay of the earth on the sixth day, just as the beasts were, is consecrated, set apart from all of earthly creation, as holy. Man is constituted as body-soul. Man is not a soul in a body. Man is not a body with a soul, as if body is primary and soul is added on. Man is a human body, man is equally body and soul constituting a person. The body reveals God. God is not visible to the human senses. God s presence through the gift of His spirit is only visible through the body. The body makes present, or reveals God. While the image of God is present in the body of man, the image is lacking. How so? God is a Divine Spirit, but God is also a communion of Persons. Man alone (adam) does not reveal this mystery/image of God. The second account of creation addresses this aloneness of adam. Whereas the first account of creation emphasizes more the transcendence of God, the second account gives insight into the immanence of God. This is not the immanence of the Incarnation, but it shows God to be very close to and involved in the life of adam (man): God talks and walks with adam in the garden. But if God is close to adam and talks and walks with adam in the garden, how is adam alone? In Jesus and Mary,

The IRCP ran for nearly 13 months, and more than 200 individuals applied to participate in the program. The Dioceses of Brooklyn and Rockville Centre have undertaken their own IRCP programs. The archdiocese has prepared a report on the results of the IRCP, and posted it this morning on the archdiocesan website in both English and Spanish. I hope that you will take a few moments to read the report, and that you will encourage others to do so as well. There is also a story about it in today s edition of Catholic New York. The report also provides a summary of the Church s efforts to combat the scourge of sexual abuse of minors, which have resulted in the Church being a leader in the prevention of abuse, and in the care for victim survivors. At a time when nearly every institution that involves minors has had to face allegations of abuse, the Church can be a model in how to respond to this horror. By any measure, our reconciliation program has been a success. Many of the victim-survivors have expressed their gratitude that the Church extended an invitation, listened, and responded with compassion and understanding. All left knowing that the Archdiocese of New York was willing to make a genuine act of reparation for the harm that was done to them. Thank you for your interest in and support of this pastoral initiative of the archdiocese. Please keep in your prayers all victim-survivors of sexual abuse, as well as all those whose lives have been touched by it. A blessed Advent. Sincerely, Joseph Zwilling Director of Communications
