Grand Knight s Message Brother Knights, When you read this newsletter, we will have completed our annual March for Life. I want to thank everyone that participated, especially Ed Sauley, that have dedicated so many years to this worth cause. Your efforts do not go unnoticed. Our Catholic faith and belief is under attack from all sides. We must stand firm, TOGETHER!!! On this subject, the 40 Days for Life of the unborn will kick off February 12 th. Then our biannual vigil at Planned Parenthood will begin the day after, Ash Wednesday. We, as Knights, are responsible for 6 Wednesdays in a row during Advent. Please help fill positions so others do not have to stand for hours at a time. Contact Tom Hruska. I want to thank Darren Johnson for arranging our first Free Throw contest that we have begun to sponsor once again. Darren made it happen with help from the Squires. If you go back far enough in our records, we have held a contest in the past, but it was a long time ago. Thank you, Darren!!! We have three new members that joined at our Regional meeting on January 12 th. They are Fernando T. Griego, his son Fernando Griego, and Armando Ravelo. Please welcome our newest Brother Knights when you see them. This begins the writing season for you poor Grand Knight, WAAAHHH!!!Pray that I will have the stamina to fulfill this obligation and correctly. Last year, it paid off in many ways, one being the recognition of our council Statewide. You are the reason our council received the highest honor in Star Council and the State Deputy s Council of the Year. This helps in so many ways. As of this writing, our Council is the largest in the State. Way to go guys and girls!!! May we all stand vigilant and fight against the greatest slaughter of all time with 52+ million creations of God not being allowed to walk on this earth. Man defying God can only mean, God defying man. Mankind has been given many warnings not to defy him, yet it continues from the top of the food chain to the bottom. Some things in life seem so evident and/or make common sense. I have to pinch myself that this is real and happening. There are a great number of those that do not believe in life or the definition of marriage. It just doesn t seem possible. Some do not believe in capital punishment, for instance, yet stand by while the most innocent, speechless, are not allowed to be born. God Bless you all, and stand firm. FAMILY OF THE MONTH DARREN & JOANN JOHNSON Council 1643, Knights of Columbus is pleased to announce the Family of the Month as Brother Darren Johnson and Joann Johnson family. Darren has been a member of the council for a short time, but his attitude is that, if it worthwhile, he should embrace it whole heartedly as a member. This he has done! In this Fraternal Year Darren was elected Deputy Grand Knight. He also assumes the mantles of Chair of the Program Committee and also Family Director, both positions being right at the heart of the Council s activities. Brother Knights worked with Darren on the Knights Before Christmas tree giveaway program this year where they were able to double the commitment this year from 12 trees to 25. Darren and his wife Joann are a significant presence at St. Michael Parish where they both serve as members of the Hospitality Ministry. Joann is a master baker and is very active serving with the Knights in the kitchen at both St. Michael and Sacred Heart at lunch and dinner events. Be on the lookout for Joann s Cake/Cupcake Store she hopes to have her own store someday. We have all enjoyed the special treats that she has made for many of our events. Darren and Joann have two daughters. Whitney is married and is 19 years old. Mackenzie is 16 years old this month and attends River Ridge High School. Darren never seems to stop organizing and taking on the leadership for council events. He just completed organizing and managing a very successful Free Throw Contest at St. Michael and is now, as the committee chair, turning his focus of our St. Patrick s Day Dinner event scheduled for March 16 th at Hallen Hall. Darren is a classic car enthusiast, owns his own consulting business, and has worked with the City of Lacey and the Fire Department to resolve community issues. For all that they do, Darren and Joann are truly worthy of the honor bestowed upon them as our council s family of the month. Congratulations and God bless you, Darren and Joann. Page -10-
